Getting Started With Your New Nokia Lumia Windows Phone

If you just purchased a Nokia Lumia and you’re not sure how to set it up, this guide is for you. Let’s start with the basics. When turning your phone on for the first time you’ll be presented with the screen below, where you will choose the default language you’d like to use with your phone.

Simply select get started to proceed to the language selection and select next in the bottom right corner if you’re satisfied with the default language. If you wish to choose a different language, please note that the device will require a restart in order for the language to activate. Once the device restarts, you will be welcomed back and prompted to select next to continue. Next you’ll have to accept the Windows Phone terms and conditions, which you must accept to proceed.

The next step of the set-up involves system customizations, such as allowing the use of cellular data, and automatically downloading Windows Phone updates. For the purpose of this guide we’ll proceed with the recommended settings, however, feel free to customize the functions of your phone and select next if you’d like to customize the settings. Additionally, you’ll need to confirm your region, time zone, and whether or not you’d like to set the date and time of your device automatically. Let’s continue with the default settings and select next.

The next step is connecting to Wi-Fi which we’ll skip for now and proceed with the creation of a Microsoft account. If you already have a hotmail.com, Outlook.com, Xbox or Windows account, simply select sign in and use your existing account information, otherwise select create one . If you choose to create an account, simply enter the requested information such as the email address, your date of birth and any other required info, to complete the account creation process.

Once you’ve completed this step, you have the option to back-up your data to the cloud. The information saved can be your photos, SMS history and phone settings, such as downloaded applications. We’ll enable this feature, so please select yes when prompted.

This will complete the standard setup of your new phone. You should see the home screen below.

If you’re migrating from another phone, Nokia offers a tool to transfer your data from your old phone, such as contacts, SMS history and photos via Bluetooth. Please note that data transfer capability can vary from Android, IOS and BlackBerry.

To transfer your old content, simply enable Bluetooth on your old phone and make sure the device is visible to other Bluetooth devices, then hit continue on your Lumia. At this point your new phone will search and should list your old device.

Select the name of your device on the Lumia to pair your devices to begin the data transfer. Note, a PIN will be displayed on both devices, make sure they match before proceeding and hit ok to continue. You’ll be presented with the content that can be transferred to your new Lumia phone. Select the content you wish to transfer and hit start. The data transfer will begin and provide a rough estimate of how long it will take to complete.

Now that your data has been transferred, we can move on to setting up your email addresses. Click the Settings icon in the application list on your new Lumia and select email + accounts, then add an account and select the email service you are looking to add. For the purpose of this guide, we’ll use Yahoo! Mail, however, the process is similar across other email services.

Just enter the full address of the email you are looking to add, enter the password, and hit sign in to continue at which point you will be prompted to name this email account.

Your email will now begin syncing to your Lumia device! If you want to change settings, such as how often to check for new messages or which content to download from your account, simply click the service you wish to modify to see a list of available options. Additionally, Windows Phone can connect to other services such as your Facebook, LinkedIn, or Twitter accounts. This allows all social media accounts to be available in

one location via the People hub on your phone. Simply select the service you wish to use, enter your credentials, and you’re good to go. Although not required, we recommend the steps below to secure your device in case you ever lose it. The first step is to setup a Password for your device so that if you lose it, anyone that finds it cannot easily access your private data. To set this up, please go to Settings, then select the lock screen and scroll down to the bottom and toggle on the Password option. Enter a password and select done when you have confirmed the password.

The final step of this guide is a quick overview of the Find My Phone feature which allows you to locate or erase your phone if you have lost or misplaced it. It’s enabled by default as long as you have a Microsoft account associated with your Windows Phone. Once set up, simply go to WindowsPhone.com, login with your Microsoft account, and select the functionality, such as Erase, that you wish to accomplish with your phone.
