CHAIRMANS REPORT At the risk of being accused of an understatement, I must say that 2019/2020 was a challenging year for the Geelong Rood Relief Centre and our community in general. With the passing of our much-admired Chairman Ross Stephens on 26th September 2019 and my own need for a what resulted in a number of abdominal surgeries, there was a huge workload for our CEO Collin Peebles and his team. Together they held the fort while I recovered, and the AGM was finally held in February 2020. Thanks to all who managed the Centre throughout this difficult period. In memory of Ross and his contribution over the years to GFRC, the Ross Stephens Service Award has recently been established to acknowledge volunteers who achieve five years or more of service. The Ross Stephens Service Board now hangs proudly at our North Geelong Centre and already has the names of thirteen volunteers engraved. The passing of Ross was just the first of the significant issues which impacted the Centre. March heralded the start of the COVID-19 restrictions. From 13th March, quantity restrictions were introduced at the Mini-Marts due to declining recoveries and supplier shortages. With declining volunteer numbers and food recovery shortages, our Lt. Smythe Street Mini-Mart was suspended on 23 March followed by Freedman Street on 6 April. Following a review, the decision was made to continue with the Bulk Distribution directly to charities committing $20,000 of GFRC reserves each month, if necessary, for food purchases. To our surprise, this initiative received outstanding community support with the following organisations providing funds: City of Greater Geelong, Connected Communities, Project Foundation and Bisinella Family. ($75,700) Through April and May, until the Mini-Marts reopened, with this funding and $19,800 of GFRC funds, $95,500 of food was purchased and distributed to thirty-two of our partners. In addition to the financial support to purchase food, the Centre received significant donations and rent relief to support the operation. Colliers Charitable Fund and The Anthony Costa Foundation were amongst those organisations who supported GFRC when voucher income ceased. We are indebted to these organisations and individuals who supported GFRC during this critical time and we offer our sincere thanks.

GEELONG FOOD RELIEF CENTRE INC. ANNUAL REPORT 2019-2020

Throughout the COVID crisis, our Executive continued to work for a larger home for GFRC. In May, Social Ventures Australia (SVA) completed its report to Council on the Food Relief System in the Geelong Region recommending that GFRC be the operator of an expanded Food Relief Hub in Geelong. The SVA report along with a submission from GFRC supported by our many partners, resulted in a motion being passed at the 26 May 2020 Council Meeting to provide GFRC with $1,000,000 in capital to redevelop the premises at 37-41 Morgan Street, North Geelong for a Mini-Mart and warehouse. In addition, the Council set aside $150,000 per annum for five years for rent, operational costs and to enhance stakeholder engagement. Architectural Drawings have now been prepared, and at the time of writing, the Board was finalising the funding agreement with the Council, the lease and building contract. The Geelong Food Relief Centre Food Hub will provide a much larger Mini-Mart and warehouse with extensive office space, dedicated meeting room, large kitchen and overall much better facilities for our volunteers. – see page 5 The project to provide Geelong with a true Food Relief Hub has taken over two years to bring to fruition. I would like to thank the Council of the City of Greater Geelong for taking this bold step, the first of its kind for local government in Australia. Particularly worthy of our thanks and appreciation is Councillor Pat Murnane who never tired in his support. Also, I would like to thank the Council Officers involved, the Stakeholder Group chaired by Keith Fagg, and SVA – a great team effort. What remains now is to complete the project both on time and budget. In previous Annual Reports, the Chair has thanked our volunteers and Board, who work without remuneration, and the staff who deliver our Mission. With what has occurred over the past twelve months, our community should be grateful to have such a dedicated group working to provide Emergency Food Relief – thank you all. With the Ross Stephens Service Award, we have now have a means to recognise our long serving volunteers. This year however I would like to especially recognise Roslyn Haby who recently celebrated 25 years of service - what a fantastic effort. Financially, despite the disruptions of the COVID19 pandemic, the Centre remains in a good financial position with lower voucher income offset by grants and donations. Also, we have substantial pledges of financial support for 2020/21. But of course, much will depend on the control of the virus. It has been my pleasure to Chair such a worthy organisation. Thank you to all our volunteers, staff, Board, partners, suppliers, Council and others who gave us support to meet the challenges. Maurie Anglin GFRC Chair

VOLUNTEERS: Our dedicated team of volunteers provides the “people power” to keep the Centre up and running 5 days a week. The Food Rescue Program sees our transport leaving at 7:30am daily to collect fruit, vegetables, bread and ambient products for our mini marts and bulk distribution facility. Throughout the day, our volunteers work constantly so our clients find a well-stocked, clean “shop” and are made to feel welcome when they walk into either Centre. This adds up to about 22,000 hours a year. It is often said, but well worth repeating, without their help the Geelong Food Relief Centre would not operate We would also like to acknowledge the following donors, who have helped to make all of this possible throughout 2019/20. FINANCIAL DONORS: Feed Geelong Campaign $5,000 Geelong Project Foundation $5,700 Kiwanis Club of Geelong $6,000 Geelong Connected Communities $10,000 Bisinella Trust $10,000 Collier Charitable Fund $20,000 Gandel Philanthrophy $20,000 Perpetual Trust $20,000 Transport Accident Commission $20,000 Anthony Costa Foundation $30,000 Give Where You Live $30,000 City of Greater Geelong $50,000

CLIENT STORIES Ben is a single gentleman who is currently boarding in Geelong. Ben recently rang GFRC to ask if he could obtain Emergency Food as he hadn’t eaten for a few days. We invited Ben to call into our North Geelong Mini-Mart where he was able to obtain food. Ben was extremely relieved to be able to eat. He was amazed at the amount of product and variety. GFRC also gave Ben some contact numbers where he could also obtain some additional assistance. Vanice is a Deakin International student who lives with seven other students in a house who were struggling to feed themselves. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, they have very little finances to cover the cost of food purchases. Vanice was amazed with the variety of food that GFRC stock. She couldn’t think of anything else she could possibly need. Vanice also can’t believe how friendly and kind the volunteers were in helping her do her shopping.

Mark first visited us 6 years ago. He is still unable to obtain full time employment. He has no idea where he would be today if it wasn’t for GFRC. After paying his bills, Mark often finds, he doesn’t have a lot of money left over to purchase food. Mark loves visiting GFRC because he feels it is like shopping at any other supermarket. He finds the variety great and is able to purchase everything he needs to make meals etc. He also loves the fact that everyone at GFRC are so friendly and make the time to stop for a chat.

Torquay Food Aid is one of many charities that pick up once a week from Geelong Food Relief Centre. Michael is amazed at the range of Fresh Produce and non-perishable product they can collect for their needy clients. Michael mentioned during this COVID-19 pandemic with so many charities depending on Geelong Food Relief Centre, we are still cheerful and eager to assist and answer any questions we may have. Michael also stated that without Geelong Food Relief Centre, most charities would have to either purchase their supplies locally or attempt to find food stocks in Melbourne which would be a huge drain on the resources of volunteers. The resources of many food charities are quite limited and in such time as COVID-19 he is sure many would have to close their doors, unfortunately. Shirley helps run Osborne Circuit Co Op. Osborne House is a community of people who work together to meet their housing needs.

Co-op members share activities in the management and running of their co-op. Shirley has been calling in to Geelong Food Relief Centre each week for about 3 years arriving to collect food for 40-50 families to share.

Shirley feels without GFRC these people would struggle to feed their families. Shirley loves the variety of food and is so grateful to be able to obtain food. Shirley also loves the friendly atmosphere and chats she has while visiting the GFRC Bulk Distribution Centre

Jessica is a young mum with four children. She was unable to go back to work as she needs to be home for two of her children who have disabilities. She was introduced to Geelong Food Relief Centre by St Vincent De Paul as she was struggling to provide enough food for her children. Jessica loves all the nutritious food she can obtain from the minimart especially the fruit and vegetables. She also loves how the volunteers can explain the points system and how easy the system is to shop by. Jessica looks forward to coming in to have a chat and always feels she has had a great experience.
