from the Editor

If you went to the doctor tomor-row and he said, “You have cancer,” you would probably not go home and forget about it. It would occupy your mind. You would pray about a solution that involved healing. It would be an undercurrent in your every mental pursuit. You would not forget about it or ignore it. You would seek treatment….it would be a very real and consuming part of your life.

Yet there are times in which we try to treat overwhelmingly catastrophic situations as if they didn’t exist. We pretend they are not there or are not as bad as some think. America and part of the American church has such a problem.

Since it became legal in 1973, abortion has killed almost 50,000,000 babies. That’s fi fty million and that’s just the ones we know about. The current rate is over a million a year.

While there are renewed efforts to stop this heinous slaughter, many in the church are growing tired of hearing about it. I recently read about a couple who had stopped going to their church because they were tired of hearing about ho-mosexuality and abortion. They said, “ Yeah, it’s probably wrong, but people have the right to make their own choices don’t they?”

I fear they refl ect a growing ambivalence among many in the church who have been lulled by the world’s incessant drumbeat. They thought it was wrong at one

time and but now they are not sure. And those who will still say that abortion is wrong are willing to ignore it if it doesn’t touch them or their families directly. Since God has not judged America for what their preacher calls murder, then it must not be so bad. They would never say it, but this has become the prevalent attitude among a growing number in the church.

But who says God is not judging America for her slaughter of our innocents?

I fear America is headed for judg-ment as surely as a cancer left untreated grows daily and even-tually kills. I am amazed that we can go about our business and seem to forget that not only has our government said that our con-stitution guarantees a woman the right to kill her baby, but it says you have no right to protest using your tax money to pay for it!

I have read scores of articles and books on the subject. You probably have too. It is easy to understand the logic and truth of doctors and scientists who have maintained for years that life begins at conception. Even abortionists now will agree that it does.

They realized years ago that the argument on which the Su-preme Court based its decision was specious. Even such stellar proponents of abortion as Faye Wattleton, former president of Planned Parenthood said in an interview with MS Magazine “I think we have deluded ourselves into believing that people don’t know that abortion is killing. So any pretense that abortion is not killing is a signal of our ambiva-lence, a signal that we cannot say yes, it kills a fetus.”

They now admit that abortion kills a child, they just argue that the mother’s rights trump those of their children.

Chief Justice Harry Blackmon, writing for the majority (the vote was 7-2) said, “The judiciary, at this point in the development of man’s knowledge, is not in a posi-tion to... resolve the diffi cult ques-tion of when life begins... since those trained in the respective disciplines of medicine, philoso-phy, and theology are unable to arrive at any consensus.”

One glaring problem with that

Missouri Show-Me Missions

Our state-wide MO FWB Missions fundraiser this past October was a success on at least 3 levels.

It was a success at the Associational Leadership level.

Usually when you have a new project, the confusion in the how, where, when and who becomes the reason to set it aside for an-other time. This was not the case with our associational leaders who embraced the idea and allowed myself, or the Mission Coordina-tor, the opportunity to promote our Support Walk.

This cooperative attitude and the work of our associational Mission Coordinators in the planning, promoting and participation of the event is the primary reason the Support Walk was a success. Without them, this event would have been much less than what it was.

Whether I got to talk in person or on the phone, it was exciting for me to discuss with the Mission Coordinators about what needed to be done and then hear them re-spond with ideas and enthusiasm.

That enthusiasm continues even now, two months after the event, because each of them has already made notes as to how to make the 2010 Support Walk even better in

Dear friends,

Just over 3 months have passed since returning to our place of min-istry in Tokyo. Under the watchful care of fellow missionaries, Dale and Sandra Bishop, Good News Chapel church members continued to grow in the their faith during our stateside assignment absence.

One area of growth among the church members has been in the different outreach projects hosted by the church. Shortly after return-ing, the church sponsored a Gospel Music concert with Christian singer/evangelist Hiroshi Yoneda. Church members were responsible for planning and developing the afternoon program and outreach emphasis. There was a great unity of purpose in making the concert as effective as possible for the presentation of the Gospel. Mem-bers were able to see several of their friends and contacts attend the service. There was great joy at the end of the day in having advanced the Gospel through the mini Gospel Concert and accompa-nying refreshment/discussion time at Good News Chapel.

A spirit of servanthood was also clear during October and the 55th anniversary service of FWBs in Japan. Good News Chapel took on a semi formal reception following a piano recital by former mission-ary Fred Hersey’s son, Paul, as part of the opening service of the two day meeting. The church hosted over 60 people in the small one room store front facility with a wonderful spread of snacks, fruits, and homemade Japanese delica-

cies. One of Paul Hersey’s friends, a rather infl uential Japanese politician, also enjoyed the quaint atmosphere and warm fellow-ship of the FWB associational meeting. Good News Chapel especially served the Iriso FWB by highlighting their 40th anni-versary during the associational reception. Iriso FWB church is the mother church for Good News Chapel.

Just recently, another sign of growth caught our attention. During a “church vision session” several members clearly voiced creative ideas for the future of our church plant. It was the fi rst time the church body had collectively voiced their ideas for new min-istry opportunities that they felt might be strategic for the growth of the church. We were thrilled with the input and the serious concern that was given for com-munity infl uence and outreach.

The McDonald’s The McDonald’s Please rejoice with us in these signs of growth in this body of believers at Good News Chapel in Tokyo. Though small in number God is working in their midst. Your offerings are helping to make this urban mission possible and your prayers will continue to ensure that we see God’s mighty hand of activity upon us.

It is January 2010 and time for us to begin planning for the WORLD MISSIONS OFFERING in the month of April.

In 2008, Missouri stepped up to the plate in giving on this special occasion. Our wonderful churches through their faithful members gave $36,086.12 to participate in sending God’s servants to the for-eign fi elds. This was an increase of 31 % over the $24,854.35 total of the previous year.

In 2007, 10 of our 19 associations participated and in 2008, 14 were involved. This year we hope to see every association giving to support our international missionaries.

Today, our young people are an-swering God’s call to missions. As they complete their studies, they are applying to FWB International Missions to send them out into the regions of spiritual darkness to serve our Lord.

Some are headed into hard places where the Gospel is resisted but so desperately needed. They look to God fi rst of all, but you are their second line of hope. Without our faithful giving and praying, they can only look toward their place of call with anxious and longing hearts. How can we fail them, and worse, how can we fail our God?

Last year all of our fi elds produced the following results:

* 1,081 churches and mission works

* 1,732 salvation decisions

* 595 national pastors and lay preachers

* 491 Bible institute students

* 37,851 average weekly church attendance

Through the WMO, supporters help fuel church planting move-ments around the world -- the fu-ture has never been more exciting for FWBs.

Carol and I are Mission Ambas-sadors to the state of Missouri. We are here to serve and we would be delighted to visit your church,

association, or quarterly meet-ing to present the WMO and the “Change the World” coin banks.

My phone number is 417-209-0968 and our e-mail is: [email protected] .

We will be looking forward to services in your area.

Actually, there’s no such thing as a “typical” day here at the Seminario Bautista Libre de Panama in La Paz de Chame. While we have classes Monday through Friday every week, and the students go out to minister in the local church to which they’re assigned, every week is different.

Everyone comes back on Sunday evening. We gather at our house for a light supper, such as hot dogs, pizza, or sandwiches, and then we talk about how the weekend went. It’s exciting when one of the students tells of leading someone to Christ, or about their youth meet-ing, or going on visitation with someone from the church. We pray together, sing songs, and have fel-lowship.

Some weekends we go out as a team to just one church. In fact, we did that 5 times this year, the most recent (and fi nal) time being November 20-22, when we went to Las Tablas. How’s this for a week-end: Lunch at the seminary, then three hours to Las Tablas. A quick supper, then load into the vehicles and go to El Pedregozo, about 30 minutes away where the students, sang, gave testimonies, and Lino

preached in the town square to people we’d invited and passers-by who stopped to listen. The pastor counted 21 people who attended some or all of the service.

On Saturday we had breakfast and then met at the church in Las Tablas to divide up into teams to go into a poor neighborhood in the town of some 7,000 inhabitants. We passed out tracts, shared the gospel, and prayed with people over personal needs. I was thrilled to watch Pas-tor Raul and Favio lead two ladies, a mother and a daughter, to Christ. What made our visitation time even more interesting was that we went on some of the same streets where the Jehovah’s Witnesses had just been. For some reason, the people were more receptive to us.

That night we went to another com-munity of probably less than 200 people, Los Pozos, where we had another service, with around 30 in attendance.

On Sunday, the students led wor-ship, taught Sunday School, did mime, and Julio Barahona, a second year student who’s studying for the ministry, preached.

When we got back to Chame that afternoon, we were exhausted, but rejoicing.

Classes resume on Monday morn-ing and go through Friday morn-ing. There is also one class on Tuesday and Wednesday after-noons. The students have work detail each afternoon, Monday through Thursday.

When the school year’s over in a week or so, I’m going to try and get an idea of how many sermons have been preached, how many les-sons taught, how many decisions for Christ, how many people have been discipled, and how many visits our students have made. Our students have been a blessing in the churches this year!

At the same time, here at the seminary we’re grateful for all the help the churches have given us, in foodstuffs, cleaning supplies, per-sonal items for the students, work days, and offerings to the seminary. We’re also grateful to the churches in Missouri and to the Show-Me Plan for your strong support for this ministry. Vacation time is almost here, but we look forward to the new school year which starts on March 15.

statement is that Chief Justice Blackmon was lying. There was only doubt in the minds of those who were trying to justify mur-der. Medical science had settled the issue generations before. You could not have found an accepted medical text at the time that was doubtful about when life began.

Even the American Medical As-sociation as far back as 1857 said that “the independent and actual existence of the child before birth, as a living being”was recognized by science. They said that it was simply “popular ignorance...that the foetus is not alive till after the period of quickening.”

The idea that life did not begin at conception was not cloudy be-cause medical science was unsure. It was only cloudy in the minds of those desperate to create a right to kill that did not exist in the constitution, the public mind or the Bible. Really, what the con-stitution or public opinion says is immaterial in this discussion. The only opinion that counts is God’s and He has never had or expressed any doubt.

David declares in Psalm 139 that God knows him well for He is the one who created him in his moth-er’s womb. Life is from God and we are created in His image. He is our lifesource and the only one with the right to decide who lives and who dies. Those who take upon themselves the authority to say that is it acceptable to end the life of the unborn because they will be incon-venient or are unwanted are setting themselves up as God.

Another of the judges who voted to legalize abortion was Justice William O. Douglas. He said that the unborn do not have the right to life…they have no legal stand-ing. That was truth as he knew it in January of 1973.

Yet in 1972 Justice Douglas, in a suit brought by the Sierra Club seek-ing the right to sue developers on behalf of nature wrote that “val-leys, alpine meadows, rivers, lakes, estuaries, beaches, ridges, groves of trees, swampland, even air that feels the destructive pressures of modern technology and modern life,” all have standing. That means that they have more right to life than the unborn. He went on to include “the pileated woodpecker,

as well as the coyote and bear, the lemmings as well as the trout in the streams…should not be stilled.” Aren’t you glad we have had such dingbats sensitive judges on our courts. Wonder if he was so eloquent the day he stood in front of God for judgment and tried to answer for himself.

America is being judged for her unwillingness to obey God. We are watching our nation decline more rapidly than at any other time in modern history. We might blame it on the government or big business or the environmental-ists. They all certainly play a part, but there is a greater issue at hand While we beg for God’s blessing for our country and our churches and our families, I wonder if the voices of those we have allowed to be killed might be louder than ours.

When America goes down and is neither a Christian nation nor a world power, don’t look around and ask what happened. Remem-ber that David said in Psalm 33:12 Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD…

The Reverend Vernon Long, veteran Free Will Baptist pastor and Mis-souri state home mission-ary, has announced his retirement from full-time ministry, concluding more than forty years of service to the Lord and to Free Will Baptists.

Jackson Free Will Baptist Church, where Pastor Long and wife Ada, has

been serving for the last eight years, honored their pastor the last Sunday of September with a dinner and tributes including both cur-rent members and a number of members from previous pastorates.

Deacons Warren Livingston (MO) and Laron Dye (MS) were among those who traveled to Jackson to honor their former pastor for his years of service. With an abun-dance of fami-ly and friends on hand, the church began its farewell to their found-ing mission-ary.

An afternoon of special music included local members as

well as the Reverend and Mrs. Bud Statler, fellowmembers of the Southeast Mission Association of Free Will Baptists.

The Missouri native, himself the son of a FWB pastor, Long origi-nally served as a deacon at the Free Will Baptist Church in Festus, MO. Following his surrender to God’s calling into the ministry, Rev. Long and his family moved to Nash-ville where he attended Free Will Baptist Bible College, graduating in 1977.

After graduation, Rev. Long served as an associate pastor in Virginia. From Virginia, Rev. Long went on to serve as pastor of Victory Free Will Baptist Church in Jackson, TN, and then returned to his home state where he pastored the FWB church in Leadington, MO.

Then came the burden on his heart for establishing a FWB work in the Jackson, MO area. With his approval as a state home mission-ary, Vernon Long served faithfully until the church was transferred into self-supporting status in 2008. Pastor Long continued on with the Jackson church during the next year to see the church through this vital transitional period.

Since his last service at Jackson, Rev. Long is continuing to serve the Lord and Missouri FWB through guest sermons at various Free Will Baptist churches. Even in retirement, the Reverend Vernon Long continues to serve his Lord and his denomination.

Who? What? Where? When? Those are questions that give us informa-tion.

Who are we? We are the Missouri State Free Will Baptist Youth Camp - affectionately called “Camp Ni-angua.”

What are we? We are an extension of each local church in our state to teach our young people about life in Christ, equipping them with knowl-edge, friendships, and zeal to serve Him.

Where are we? Physi-cally, we are located at 7627 State Hwy. M in Niangua, Missouri. But where we are as far as this article is concerned is in the process of unprecedented growth. To experience what God is doing in this special place is a won-der to behold. At the beginning of the 2009 camp season, we had just completed the boys’ dorm. It was a long process that went slower than anticipated, but even-tually it was fi nished. It is housing for our young people like we have never had before here at Camp.

The long term goals of the Camp Board included plans for a girls’ dorm, however, in light of the economy it seemed that this goal would be diffi cult at best, and maybe even impossible to accom-

plish. Little did we know that God was already working toward that end. God turned what we thought was impossible into reality in just a few short weeks after the 2009 camp season.

In just 12 weeks, we removed cab-ins, excavated the building site, and put up a girls’ dorm because of the generosity of the people of the Fourth Free Will Baptist Church in St. Louis. Their dona-tion of $150,000 made it possible for us to frame and complete the outside of the building. Unfortu-nately, the generous donation only gets us part way to our goal.

Now we are waiting for God’s plan to provide the funds to fi nish the inside of this new building to

Who? What? Where? When?by Bruce Moore, Camp Superintendent

make it habitable for our young ladies. We have provided pictures to give you a glimpse of what the building now looks like.

There are 24 rooms inside this dorm. Each room will hold 12 girls, for a total of 288 people. At this time we do not know God’s fi nancial plan for the completion of the girls’ dorm. We know that it will cost approximately $10,000 per room to fi nish. We are praying and ask you to pray with us for God’s direction and provision.

Maybe He would direct someone to send a lump sum as He did to start the project. Or, maybe a church or individual would like to

adopt a room and provide the $10,000 to fi nish one room at a time. It is built in such a way that we could complete one room at a time, if that is God’s plan for us. We are excited about what God is doing here and wait with expect-ancy for what comes next.

When will our goal be accom-plished? I do not know the answer to this question. Just a few short months ago, I would have said maybe never. But God provided, and now I just say “WOW! God is good!” Again, please pray with us that God’s will be done here at Camp Niangua, because we could hope for nothing greater.

Jeff is senior pastor at Unity Free Will Baptist Church in Greenville, North Carolina. He was ordained to preach the gospel in April of 1987, after completing his B.A. in Bible and Pastoral Training at Free Will Baptist Bible College in Nashville, TN, in 1986. He then pursued his Masters of Divinity at Bob Jones University in Green-ville, SC, and graduated in May of 1990. Two months later Jeff as-sumed the Youth Pastor position at Unity. After one year of work-ing with the young people, the church voted for Jeff to become the Senior Pastor, the position he has held for the last 14 years. While serving as pastor, Jeff completed his Doctor of Ministry degree in Expository Preaching from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, KY, and graduated in December, 2002. He and his wife, Jennifer, were married on May 25, 1985, and have three children: Jena, Jake, and Joanna.

their association. I count it a real privilege to work with Missouri Free Will Baptists in missions sup-port!

Individual Participation was success-ful.

Although most Coordinators were hoping for more participation from their association, the participation was amazing in particular areas. Some surprising facts were that the vast majority of those who par-ticipated were 35 and up. A slight majority were 40 and up.

Then there were the seniors. Twenty-two of them, that I know of, are 60 and up, and one of those was 82! The individual who raised the most, over a thousand dollars, was in her 70’s, and yes, she did the whole 5 miles – on her Rascal. Some of our 22 seniors didn’t do the whole 5 miles, but they did do all they could, and I am proud of them for trying.

I am very pleased with the 130 or so participants of this year’s

Support Walk. I am pleased with the smiling faces I saw as they approached the fi ve mile mark. I am pleased with their willingness to earnestly pray for their church and for our missionaries at the designated stops. I am pleased with their efforts to fi nd sponsors beyond their fellow church mem-bers. And, I am pleased with their commitments in looking forward to doing it again next year. The participation was a success.

The Funds were beyond expectations.

In this fi rst time ever scenario, I spent more on awards and promo-tion than I will probably ever do again. I wanted this fi rst attempt to be done in a memorable way. I do think that was accomplished, because we not only supplied nice, polo style, Support Walk shirts to the associational leaders, we also gave those who raised $200 or more a choice between a large sport duffl e bag or an MP3 player.

When it was all over with we had given away 34 MP3 players and 12 duffl e bags. You may be thinking, “Most of the participants were 40 and over, and you gave away 34 MP3 players?” All I can say is a lot

Support Walkcontinued from page 4

of grandchildren are using Sup-port Walk labeled MP3 players this holiday season.

But even with spending $3,300.00 for awards, promotion, travel and mailing, we still cleared over $19,000.00! Praise the Lord! All of that has been divided and sent to help support our State, National and International missionaries.

Yes, our fi rst Support Walk was a success on several levels. But most of all it was an opportunity for our Missouri Free Will Baptists to go beyond check writing and budget setting for missions. This event not only allowed them to get physi-cally involved in the support of our Great Commission endeavors by raising support outside of their church but it also got them up early on a cold, October, Saturday morning and let them commit that time to prayer, fellowship and united work for the cause of Christ.

May God richly bless us as we continue to work toward His Will, for “It is His Will that none perish but that all come to repentance.”Frank WebsterMO FWB Mission Director

The book, And Who Will Follow is a new novel by Dr. Alton Loveless written in conjunction with Mrs. Amy Gann.

While spending 145 days in two St. Louis hospitals Dr. Loveless began writing this novel in his head. Upon return-ing home, he found that his wife had prepared his rehabilita-tion room with a new computer. Focusing on the writing of his novel helped to ease his physical discomfort and kept him from feeling sorry for him self.

“I have been a writer and publisher for many years, but writing a novel was a completely new adventure for me,” stated Dr. Loveless. “Amy, a masterful editor and writer, helped bring clarity to the book.”

And Who Will Follow is a 42 chapter heartwarming novel containing war, history, romance, missions, ministry, church, world religions, and geography. It deals with the heartbreak of lost love, confl icts with peers, failure to do what is right and the consequences that come with each decision made. It is a story of misplaced values and how God puts a person into situations to fulfi ll His plan.

Beginning in the early 1960s, the book’s main character, Lieutenant Allen Livingston, fi nds his life turned upside-down. Throughout the next two decades he learns how God can use others to reveal His purpose to a person wherever they may be in the world. He learns how life may have been detoured by heartbreak, but that one can still fi nd fulfi llment and peace when they return to God’s Will.

The Rasmussens, two Austrian doctors and supporting char-acters of the book, chose to leave opportunities for wealth and comfort to give their lives for the poor and homeless in one of the poorest countries in the world. It’s in a medical and teach-ing compound that they give more than fi fty years of their life to this humanitarian effort with one thought plaguing them: And Who Will Follow Us?

Local towns, places of this area and the area where Dr. Loveless grew up in Arkansas, have formed a background for the story. The characters, while fi ctional, were drawn from relationships in Dr. Loveless’ past.

Another book was written by Dr. Loveless entitled “Come Travel With Me,” was published in the spring of this year as well. The books are available from Xlibris and other national vendors,eg, Amazon, etc.

Testimonies for And Who Will Follow.

Bro. Alton, Loved your book, Come Travel With Me. The stories were heart-warming, funny, and sometimes made me cry. Thank you for sharing life experiences with life lessons. I also enjoyed the Civil War story. Actually, I enjoy everything you write. God has given you such a gift and you bless so many with this gift. Linda, Doctors wife, Tulsa, Oklahoma

You’re amazing, Alton Loveless. Most people who have major surgery and spend 145 days in the hospital only bring home a tired body. You, on the other hand, brought home an idea—an idea that became well-written book.

I hope others enjoy reading And Who Will Follow as much as I did. It’s a family-friendly book, a story of forgiveness, an adventure into the world of music, a history lesson, a country boy’s recollections, and a love story…all in one volume.Wow! This volume is special. It comes from deep inside you, and it touches the reader where it matters most, right in the heart.. –Jack Williams, Nashville, Tennessee

NASHVILLE, TN—Seventy-one prospective students from 12 states and 26 churches attended Fall 2009 Welcome Days November 19-21 at Free Will Baptist Bible College, according to Jeff Caudill, director of enrollment services. With parents and sponsors, the campus visitors numbered 87 for the three-day event. Mr. Caudill said, “We were delighted to have such a promising group of high school students on campus and look forward to a number of them enrolling, several as early as next fall. The college community really came together to host the event with current students sharing their rooms with guests and answering questions. Faculty and staff assisted with the Friday evening meal and prepared desserts. We couldn’t have asked for better cooperation.” Visiting high school students attended classes and chapel, interacted with FWBBC students, enjoyed a performance by the music and drama department, participated in Friday evening’s Low Country Boil, attended a fi nancial aid seminar, and more. “I have decided to come to FWBBC,” said Ron Carter, a visiting student. ”I tried to get away from the idea of attending FWBBC. However, coming to Welcome Days helped me decide that I want to be here as a student.”

Provost Greg Ketteman hosted a Friday reception for high school seniors, recent graduates, sponsors, and parents. The college will sponsor other student-oriented events during spring 2010—Senior Days (January 21-23 and February 11-13) and Welcome Days (April 1-3). Student Recruiter Rachel Dennis said, “One of the most reward-ing parts of my job comes from seeing how campus dynamics change when Welcome Days guests arrive.

It’s exciting to watch FWBBC students pour themselves into visit-ing high school students who are here to determine God’s plan for their lives.”

Pastors and their families are under a lot of pressure. Pastors appreciate encouragement from others who’ve been in the trenches. In ministry since 1962, H.B. Lon-don understands the needs these leaders encounter in our postmodern culture--on-the-job, in their marriages and with their families. His heart is to encourage pas-tors and instruct them in the practical pastoral issues they struggle with daily. Now the countless conference talks, e•mail devotions and encouraging messages of H.B. London have been expanded and revised to cre-ate a timeless series of devotions for pastors. Topics like personal integrity, your family’s call to ministry and marriage growth are discussed from a caring mentor’s perspective. The devotional also deals with leadership issues including staff relations, unity with your congrega-tion, counseling families through grief, and many more.
