The Ensemble Theatre was founded in 1976 by the late George

Hawkins to preserve African-American artistic expression and enlighten,

entertain, and enrich a diverse community. Thirty years later, the theatre

has evolved from a touring company operating from the trunk of

Mr. Hawkins’ car to become one of Houston’s finest historical cultural

institutions. The Ensemble is the only professional theatre in the region

dedicated to the production of works portraying the African-American

experience, the oldest and largest professional African-American theatre

in the Southwest, and holds the distinction of being one of the nation’s largest African-American

theatres owning and operating its own facility and producing in-house. The Ensemble Theatre

has fulfilled and surpassed the vision of its founder, and continues to expand and create innovative

programs to bring African-American theatre to a myriad of audiences.

The programs and operations of The Ensemble Theatre benefit a multi-cultural audience that

is diverse in age, income, ethnicity, and culture. Its core audience is African-American (70%).

The Ensemble produces a Mainstage Season of six contemporary and classic works devoted to the

portrayal of the African-American experience by local and national playwrights and artists. The

Ensemble’s Performing Arts Education program provides educational workshops, artist-in-residence

experiences, and live performances for students both off-site and at the Theatre, and the Young

Performers Program offers intensive summer training for children ages 7 to 17 encompassing

instruction in all disciplines of the theatre arts. Through its varied programs, The Ensemble

projects to benefit an audience and artistic constituency that may potentially exceed 150,000

people annually.

About the Playwrights and ComposerJaye Willard Stewart 1949–1996 (Playwright) Jaye lived and breathed art his entire life, expressing his emotions and political views through many venues in the arts arena from Washington, DC to New York to Chicago and many points in between. Jaye was an accomplished painter, drummer, guitarist, actor, director, set/lights/sound designer, arts administrator and writer. Closest to his heart was the written word. His expression of the joy he found in the written word extended to acting, directing and writing (all of which he shared with eta Creative Arts Foundation during his 10-year history in Chicago. In addition to eta, Jaye’s work was viewed at the Goodman Theater, Kuumba Theater, Chicago Theater Company, and Victory Gardens Theater, to name a few. He had very strong spiritual and creative ties at eta. When Get Ready was performed under his direc-tion at eta, Jaye was ecstatic. As it was well received by eta audiences, Jay was at least emotionally fulfilled with respect to this play. When Jaye and Joe Plummer came together over this project, Jaye’s focus was on creating a play in which (in his words) “the Black man wins, just for doing the right thing.” It was important to him to show the Black man’s innate sense of camaraderie and determination to realize an honorable outcome in the face of overwhelming obstacles.

Debi Stewart (Widow of Jaye W. Stewart and co-author of Get Ready) is an actress, director and writer who actively participated as an artist in Chicago Theater and theatre across the country for over 20 years. For Debi, Get Ready, is a labor of love that does not stop at the written word. She is honored that her husband and Joe allowed her to share in the process of creating this play.

Joe Plummer (Playwright/Composer) is clearly one of Chicago’s most versatile artists and has enjoyed tremendous success as an actor, singer, playwright, composer/lyricist, choreographer, and sound designer. Joe is currently touring with the production, The Bingo Extravaganza. His past credits include a Jeff and BTAA nomination for his por-trayal of Louis Armstrong in the Apple Tree production of Jamming with Pops. He was nominated for two Jeffs and one BTAA award for Best Writing and Choreographer for Get Ready, originally produced at Victory Gardens. He is a board member of Live Bait Theatre company and artistic associate at Chicago Dramatist. He also produces various cable programs for Can-TV and tours his own children’s program called African Village Folktales.

Artistic Director NotesWhat a wonderful way to open The Ensemble Theatre’s 30th anniversary sea-son by celebrating with the delightful, soul-stirring play, Get Ready, written in collaboration with Jaye & Debi Stewart and Joe Plummer. I was first intro-duced to Get Ready by my Chicago girlfriend, Marcella Dillard, who brought the show to my attention in the early 1990s. Music is such an integral part of our lives that I am sure our audiences will be delighted by this entertaining theatrical experience. The Doves are a group that originally performed in the 1960s and are destined to make a comeback as the play takes place in the 1980s.

As the character, Knobby says, “there was a time when I’d take and show you a thing or two about show business … back when entertainers was dressed to the nines, they was neat and clean, sophis-ticated, had some class about ‘em!” This statement describes the pride, the loyalty, the spirit and a sound so distinctive that its artists transcended every musical possibility. In Get Ready, each artist remains true to the seamless and sincere vocal approach that uniquely defines their artistry. The harmonic, smooth sounds of these singers engages each audience member, inviting them to release all inhibition and travel down memory lane, “when music was music, and where one can be given another chance to step into the light.” Enjoy.

In Art’s Way,

Eileen J. MorrisArtistic Director

About the ChoreographerAisha “Moyo” Ussery is a devoted Christian who has completely committed her life to Christ. Turning away from sin, God has allowed Aisha to walk through various doors of prosperity. She is an educator of dance, theatre, music, the Word of God and other scholastic disciplines at Alexander Hamilton Middle School, The Ensemble Theatre, Galilee Missionary Baptist Church, and Harvest Time Church in Houston, Texas. Aisha is overjoyed that God entrusted her with various talents and is elated that God chooses to use her to uplift young people through the arts, emphasizing God’s unchanging word of righteousness and purity. God chose to do a “quick work” on Aisha in 2004, removing people, places, and things that would stifle the new life He had and has in store for her.

Aisha’s professional work in theatre is extensive. She has performed and/or choreographed Once on this Island, One Mo’ Time, Little Shop of Horrors, Ain’t Misbehavin’ (Houston and Icelandic Tour), Crowns, Two Trains Running, Sparkle, Five Guys Named Mo, and many others. She danced and played B Angie B in Vh1’s 2 Legit: The MC Hammer Story. In addition, Aisha has sang with/for Jonathan Butler, Ronnie Laws and family, Malik Yoba, Sean Levert, Howard Hewitt, Michelle Williams and Kelly Rowlands of Destiny’s Child, H-Town, and others.

Directors’ NotesGet Ready presents for your enjoyment and understanding, a very personal glimpse into the lives of doo-wop and soul groups that emerged in this country in the late 1950s and underscored the social, civil and human rights movements of the 1960s and 1970s. The characters’ bad affairs, bad whiskey, determination, and good music serve to make familiar and clear both the challenges and triumphs of being a black person and a black artist in America before and during the Civil Rights Movement. In Get Ready, the fictional singing group, The Doves,’ initial attempt at success was cut short by the socio-political climate of the day, greed, and their own personal circumstances. The play allows us to see them struggle through those issues, grow and finally reclaim their dream. Get Ready is an enjoyable performance piece that allows patrons to sing, laugh and painlessly experience a real slice of African-American art and history.

Enjoy,Clarence & Shirley Whitmore
