Turning your Device On and Off
To toggle your device between On and Off simply press the ON/OFF Button. The illuminated green light indicates
the board is powered on.
There are two different power switch assemblies that come on the boards. If you do not have a push button
switch, then you will power the device on and off by tapping the finger stylus on the LED light at the top of the
endcap housing the connector. A green light will turn on indicating that the board has been powered on.
It can take up to 10 seconds for the board's bluetooth module to become available for connections. Battery level
is only available via the Android Application.

Registering and Activating the DCSLinkStream Application
1. Power up your Android tablet or phone and open the DCSLinkStream Application.
2. Upon opening the application, you will be prompted to enter an e-mail address and password. If this is
your first time opening the application, you need to type in an email address that you have access to and
your desired password for your DCSLinkStream account in the boxes.
Important Note: If you have multiple tablets, you'll need to register using a separate email for each (dedicated
email for each tablet). The email can be any account (such as free ones from gmail, yahoo and the like) or from
your own domain.
3. After typing in the email address and password that you would like to associate with your Big Fin
Scientific account, tap the “Register” button.
4. Upon pressing the “Register” button, you will be asked to visit your email address to confirm a 30 day
trial by a dialogue box.

5. Navigate to your e-mail address and find the email from [email protected] and follow the
directions in the email to activate your 30 day trial version of the application. You will click a link in the
email and it will open up a browser to an activation page.
6. Your browser should navigate to a successful activation page that shows the following.
Important Note: If your tablet is running Android version 6.0.1 or above, then you must allow all permissions to
the Big Fin Scientific DCSLinkStream application before continuing to step 8. In order to do this, go to Settings >
Applications > Application Manager > Big Fin Scientific > Permissions. In the Big Fin Scientific application
permissions screen, allow the application to use Contacts, Location, Microphone, Phone, Storage, and anything else
located on this page. This step must be done on android 6.0.1 or above due to the factory OS security settings. If
this step is not done, then you will not be able to sign into the Big Fin Scientific DCSLinkStream application with
your login info.

Activating the DCSLinkStream Application without an Activation Code
The application has been updated so that users no longer need to type in an Activation Code manually to
activate their subscriptions. Once a user has obtained a subscription from Big Fin Scientific, all the user needs
is an active Wi-Fi connection. Manual activation codes are only needed when a user does not have access to
the internet on their tablet. In order to activate a subscription without typing in a manual activation code,
follow these steps:
1. Complete the initial registration shown in steps 1 through 10 above in the Activating Big Fin Scientific
Application section to obtain a free 30 day trial.
2. Obtain a subscription by contacting [email protected] or call 512-808-0346
3. Connect the tablet to an active Wi-Fi internet connection.

4. Now either reboot your tablet or tap the active applications button and close the Big Fin Scientific
Application.
5. After tapping the active application button, the following screen will flash. Swipe the window to the
right or tap on the “X” to close the window. Alternatively, you can tap the option for “Close All” in
the bottom right hand corner. After closing the application, wait approximately 5-10 seconds.

6. For this next step, make sure you are connected to an active Wi-Fi connection. After restarting or
closing the Big Fin Scientific application, reopen the application and the tablet should show the
following screen while the application is loading. If you do not receive the “Updating License
Information…” dialog box when the application has been reopened and is loading, then make sure
you are connected to the internet. If you are connected to the internet and still did not receive the
dialog box during this splash screen, then try closing and reopening the application again.
7. Now if you open the Big Fin Scientific Application Settings and tap on the Activation/Licensing info
option towards the bottom of the screen, then you should see your subscription has been updated
on the page. You have now successfully activated your account.
Note: If you are having issues with your licensing information not updating, please contact Big Fin Scientific
at [email protected] or call 512-808-0346 for customer assistance.

Connecting the DCS Board to the DCSLinkStream Application
1. At the first use, the Application will start with the Main Menu showing (accessible via the triple-bar icon in
upper right of the screen.) Select "Application Settings.” This will open the Import/Export page in the
application settings.
2. Tap on Peripherals on the left column and then "Select Fish-Board: None" on this page. This brings up a
dialogue box in which any detected Bluetooth devices are listed. Select the name which corresponds to
the Fish-Board you wish to connect.
Getting Started
For help, write to: [email protected] or call 512-808-0FIN (0346) Page 22
3. Tap ‘Pair’ when the pairing dialog displays with the PIN autofilled in. Then, a success message and a "board
ID" with a bunch of numbers will briefly show after connection to the board. In addition, the top info-bar
will now display the Fish-Board name next to "Connected Board". The battery level and firmware level of
the board will also show up in the application settings.
4. You can test the connection by placing the measurement stylus down in the center stripe of the board and
looking for a "stylus down" indicator in the lower corner of your screen (looks like a pencil).
5. Connection to the Fish-Board may take several attempts, especially if the Fish-Board has been recently
disconnected. This appears to be a limitation of the Bluetooth wireless protocol and is considered
normal. Power-cycling the Fish-Board and re-attempting to connect may solve connection problems. In
rare cases, turning off the Bluetooth radio in the tablet, then re-starting the radio is required.
6. The application will remember the Fish-Board ID in the future and will auto-connect to the DCS board
whenever the application is started. If somehow the Bluetooth connection is lost, then the auto-connect
feature will start looking for the Fish-Board to re-establish a connection. This status can be seen and
edited in the yellow status bar at the top of the screen. A timer will start at 2 minutes and begin counting
down from there. While this timer is going, the application is actively searching for the Bluetooth signal
from the fish-board.
Note: The auto-connect feature will also automatically connect to other peripherals such as a scale or PIT Tag
reader. The tablet just needs to be paired and connected to the hardware once and then it will remember it in the
future going forward.
Current Users
If you're a current user of the DCS application and running a version of the software earlier than v1.5, you may
notice a name change from Digital Fish Science to DCSLinkStream. In order to get to v1.5 and beyond, just follow
these easy steps
Backup and Install
1. Create a manual backup of your application database. You'll find this option under Application Settings > Backups
> Create a Backup. It is smart to name your backup something unique so that it is easy to find and restore later.
Getting Started

2. Uninstall your current version of the application
3. Navigate to the Big Fin Scientific website to find the most current version of the application found at the following
link: http://www.bigfinscientific.com/dfs-app-latest-beta
4. Install the application by following the directions on the webpage
Log in
Open the application and go through the login process with your email address and a password. If you want to
create a new account, then follow the steps in the Registering and Activating the DCSLinkStream Application
section of this document. If you do create a new account, you need to contact [email protected] in
order to activate the new account.
Note: If you have multiple tablets, you'll need to register using a separate email for each (dedicated email
for each tablet). The email can be any account (such as free ones from gmail, yahoo and the like) or from
your own domain.
Activate if Necessary
1. If you're a Fish-Board Owner or a DCSLinkStream Application Subscriber, please write us to receive your
activation code, which extends the expiration of the application (takes away the trial status). Write
to: [email protected] . You won't need to do this often.
2. Enter the activation code in Application Settings > Licensing or just open the application while connected to WiFi
to complete this step automatically.
Restore and Setup
1. Restore the backup you created to your application. The backup is found easily if you gave it a unique name.
2. Restore any lost settings which may have occurred (audio, auto-fill lists, as examples), due to the uninstall/re-install
process. In the future, un-installation will be rare, so you won't have to do this every time you update.
