ackinac State Historic Parks turns 125 years old in 2020. Established in 1895 when the federal government shuttered the country’s second national
park, Mackinac National Park, the Mackinac Island State Park Commission has pursued the important mission of protecting, preserving and presenting Mackinac’s natural and historic wonders. Today, it is a family of living history museums and nature parks located in Mackinaw City and on Mackinac Island. To celebrate this milestone anniversary, MSHP will have 125 days of events throughout the 2020 season, spread across its family of sites and parks. Some highlights include Movies by the Bridge in Mackinaw City every Friday and Movies in Fort Mackinac every Tuesday during the summer, unforgettable evening cannon firing events at Colonial Michilimackinac and Fort Mackinac, numerous events sponsored by the Mackinaw City Area Arts Council themed to the anniversary, special themed weekends at all of our historic sites, intriguing “Hidden History” evenings at Colonial Michilimackinac, guided and narrated treks to some of Mackinac Island’s most beautiful natural and historic sites, and a special gala day, July 25, with free music and fireworks to mark the actual anniversary.
Bière de Mac Brew Works will brew a special beer in honor of the celebration, a farmhouse ale that connects to Michilimackinac with its French roots. An official release of the beer will happen in June. Ryba’s Fudge Shops, with numerous locations on Mackinac Island, will create a special fudge. This should prove to be one of the more delicious aspects of the anniversary. Most of the events taking place throughout the season will be free. Others will be included with regular admission to MSHP’s historic sites. Mackinac State Historic Parks wouldn’t be where it is today without the tremendous support of visitors to its state parks and historic sites. Offering a full season of events is a small way the park can say thank you for 125 wonderful years. The Mackinac Parks: 125 Celebration is sponsored by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan and the Richard and Jane Manoogian Foundation, with additional support from Mackinac Associates.

MACKINAC ISLAND Board either of the ferry lines and you’ll quickly arrive at the Island’s main business district. You realize that you truly are in a different time and place when you hear the clip-clop of horse hooves. Mackinac Island has numerous restaurants, hotels, bars, shops and activities. Bike and horse rentals are available, or take the Mackinac Island Carriage Tour and let someone else do the driving. Top sights to see include Fort Mackinac, Arch Rock, British Landing, and the world-famous Grand Hotel (fee for non-guests). Some of the Island’s best geographic features can be found while biking around its eight-mile perimeter and throughout the hilly interior sections. The Mackinac Island State Park Commission operates 80 percent of the island, which means there are miles of trails and open space preserved for visitors. SAULT STE. MARIE Less than a one hour drive north of the Mackinac Bridge, Sault Sainte Marie, Michigan (“the Soo”) is an excellent day trip destination. The world-famous Soo Locks in Sault Sainte Marie can be viewed free of charge from an observation platform at Soo Locks Park. Sightseeing tours available through Soo Locks Boat Tours provide a unique way to get an up-close view of the Locks, and the
freighters that travel the Great Lakes. While in Sault Ste. Marie visit the Museum Ship Valley Camp, a Great Lakes freighter that was converted into a museum; this location houses over 100 displays, including actual lifeboats from the Edmund Fitzgerald. For a bird’s-eye, 360 degree view visit the Tower of History, which rises 210 feet above the city and boasts views of the Locks, the St. Mary’s River, and a Canadian wilderness stretching into the horizon.
EASTERN UPPER PENINSULA Enjoy an afternoon exploring the Eastern Upper Peninsula. The magnificent amber cascades of the second largest falls east of the Mississippi River, Tahquamenon Falls, are located within Tahquamenon Falls State Park in Paradise, Michigan. Nearby Oswald's Bear Ranch (Newberry) offers four habitats that allow visitors to explore the perimeters and view live roaming bears. Platforms allow unique barrier free viewing. Complete your adventure with a trip to the Whitefish Point Light Station (Paradise) and explore the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum. This world
class museum houses countless artifacts & displays, including the ship’s bell from the Edmund Fitzgerald.
ST. IGNACE Just five miles north of Mack-inaw City across the Mackinac Bridge is St. Ignace, one of Michigan’s oldest cities. Here you will enjoy browsing shops, visiting museums and sightseeing. The largest and most famous event in St. Ignace is the St. Ignace Auto Show, held during the last weekend of June. With over 1,000 automobiles on display, thousands of visitors and hundreds of exhibitors arrive to celebrate America’s fascination with cars. For more information about St.
Ignace, contact the Chamber of Commerce at 1-800-970-8717 or visit www.StIgnace.com
DAY TRIPPIN' AROUND MACKINAW CITY!
CROSS VILLAGE A quiet community overlooking Lake Michigan, Cross Village is known for its scenery and remote location. Visitors flock to the town during the summer and fall months to enjoy the natural beauty that has attracted travelers for hundreds of years. The Tunnel of Trees, a 20 mile stretch of Highway M-119, is famous for its scenic vistas, especially during “color season.” In addition to scenery, visitors also enjoy art galleries and unique world-class dining offerings.

Mackinac Straits Raptor Watch is a non-profit organization that counts the raptors migrating across the Straits of Mackinac each Spring and Fall. We count from easily accessible locations close to I-75, and all are welcome to stop by and learn more about raptors and migration. The Straits of Mackinac in Michigan forms a unique convergence of land and water. The tapering shape of the lower peninsula concentrates migrating birds at its northern tip in the spring as they await suitable conditions to cross the Straits to the upper peninsula. In the fall, Lakes Michigan and Huron funnel migrants to fly south over the Straits. The hawks and owls that follow this migration pathway are of particular concern to conservationists because of their position at the top of the food web. Their numbers and migration timing provide valuable insights into ecosystem conditions. Because of its geography, the Straits is one of the best places in the country for studying raptors in both the spring and fall migration seasons. The national significance of the Straits and the region’s popularity with tourists make it an ideal place to share what we learn about raptors, migration, and the critical natural resources of the Straits of Mackinac with the public. Anyone curious about birds and their migration is welcome to join us during migration at our count sites. Spring migration counts occur between March 5 and June 10. We count the raptors flying overhead from the ball field behind the Mackinaw City Recreation Complex, at 507 West Central Ave, Mackinaw City. In Fall we count migrating raptors from August 20 to November 10 at a site on Point LaBarbe, west of the Straits View rest area. Both sites are close to I-75 and are accessible without leaving the car. Stop by and say hello! Better yet, bring a chair, warm clothes, and binoculars, and settle in to watch. We’re on site between about 10 am and 2 pm, weather permitting. Find us at www.mackinacraptorwatch.org, or on Facebook and Instagram for up-to-date information about which birds are migrating through.

Labor Day September 7, 202063rd Annual Labor Day Bridge Walk Fireworks at dusk
EVERY DAY IS A HOLIDAY!
Labor Day in Mackinaw City is a celebration of epic proportion. Visitors arrive
from around the state and country to cross the iconic Mackinac Bridge in the annual Labor Day Bridge Walk. 2019 marks the 62nd year of the beloved event. Starting last year, due to escalating expense the Mackinac Bridge Authority discontinued busing for the event. This change offers some options: pre-arrange private return transportation on the opposite shore, turn around at center span and return, or do as many have and earn membership in the “Double Crossers Club” by walking from one end of the bridge to the other and back—a 10 mile trek. Some of last year’s Double Crossers are pictured above.
Mackinaw City is home to the Memorial Day Pageant, the longest running, free Memorial Day historical program in the United States. There is no admission charged for the re-enactment pageant or related events. Mackinaw City also hosts the largest Memorial Day parade in the State of Michigan. Join us in celebrating the service of our nation’s Veterans as either a Parade Entrant or a Guest on Memorial Weekend.
Mackinaw City hosts one of the most spectacular Independence Day celebrations in the state. The afternoon kicks off with games on the marina lawn, an annual strawberry social with fresh strawberries, biscuits, and whip cream, followed by a lazy summer evening with a blanket stretched out on the lawn at Conkling Heritage Park enjoying the annual performance of the Straits Area Concert Band and watching the fireworks display over Lake Huron.
