A Message from your 2014-2016 Iowa State President, Gayle Hanna
Welcome to the 2014-2016 GFWC/Iowa administration.
How was your summer? Mine was hectic, but great.
I hope that during the next two years we will SOAR TO NEW HEIGHTS!
There is much work to be done and everyone must do their part to keep on
the right flight and attain our goals that we have set.
What we do affects our future in keeping our organization the very best.
There are many needs, as volunteers to be met.
My emphasis is Feeding the Children or Feed America. With these goals we
can make people realize that we do care. They, in turn, will perhaps try to be
better themselves and also do great things.
We need to spread the word about the work that we do. Publicize, publicize, publicize?
How can we make out organization stronger? One way is to recruit new members and retain the
current members.
Women are powerful. There is nothing we can't do when we set our minds to accomplish things
whether they be small or large.
As many of you know, I like the arts. Encourage our youth by getting involved ourselves e.g. going
to their plays, concerts, dance recitals, etc.
Many of you may have watched a bald eagle nourish the young, getting them ready to fly.
Let us soar to new adventures and do good work for our communities.
Keep flying!
Yours in Federation,
Gayle Hanna

CONSERVATION
Karen Martinek- GFWC/Iowa Conservation Chairman
This year we will continue with some of the same projects we had for the last administration. We will
continue to encourage planting of trees and supporting
Trees Forever Programs and Arbor Day Programs, including the Nature Explore
Learning Programs.
We will continue to recycle scotch tape rounds and dispensers and
prescription pill bottles. So continue to save these items and bring to Your District and State Con-
ventions for Pick up.
We also will continue to make and place monofilament fishing line recycle bins near favorite fishing
spots
and recycle the fishing line collected from these bins.
A new program from our National Conservation Chairman is to help conserve the Monarch Butterfly
and other pollinators such as the Honey Bee. Plant a good monarch habitat. They need both milk-
weed and nectar plants during breeding. Use of herbicides, real estate and agricultural development,
and climate change all contribute to the decline in the monarch population.
We will find programs and projects for us to help conserve our clean drinking water.
Remember the rain barrels to save and use rain water on our lawns and gardens.
Look for More Information at your District Conventions!
Here ’ s an idea!
Make “ Birthday Buddies ” for children or adults at the Domestic Violence
Shelter. Each “Birthday Buddy ” should include at least a cake mix;
frosting; paper plates and napkins; balloons and birthday candles. You
could it in a pink bag for girls or a blue bag for boys. You could include a
toy, hair accessories for girls, bubbles, crayons etc. Use your imagination!

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE
Happy Fall!! I hope you are all working on your recruiting programs and events for this year.
GFWC again this year will have some grant money available for these. I will be bringing grant info
and other GFWC handouts to the District Meetings. We will be “ soaring with the eagles ” these
next two years so we need to find ways to entice them to land in our nests and help us in hunting
new birds for our clubs. We will try to make this a fun year of recruiting with our new avian theme
with some prizes and who knows what else. One club has already sent me a new member.
If there are more, please let me know as soon as possible so I can turn them in to GFWC. Hope to
see all of you at your district conventions with lots of membership recruitment ideas. We will be
winging your way soon!!!

I am looking forward to meeting as many of the GFWC/Iowa Community Service Program Chairmen
as possible at the State Board meeting and possibly District Conventions. Materials describing the
various programs can be found in the Club Manual which is on-line at GFWC. There is a section for
each program that you might want to print off for easy accessibility.
Recently, I received a list of District Chairmen for these programs which I will send to the State
Chairmen as soon as possible if you do not have it. District Chairmen could also contact their
District Vice-President once the Club Program books are received by them to obtain the names of
the club members in charge of your particular program area.
Local clubs members should determine which projects they would like to focus on. It could be a
tried and true project, or maybe you would like to try something new. Remember, you can do as
many or as few as you are comfortable with.
All of the Community Service Program Chairmen would really appreciate your participation! Let ’ s
make this a year of great projects.
