What the future may look like for economistsTorbjörn BeckerDirector of the Stockholm Institute of Transition Economics at the Stockholm School of Economics and board member of the Kyiv School of [email protected]
A few economist(?) jobs I have held• Doing research as a PhD candidate on fiscal policy, public debt
management and macro in general
• Government policy on Public Debt Management
• International Monetary Fund (IMF), macro, international economics, financial markets,…
• Director of SITE (policy oriented research institute), managing an organization
• Board of KSE, support and governance to KSE management
• Board of Sida, support and oversight on behalf of Swedish government
• What’s next?
The “macro” environment that we are part of
What will economist do in the futureNo job or career part will be unaffected by technological progress, but only part of (most) jobs can be done by computers and robots for a long time to come
• Economists will be needed also in the future but the value of different skills will change
• Computing, solving complicated equations and models, gather data are things that machines can potentially do more efficiently
• Interpreting data, creating models based on new thinking, understanding which model makes sense in a particular environment, communicating results in a clear way will be still be very valuable!
Some words of advice to be competitive in the global market
Do something you enjoy doing, work life is long and not getting shorter anytime soon (pension systems will fail otherwise)
• Invest in your ability to do independent thinking and analysis, this is the last thing we will be able to automate
• Continue learning new skills
• Learn good English
• Work on your presentation skills
• Be curious and dare to follow your instincts, I’m an old school economist and most likely wrong about what you should do

In theory there is no difference between theory and practice. In practice there is
You can’t just ask customers what they want and then try to give that to them. By the
time you get it built, they’ll want something new
The great thing about taking big chances when you’re younger is you have less to lose and you
don’t know as much. So you take big swings
