HAPPY BIRTHDAY RESIDENTS! ® Mary Butler is not sure how many quilts she has made, probably in the hundreds since she began quilting in 1990. She took class after class in quilting and eventually she was teaching the class and later began judging quilts at county fairs. Mary began sewing at a young age in the 4-H and sewed all of her four children?s clothes when they were growing up. She has never sold a quilt, she only wants to give them away. Many non-profits, abused kids shelters and cancer center patients are the lucky recipients of her talents. All of her children and grandchildren and great-grandchildren have special personalized quilts that they will treasure forever. When asked what her favorite quilt was she says, ?The one I am working on right now.?So each quilt is important to her. The Centennial Quilt shown in the picture is one of five that she made during the Oklahoma Centennial and it is breath taking. The stitching of every little detail is perfect and amazing. This month, Mary will be speaking about her Route 66 quilt and telling us about each state it goes through as well as the history of Route 66. We will also have the honor of displaying her Christmas quilt, which is currently under construction! December 2017Village on the Park

Where has 2017 gone? As children the days go by so slowly as we anticipate each holiday or special event in our lives. Then as we become adults the years move swiftly by, but what a blessed life we have all experienced. Thanksgiving is a time when we take the time to stop and reflect upon our lives and to count our blessings. It is also a time when we spend more time with families and friends. This year here at Village on The Park we encouraged our residents and staff to take

some time out and remember our holiday traditions or even start a new one. Traditions are a great way to strengthen our bonds with family and reinforce memories old and new. Judy has always loved taking the time to sit down with family at the table (sometimes more than one table) and enjoy Thanksgiving Dinner. Another of her favorite traditions was raking the leaves and watching the family jump in them. Mary loves going home for the holidays, family, football and

don?t forget pumpkin pies. Going for walks after dinner was Irmgard?s favorite memory, after of course eating lots of ?made from scratch" great food. Home cooking in a long held family tradition. A common thread with Kenneth, Sue and Wynema were favorite foods. Isn?t there just something about the smell and taste of familar foods that draw the memories closer? So go ahead, celebrate your traditions and make some new ones!

Keeping Holiday Traditions Alive

Mind, Body & Soul We all look forward to the holidays and hope that they will be a time of happiness, friendliness, fellowship, and harmony. Yet often our anticipation and excitement turns into feelings of depression and/or family disharmony. Some ways to help dealing with the holidays are to: Have an attitude of gratitude, be responsible for how you behave, if you're feeling depressed and lonely, volunteer. Other ways are to decide upon your priorities and stick to them. Remember, no matter what your plans, the holidays do not automatically take away feelings of aloneness, sadness, frustration, anger, and fear. Also don't expect the holidays to be just as they were when you were a child. Do not let the holidays become a reason for over-indulging. And last but not least ?Give yourself a break!?

Making a Difference

Mike serves as our Limo Driver and also on our Waitstaff. He has been with VOP for 1 ½ years. Mike is married with 5 children, 2 stepsons, 6 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. One of the things he loves most in life is to listen to his grandchildren as they sing and play music for him. He also enjoys watching movies and playing golf. Mike was born and raised in Texas.

One of Mike's favorite things to do here at VOP is to drive the residents on errands in the Limo. He also enjoys serving them in the Dining Room. Mike considers it an honor to be of service to our residents.

Thanks for all you do Mike! We are glad you are a part of our team!

Mike Barnhart Limo Driver / Waitstaff

Judy, "Did you wrap yourself instead of your presents?"

Judy remembers playing in the leaves as a favorite tradition at Thanksgiving.
