This Get Started guide is designed to help you set up and use your new Sprint Optik 2 tablet. It’s divided into four sections to help you find the information you need quickly and easily.

Using This Guide

Get Ready − page 6 − Find out what you need to do before you use your tablet the first time, including activating Sprint service on your tablet.

Android Basics − page 8 − Learn some basics about your tablet, use the home screen, and enter text. If you’re familiar with Android devices, you can probably skip these pages (although a refresher course never hurt anyone).

Get Your Device Ready

Charge the Battery1. Insert the micro USB end of the connection

cord into the charger jack on the bottom of your device.

2. Insert the standard USB end of the cord into the AC adapter.

3. Plug the AC adapter into an electrical outlet and charge for at least three hours.

Turn the Device On ► Press and hold the power button on the top right side of the device to turn the device on.• If your device is activated, it will turn on,

search for Sprint service, and begin the setup application.

• If your device is not yet activated, see “Activate Your Device” on page 7 for more information.

Turn the Device Off ► Press and hold the power button on the top right side of the device. Touch Power off and then touch OK to turn the device off.

Unlock the Screen ► Using your finger, swipe the lock icon on the screen over to the unlock icon.

Turn the Screen On and Off• To quickly turn the display screen off,

press the power button.

• To turn the screen on and display the unlock screen, press the power button.

Activate Your DeviceActivate Your Device

If you purchased your tablet at a Sprint Store, it is probably activated and ready to use.

If you received your tablet in the mail, and it is a new Sprint account or a new device on an existing account, your device is designed to activate automatically when you first turn it on. You will see a Hands Free Activation screen at startup, and your device will check for updates after activating. When it’s finished, touch OK to continue. Your device will reboot and you will see the Welcome screen.

If you received your tablet in the mail and it is going to be activated on an existing number (you’re swapping devices), go to sprint.com/activate and follow the instructions.

If your tablet is still not activated, visit sprint.com/support for assistance. If you do not have access to the Internet, call Sprint Customer Service at 1-888-211-4727 from another phone.

Your Home ScreenExtended Home ScreensThere are a total of three home screens available, one on either side of the main Home screen.

• To view additional screens, swipe your finger left or right across the screen.

• To return to the main Home screen, touch Home .

The Status BarThe status bar at the upper right corner of the home screen provides device and service status information and alerts.

• To view alerts and status, swipe the status bar downwards with your finger.

• To access quick settings, touch the Quick Settings icon ( ) while the status bar is open.

Customize the Home ScreensYou can customize your home screens by adding widgets, application shortcuts, wallpapers, and more.

To add a widget or app shortcut:1. Touch > Apps .2. Touch either APPS or WIDGETS.3. To place an item on a home screen,

touch and hold it and then drag it to the home screen.

To change the wallpaper:1. Touch and hold an empty area on the

home screen.2. Select a location, and then select a picture.

Buttons and Keys Open AppsButtons and KeysThe bottom front of your device contains a Home key, Back key, and Recent Apps key. The right front of your device contains a row of program icons that are available from every Home screen.

Open Apps• If an app is on one of your Home screens,

just tap it to open it.• If an app is not available from your Home

screen, touch , tap Apps , and then tap the app icon. You may have to scroll right or left to find your app.

KeyboardsYour device gives you options for how you enter text with the onscreen keyboards: Android keyboard, TouchPal keyboard, or Swype™.

► To display a keyboard to enter text, touch any text field.

Keyboard Options ► To access keyboard options, including switching between entry methods, swipe open the status bar and touch Choose input method, then touch an option.• Android (US) Keyboard displays the

Android keyboard.• Google voice typing lets you enter text

by speaking.

• Swype displays the Swype keyboard. Swype lets you enter words by sliding your fingers through letters without lifting your finger.

• TouchPal Keyboard also let you to enter words by sliding your fingers through letters.

► To configure text entry options for an entry method, swipe open the status bar and touch Choose input method > Set up input methods and then touch Quick settings next to the entry method.• Settings available vary by input method

and may include language (English or Español), audio or touch feedback (sound or vibration), auto-capitalization options, and auto-correct and user dictionary options.

Use Your Tablet: PeopleYour tablet’s People application lets you access and manage contacts from a variety of sources, including Gmail, Exchange, Facebook, Twitter, contacts synced from your computer, and contacts you’ve entered by hand.

View People1. Touch > Apps > People .2. Scroll through the list to view your contacts.

• To move quickly through the list, drag the slider on the left side of the list. You’ll see a letter that indicates where you are in the alphabetical list.

• To search for a contact, touch and begin entering a name.

Add a New Contact1. Touch > Apps > People > .2. Add as much or as little information as

you want.

• To add information in a field, touch the field to display the touchscreen keyboard.

• To assign a number or address type (such as Home, Mobile, Work, etc.), touch the label next to the number or address field.

• To assign a picture, touch the icon next to the name and select a picture.

3. Touch Done when you’re finished.

Note: If you have contacts associated with your Gmail account, they are automatically synced with your device.

PeopleEdit Contacts1. Touch > Apps > People .2. Touch a contact to open it, and then touch

Edit .• Touch a field to add or edit information.

3. Touch Done when you’re finished.

Note: To delete a contact, touch > Delete.

Sync ContactsWhen you change one of your contacts on your device, your device automatically updates your other social networking accounts. Also, your device updates your Contacts and social networking accounts whenever you change a friend in your social networking accounts.

EmailAccess Email Messages1. Touch > Apps > Email or Gmail .

• If necessary, touch the email account you want to use.

2. From the inbox, touch the message you want to view.

Tip: To quickly review your email or Gmail messages, you can add a widget to one of the home screens. Touch > Apps > WIDGETS and scroll to the desired widget. Touch and hold it and drag it to an available location on the home screen.

Send an Email Message1. Touch > Apps > Email or Gmail .

• If necessary, touch the email account you want to use.

2. Touch Compose .3. Enter an email address or contact name.4. Enter a subject and a message.

• To add attachments, touch Attach , and choose an attachment.

Set Up an Email Account1. Touch > Apps > Settings .2. Under ACCOUNTS, touch Add account >

Email .3. Follow the instructions to sign in to your

email account.• If you’re adding an account from a

common email provider, such as Windows Live Hotmail or Yahoo Mail, enter your email address and password and touch Next. Your email should be set up automatically.

• If you’re adding an account from a less common provider, or if you have additional settings to configure, touch Manual setup. Follow the instructions to provide the required information.

Set Up a Microsoft® Exchange® AccountUse the Corporate option to set up Exchange server work email accounts. Contact your IT administrator for account sign-in requirements.

1. Touch > Apps > Settings .2. Under ACCOUNTS, touch Add account >

Corporate.3. Enter the Exchange server account details

and then touch Next.• Contact your Exchange Server administrator

for required sign-in information.4. Select the type of information you want to

synchronize and touch Finish setup.

Tip: You can also add accounts through the Email menu: Touch > Apps > Email >

> Settings > ADD ACCOUNT.

Camera & CamcorderTake a Picture1. Touch > Apps > Camera .2. Aim the lens at your subject and then

touch and release to take the picture. • Drag the slider at the top of the screen to

zoom in and out.• Touch to switch between the front

and back lens.

Record a Video1. Touch > Apps > Camera .2. Drag the slider in the lower left corner to

the camcorder icon to switch to camcorder mode.

3. Frame your subject in the screen and touch to begin recording. Touch to stop.

• Touch to switch between the front and back lens.

View Pictures and Videos1. Touch > Apps > Gallery .2. Touch a folder to display pictures or videos.

• Touch a picture or video to display it full size.• For video playback, use the onscreen

controls to play, pause, or stop the video.

Share Pictures and Videos1. Touch > Apps > Gallery .2. Touch an album to display the thumbnails.3. Touch a thumbnail to open it and then

touch the share icon ( ).4. Choose a share method, such as Picasa,

Bluetooth, Facebook, Twitter, Gmail, or Email.5. Follow the prompts to compose your

message or caption and send the picture or video.

WebGo Online1. Touch > Apps > Browser.2. Touch the menu bar to enter a Web page

address or touch Bookmarks and touch a bookmark. • For more options, touch from any

page. Options may include Save to Bookmarks, Windows, Share page, Find on page, Save for offline reading, Downloads, Page info, and Settings.

• To scroll, slide your finger up or down the page.

• To zoom in or out, pinch the screen.

Connect to a Wi-Fi NetworkWhen you’re in range of an available Wi-Fi network, use your tablet’s Wi-Fi feature to access the Internet and other data services.

1. Touch > Apps > Settings .2. Under WIRELESS & NETWORKS, touch the

Wi-Fi slider to turn Wi-Fi on. 3. Touch Wi-Fi to display a list of available

networks.4. Touch a Wi-Fi network to connect. If

necessary, enter the security key and tap Connect.• When you’re connected to a Wi-Fi

network, you’ll see the Wi-Fi icon ( ) in the status bar.

Note: When you’re not using Wi-Fi, turn it off to extend battery life.

Google Play and Google Mobile ServicesGoogle Play™ is the place to go to find new apps, games, movies, and more for your tablet.Download Apps and Games1. Touch and tap Apps > Play Store .2. Browse through featured apps and games,

or tap at the top of the app to start a search.

3. Tap an item to read a description and reviews.

4. Tap INSTALL (for free apps) or the price (for paid applications) and follow the onscreen prompts.

Note: You must have a Google Account set up on your tablet to purchase and download applications from Google Play.

Google Mobile Services• Gmail – The Google mail service. Your Gmail

account lets you access many Google-related services as well as the Google Play.

• Google+ Hangouts – Google’s instant messaging service. Touch and tap Apps

> Hangouts to begin using the service.• Google Maps – The Google location

program. Touch and tap Apps > Maps to begin using the service.

• YouTube – View and share videos. Touch and tap Apps > YouTube to browse through and view available videos. Sign in with your Google Account to upload your own videos.

Sprint As You Go customers: You will need to provide credit card information to purchase and download items from Google Play.

BluetoothPair and Connect With a Bluetooth® Device1. Touch > Apps > Settings >

Bluetooth.

• If Bluetooth is not turned on, touch the Bluetooth slider to turn it on.

2. Touch SEARCH FOR DEVICES to scan for available Bluetooth devices.

3. Select an available device and follow the prompts to pair the devices. You may be required to enter a passcode (often 0000) to complete pairing.

4. Once you’re paired, your connection should launch.

Share Contacts, Files, or Pictures Using BluetoothOpen the application containing the file

you want to share (for example, touch > Apps > Gallery ).

5. Locate the file you want to share.• You can send pictures and videos directly

from the Gallery. You can also send Contacts, voice recordings, and other file types. Not all devices will be able to receive all file types.

6. Depending on the application, touch > Bluetooth or touch > Share > Bluetooth.

7. Touch the name of the device to which you’re sending the file. (If prompted, touch Turn on to turn Bluetooth on.)

Social Networking: Facebook, Twitter & MoreSet up and access all your favorite social networking apps on the go.

Set Up Social Networking AccountsBefore using your social networking accounts, you may need to download them from the Google Play Store app.

1. Touch > Apps > Play Store .2. Browse or search for the app you want to

download, for example Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram.

3. Touch the app and then touch INSTALL. Follow the prompts to download and install the app.

Access Your Accounts1. Touch > Apps > Facebook or Twitter.2. Enter your required sign-in information.3. Send status updates, share pictures, read

updates, and more.

Put Your Social Networking Accounts on Your Home ScreenMake accessing your Facebook page and Twitter feeds even easier by placing a widget on one of your home screens.

1. Touch > Apps > WIDGETS.2. Touch and hold a widget and then drag it

to the home screen.

Open Your Music Player1. Touch > Apps > Music .2. Select an option to display your music:

Albums, Artists, Songs, Playlists, Folders, or GenreList.

3. Touch a song to begin playing. Use the onscreen controls to pause, play, fast-forward, or rewind your music.

Getting MusicBefore you can listen to your music, you need to load songs into your device. Here’s one way to do it:

1. Use the supplied USB cable to connect your device to an available USB port on your computer. The device drivers will automatically be installed on your computer.

2. On your computer, under My Computer, double-click on the Portable Media Player icon ( ).

3. Copy music files from your computer to the music folder, and then disconnect the device from the USB cable.

Accessing Settings1. Touch > Apps > Settings .

2. Select the settings category you want to change. To select or clear check boxes (a common setting method), touch the check box. Categories include WIRELESS & NETWORKS, DEVICE, PERSONAL, ACCOUNTS, and SYSTEM.

Battery-Saving TipsManage the Display Brightness and Screen Timeout

► Touch > Apps > Settings > Display > Brightness or Sleep to modify your settings.

Use Task Manager to Stop Applications 1. Touch > Apps > Settings > Apps >

Manage apps. 2. Flick the screen right to left until you reach

the RUNNING tab.3. Touch any currently running application

you aren’t using and then touch Stop to end it. Repeat for any other applications that are running but aren’t in use.

Manage Your Device’s Wireless Functions Disable the Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and GPS functions of the device when you’re not using them.

► Touch > Apps > Settings > Wi-Fi / Bluetooth / Location access and disable any of these functions that are not in use.

Important Privacy Message. This device is capable of determining its/your geographical location. To set controls for access and use of your location information by others, touch > Apps > Settings > Location access. Move the slider to the ON or OFF position to turn location access on or off. Select GPS satellites and/or Wi-Fi & mobile network location for location sources. Follow any applicable prompts. These settings for the use of location information can be turned on and off.
