Offers praise to you.

CATAMOUNTSPORTSNETWORK

Seven stations across the region including Western North Carolina and the upstate of South Carolina are slated to carry the 2010 broadcasts of the Catamount Sports Network (CSN), led by the fl agship station, WWCU-FM, Power 90dot5 in Cullowhee. Perennial network affi liate, Jackson County Radio, 680 AM WRGC in Sylva, returns to the fold, as does WPTL, 920 AM in Canton, The Dove, 1490 AM WPFJ in Franklin, and 1600 AM WTZQ in Hendersonville .

This year marks Western Carolina’s return to the airwaves in the Charlotte area with the addition of two stations that bracket the Charlotte metropolitan area. Catamount football broadcasts can be heard this fall on 1150 AM WAVO in the Charlotte / Rock Hill, S.C., market and also on 1410 AM WTIX in Concord / Kannapolis.

CSN has again partnered with Stretch Internet (www.stretchinternet.com) to provide unlimited streaming audio through the athletics web site, CatamountSports.com. Fans can log onto the offi cial website of Catamount athletics for streaming audio provided by the Catamount Sports Network.

Gary Ayers is set to return to the microphone as the play-by-play voice for both football and men’s basketball in 2010-11. All told, Ayers has been behind mic for 24 of the past 25 years and has been a familiar voice to the region’s sports fans for over three decades. In addition to serving as the “Voice of the Catamounts,” the Swain County native has done play-by-play for Pisgah High, Tuscola High, Franklin High, Cherokee High and Swain High football and bas-ketball. Ayers also spent several seasons as the public address announcer for WCU Athletics.

Also returning to the air waves this fall are Jeff Bryson, who will resume color analyst, and sideline reporter, Greg McLamb. Bryson, a 21-year radio veteran ranging across the state, has also served as the Public Address voice for WCU athletics since 1998, while McLamb – a 2000 graduate of WCU – will patrol the sidelines for a third season.

Bryson’s radio experience dates back over 20 years. During that time, he has worked at a variety of stations including WZZU-FM in Raleigh; WCHL-AM in Chapel Hill; WKSF-FM in Asheville; and served as the program director at WRGC-AM in Sylva. Bryson is no stranger to the Catamount Sports Network as he worked with CSN providing color analysis for football and men’s basketball for the 1995 and ‘96 seasons. Additionally, he has provided various play-by-play football and basketball broadcasts for Smoky Mountain, Franklin, Cherokee and Pisgah High Schools over the past 18 years.

Steven Crumpler, who has handled the play-by-play duties on CSN for women’s basketball each of the past six years, returns as the network game day producer and halftime show host. A 17-year veteran of radio, Crumpler is a former program coordinator of WWCU-FM in Cullowhee. Before arriving in Cullowhee, Crumpler served as the student station manager at WSIF-FM in Wilkesboro, NC while obtaining his associates degree in broadcasting from Wilkes Community College in 1997. During the same period, Crumpler also worked as an announcer for the 100,000-watt super station WKBC-FM/AM in North Wilkesboro. All told, the Whiteville, N.C., native has called Lady Catamount basketball for eight seasons dating back to 2000.

Another voice that is scheduled to be heard on CSN this fall includes current Assistant Athletic Director for Media Relations, Daniel Hooker. The primary contact for Catamount football, Hooker will also assist in the production of the pre-game show. The 2001 graduate of WCU also assists with men’s basketball broadcasts, as well as handles play-by-play duties for Catamount baseball.

The Catamount Sports Network broadcasts using the Tie-Line i-Mix G3 unit, with net-work breaks transmitted through a 360 Systems Instant Replay machine. Also in use are a six-channel Shure M367 Mixer and a Shure PGX2/SM58 Handheld Transmitter and PGX4 Diversity Receiver.

2010 SEASON OVERVIEW IN BRIEF

Western Carolina and the eight additional Southern Conference football teams will show their support for those being negatively impacted along the Gulf Coast by wearing helmet decals with the initials “GC” during the 2010 football season, the 89th-consec-utive in the conference. More than 170 SoCon foot-ball players come from states that share a coastline being affected by the oil spill. The nine institutions that play SoCon football agreed to display the de-cals to express their support and encouragement for the people living in the region.

“Pete Lembo of Elon approached me with the idea while we were at our annual coaches’ meetings in June,” noted Southern Conference Commissioner John Iamarino. “I lived in Louisiana for six years and my son was born there, so when Pete mentioned it, the concept really resonated with me.

“Given the number of SoCon football student-athletes who come from Gulf Coast states and our being located in the South, it seemed the right thing to do. It’s just a small way that our teams can express their support and encouragement for the thou-sands of families that have been negatively impacted by the oil spill.”

Use of the decal was approved by the NCAA’s rules committee and supervisory of-fi ciating organization upon request by the conference.

Looking to build upon the strong fi nish in 2009 which saw the Catamounts play well against a pair of nationally-ranked teams – Elon and Appalachian State, both of which were ranked sixth at the time of the game – and defeat Eastern Kentucky on the road, third-year head coach Dennis Wagner returns his deepest and arguably his most talented pride of Catamounts in 2010.

A combined 16 seniors including All-Southern Conference selections WR Marquel Pittman, DB Mitch-ell Bell and K Blake Bostic return for their fi nal season in Cullowhee looking to leave their mark on the rebuilding program. Western Carolina also returns starting QB Zack Jaynes and the 2009 SoCon Fresh-man of the Year, RB Michael Johnson.

All told, through the preseason depth chart, the Catamounts return 22 players which saw action in 10-or-more games a year ago including 12 total starters.

OFFENSIVE OUTLOOK OVERVIEW:

Coming into the 2010 season, Western Carolina’s offense has “youthful experience,” in that among its seven returning starters from ‘09, six are juniors or younger with just four seniors on the unit. WCU had two redshirt freshmen – Teddy Rhoney and Nathan Postelle – start all 11 games along the offensive front a year ago that are returning. They will be joined by senior Jacoby Hammon, who missed last season due to injury. The Catamounts will have to replace three from the offensive line from last season – C Victor Aquilina, G Steven Ray and T Matt Winter – but do have the most depth in Wagner’s tenure.

Offensive playmakers for WCU include redshirt junior signal caller, Zack Jaynes, who will be pressed in the preseason by South Carolina transfer, Zac Brindise, and senior transfer Matt Wabby. Whomever wins the battle for the quarterback position will have talented wideouts in Pittman, sophomore Jacoby Mitchell and Central Michigan transfer, Deja Alexander.

Running back is deep for WCU in 2010 with the returning Johnson and redshirt sophomore Dion Wil-son. After being converted from receiver last year, the illusive junior Nate Harris continues to relish in the “scatback” role.

New assistant coaches Jeremiah Ross (offensive line) and Pat Arthurs (tight ends) join the offensive staff under the guidance of third-year offensive coordinator, Keith Heckendorf.

DEFENSIVE OUTLOOK OVERVIEW:

Western Carolina’s defensive depth chart features 15 juniors and seniors including the aforemen-tioned Bell and safety counterpart, Angelo Brown. The 2010 unit promises to continue the aggressive style of defensive coordinator, Matt Pawlowski.

Up front, WCU returns a very talented group including seniors C.J. and Charles Johnson, fl anked by third-year starter, junior Trey Selby and returning redshirt freshman, Brian Johnson. The depth of the de-fensive front will be key as Bevans Robbs, Quevalas Murray, Nate Stephenson and transfer Walt Woolwine – among others – will see ample playing time.

In the secondary, Western Carolina returns talented linebackers Ricky Schwarz and Rock Williams with converted defensive back Brandon Vaught and Brett Allen also factoring in the depth chart. One of the biggest additions was the return of Adam Hearns, who switches from offense to defensive secondary after a year away from football, at the hybrid “drop” linebacker position.

The Catamounts return senior Jideofo Okwudiri and junior Torez Jones at the corner positions with sophomore Eljer Martinez and redshirt freshman Mike Anderson also expected to fi gure in on playing time and to gain valuable experience.

After forcing 26 takeaways in 2008 including 14 fumbles and 12 interceptions – and fi nishing with a +7 in turnover margin – WCU struggled by only creating 10 turnovers a season ago with eight fumbles and only two picks. That has been an area of emphasis for the defensive unit during the off-season.

There were a couple of coaching changes on the defensive side of the ball for WCU as assistant coach Mark Rhea (defensive line) joined the staff thus moving Justin Roberts to the linebacking corps. Also, Michael Mayers joined the staff as a defensive assistant during the off-season.

SPECIAL TEAMS OUTLOOK OVERVIEW:

Western Carolina returns all three specialists that saw action a season ago, headlined by Fred Mitch-ell Award candidate, senior K Blake Bostic. Already ranking tied for eighth on the school’s career fi eld goals made list with 18, Bostic is coming off a solid season where he made 8-of-10 fi eld goals and led the team in scoring for the second-straight year.

Junior punter Blake Cain, who earned SoCon Special Teams Player of the Week and All-Freshman Team plaudits back on 2008, returns and is expected to handle most of the punting duties. Second-year veteran long-snapper, senior Zak Warner, also returns for his fi nal collegiate season.

The returning “Blakes” will be challenged by returners Leo Gamez and freshman Stephen Weiss as the season moves along.

2010 CATAMOUNT FOOTBALL SCHEDULE:

Western Carolina’s 2010 football schedule features fi ve home dates including the 35th edition of the “Battle for the Old Mountain Jug” against Appalachian State on October 23. The 11-game schedule opens with a pre-Labor Day road meeting with North Carolina State in Raleigh on Saturday, Sept. 4 and the regular season concludes 10 weeks later with the Catamounts hosting Chattanooga on Saturday, Nov. 13 at E.J. Whitmire Stadium / Bob Waters Field.

The Catamounts are scheduled to open the 2010 season at N.C. State, rekindling a 24-year old rivalry against the in-state foe. WCU last faced the Wolfpack in 2003 season-opener for both squads, falling to the then 14th-ranked ‘Pack, 59-20, at Carter-Finley Stadium. One week later, Western Carolina will open the home portion of its 2010 season by hosting the NCAA Division II Tusculum Pioneers out of the South Atlantic Conference on Sept. 11.

The Catamounts will then round out the non-conference portion of its 2010 regular season by visiting Gardner-Webb in Boiling Springs, N.C., on Saturday, Sept. 18.

Western Carolina opens eight-straight weeks of Southern Conference play on the fi nal weekend of September by hosting Chattanooga on Sept. 25. WCU opens the month of October with a trip to Charles-ton, S.C., and to Johnson Hagood Stadium to face The Citadel, the Catamounts’ lone conference win last season. Homecoming Weekend in Cullowhee is Oct. 9 as the Samford Bulldogs visit E.J. Whitmire Stadium / Bob Waters Field ahead of the Wofford game in Spartanburg, S.C., on Oct. 16.

The annual gridiron grudge match, “Battle for the Old Mountain Jug” against arch-rival Appalachian State, will be played on Saturday, Oct. 23 in Cullowhee, the earliest meeting between the two mountain rivals since an Oct. 20 meeting in the 1990 season.

The rivalry match-up not being at or near the end of the season isn’t a novelty, though, as the Cata-mounts and Mountaineers opened the season against one another in 1986, and have met mid-season a combined four times since WCU joined ASU in the Southern Conference in 1976.

WCU will make a return trip to Furman’s Paladin Stadium on Nov. 6, last falling by just seven points, 28-21, to the Paladins in 2008’s meeting in Greenville, S.C. The home portion of the regular season closes by WCU hosting Georgia Southern on Nov. 13. The last time the Eagles ventured into Cullowhee, the Catamounts had them on the ropes before a feverish fourth-quarter rally saw GSU rattle off 35 unan-swered points, including 28 in regulation, in a 38-31 come-from-behind, overtime victory.

Redshirt senior Marquel Pittman headlines the Catamount wide receiver corps. for the 2010 season. He aver-aged a team-best 56.2 yards per game a season ago. Pittman was a preseason second team All-Southern Conference selection at wide receiver.

In addition to Pittman, fi ve wideouts have seen collegiate action at WCU in-cluding Josh Cockrell, Jacoby Mitchell, George Richardson and Dre Thomas, combining for 43 catches last season.

Transfer Deja Alexander is expected to compete for playing time opposite the aforementioned Pittman with depth at the position to provide good preseason competition.

NOTES:* Western Carolina averaged 162.7 yards per game and scored nine touchdowns through the air a season ago;* Marquel Pittman was the lone WCU wide receiver to catch a touchdown pass in 2009, recording all fi ve of the WR scores.

Redshirt junior quarterback Zack Jaynes, who started all 11 games in 2009, is the lone returning signal caller for the Catamount offense. All told, the Canton, N.C., native has started 17-straight games for WCU at the quarterback position over the past two seasons.

Jaynes will be joined in the race for starting QB by transfers Matt Wabby (Pierce College) and Zac Brindise (South Carolina), who both came to Cullowhee over the summer. Freshman Brandon Pechloff could also see time under center if he is not red-shirted.

NOTES:* Only one of Western Carolina’s quarterbacks on roster has played in a NCAA Division I football game – returning QB Zack Jaynes;* Jaynes ranked seventh in the SoCon in pass effi ciency (111.9) in 2009 ... Jaynes completed 58.6-percent of his passes last season, fi nishing 178-for-304 with nine interceptions and nine touchdown passes;* Western Carolina averaged 195.5 yards per game through the air a season ago while combining for a 57-percent completion rate and 18 touchdowns;* The passing game accounted for 53% of WCU’s fi rst downs in 2009 – 72 of the 135 fi rst downs – and nine of the 19 offensive touchdowns.

Entering the 2010 season, Western Carolina will be stronger, more physical and deeper along the offensive line – but still quite young. Anchoring the unit are red-shirt sophomores Nathan Postelle and Teddy Rhoney, both of whom started every game a year ago. Jacoby Hammon will return after being injured a season ago at tackle, and along with junior transfer Edixon Pino-Alvarez at center and Ryan Moore, will be called upon to help the youthful Catamounts along the offensive front.

WCU will mix in red-shirt freshmen from a season ago Gil Broadway, Wesley Cook, Justin Campbell, Matt Hastings and Vince Williams. Also, mid-semester transfer in freshman Dan Polaski and four additional true rookies will look to gain experience for the future success of the offensive line.

NOTES:* Western Carolina allowed 29 sacks a season ago, an improvement over the combined 40 given up during the 2008 season.

OFFENSIVE LINE (17)

After losing two tight ends to injury a season ago in Andrew Rogers and Tay-lor Spangler, WCU returns four capable players at that position for 2010. Chris Everett was the biggest passing threat off the line a year ago while Conner Orr stepped into a blocking role in helping with the WCU rushing attack.

Rogers, who was WCU’s top receiving tight end with 19 catches in 2008, suffered a knee injury three games in that sidelined him through the spring while Spangler suffered a serious broken leg during spring drills. He has three career receptions.

NOTES:* Chris Everett was the only tight end to record a catch in 2009 with he and Con-ner Orr splitting time at the position with the injuries to Andrew Rogers and Taylor Spangler ... Everett caught nine passes including three for touchdowns.

For the second-straight season, one of the most experienced positions on the fi eld for WCU in 2010 will be at defensive back. Western returns six players that appeared in eight-or-more games a season ago, including All-Southern Confer-ence performer, Mitchell Bell who started all 11. Senior transfer Jarón McNeill joins classmates Bell, Angelo Brown, Jideofo Okwudiri and defensive newcomer, Adam Hearns, with a host of newcomers adding talented depth in the defensive secondary with underclassmen Brett Allen and Elijer Martinez.

NOTES:* Mitchell Bell enters his senior season with six career interceptions, the most among all returning defensive backs;* Two of WCU’s top three leading returning tacklers are DBs – Bell and Angelo Brown).

Western Carolina is youthfully experi-enced at the linebacking position en-tering 2010. Ricky Schwarz is the most experienced and ranks as the leading returning tackler from a year ago with 67 total hits in just nine games. Red-shirt freshman Rock Williams played in 11 games with three starts and con-verted defensive back Brandon Vaught who has 16 games under his belt will also add experience at linebacker.

WCU will lean upon transfer Michael Reardon, who sat out last season, with the infl ux of youth for the linebackers in-cludes standouts Courtland Carson, Andre Whitmire and Marcus Stokes provid-ing additional depth.

NOTES:* WCU will look to replace second team All-American linebacker Adrian McLeod who led WCU with 137 total tackles in 2009;* Ricky Schwarz and Rock Williams rank tied for fi rst and fourth among WCU’s leading returners with a combined 97 stops a season ago.

A pair of players named Blake – Blake Bostic and Blake Cain – headline the returning specialists for Western Caro-lina. Bostic will handle the bulk of the place kicking duties including fi eld goals and kickoffs, while Cain enters the new year as the primary punter. For a second-straight season, Bostic led the team in scoring with 39 points including eight fi eld goals and 15 made PAT attempts. Redshirt freshman Leo Gamez from nearby Tuscola HS will add depth and competition for the kicking duties in 2010.

Senior Zak Warner will again handle the long-snapping responsibilities.

NOTES:* Western Carolina ranked third in the Southern Conference in fi eld goal percent-age a season ago, connecting on 8-of-10 for an 80% success rate;* WCU had an average net yardage of 33.3 yards per punt – seventh in the SoCon – and an average of 40.1 yards on kickoff coverage, sixth in the league.

Anchored by seniors C.J. and Charles Johnson and fl anked by junior end Trey Selby and redshirt sophomore Bevans Robbs, the Western Carolina defensive line is among the most veteran units on the fi eld.

Returning redshirts Brian Johnson and Quevalas Murray, as well as converted defensive end Nate Stephenson as well as junior transfer Walt Woolwine will provide depth – but more importantly, depth that has been in the Catamount system for over a year.

Expectations are high for incoming freshmen Roland Johnson and Pete Balthrop, Jr.NOTES:* Having to replace three key members off the defensive line from a year ago, WCU returns 58 tackles along its defensive front, including 11.5 tackles for loss; * Charles Johnson leads the four returners with 19 stops a season ago with 5.5 tackles for loss.
