STAR PRODUCERS...Carolyn Herbel

The Star Producers System was developed throughthe research we did while writing our book, THECOMPLETE LHASA APSO, in order to rate theproducing ability of sires and dams in our breed.

It was first published in March, 1981 in the breedmagazine LHASA TALES.The Star producers System includes all producers

with the qualifying number of champion offspring. It isnot intended to compete with the ROM (Register of

be that the owner is not a member of ALAC, or is amember but has not applied for the title, or the owner of

Benitez/Wilks FundThe RAC Support Fund

This fund was originally established by Raena Wilks in 1983 to help ALAC charter officer and member DorothyBenitez who was destitute and dying from cancer.

The next need for the fund was in 1984 when the Chenoweth home and kennel facility burned and their needs werehelped by our Benitez Assistance Fund.

In 1986 on their way to the ALAC National Specialty from Colorado to California in a motor home, ALAC memberGreg and Marion Brake, experienced a fire in this vehicle losing several dogs and all their belongings. The Benitez fund cameto their aid by paying for their lodging in California.

Raena Wilks was distressed because members did not respond to her requests to replenish this depleted fund and in1988 requested that it be suspended which it was until the ALAC board of Directors reestablished it in 1992 by advancing thefund $500 and requesting that the ALAC treasurer set aside all monies donated to the fund to reimburse the ALAC generalfund and build up the Assistance Fund.

In 1992 Michael Santora and Alan Loso were the next ALAC members to receive assistance when it was known thatthey had sustained major hurricane damage.

Contributions totalling $179.00 were received in 1992 from Barbara Wood and Norman & Carolyn HerbelThe next request for aid ironically was a request for aid to help with laying to rest our ALAC member Raena Wilks

who had originally established the Assistance Fund. This request left the fund in the red $320.At the July 5, 1993 ALAC Board meeting the name of the Dorothy Benitez Membership Assistance Fund was changed

to the Benitez/Wilks Fund.At the 1993 National Specialty one Lhasa Game was played for the fund and made $185.Contributions additionally have been bade by the following:

Amy Andrews, Helen Curtis in memory or Raena Wilks, Virginia Anderson, Lek Dau Lhasa Apsos in memory of Robert E.Schrank, Jr., Tabu Lhasa Apsos (Norman & Carolyn Herbel and Carmen & Max Spears) in memory of Patricia Chenoweth andRobert Schrank. Lhasa Apso Club of Northern California in Memory of their founding member, Pat Chenoweth, and inmemory of Bob Schrank.

These contributions amounted to 605.00 leaving a balance of 285.00 in the fund and an outstanding $500.00 stillowned to the ALAC General fund which means that the fund is still in the red in the amount of $215.00.

All contributions will be greatly appreciated by all those that may need our help in the future. Please send your donations clearly marked for the Benitez/Wilks fund to the ALAC Treasurer, Carolyn Herbel, Route

Palsy. . Finish?When Pigs Fly!!!

In Daisy's case, though, pigs "fly" on a daily basis.

Fortunately, she was able to take time out from her schedule and her 182 squeaky pigs

for those last two majors. We would like to thank ex Irwin (shown below with Daisy)

for letting her take over his house with her travel pigs, and swat them, flip them and hide

them to her heart's content. (She does get kind of annoying after several hours!!!!)

Thanks also goes to Judge Don Kogers (shown below with Kex and Daisy) and

Judge Frank Wolaniuk for rewarding this darling little girl with two majors.

WHAT LEGACYARE YOU LEAVING TO THE BREED?

As a breeder or an owner, haven'tyou wished you knew more about thedogs behind your lines? How many timeshas some fault or virtue cropped upleaving you wondering where that camefrom? Mostly these are little things thatmay surprise us at the time but they arenot devastating.

Now consider what could happen toyour own breeding program if yourfoundation bitch or stud dog was discov-ered to have crippling hip dysplasia at theage of 6 years? More than likely you arenow two or three generations away fromthat dog and may have line bred on himor her. Was the dog used at public stud? How many puppies are out there with hipdysplasia? Have other breeders unknow-ingly added this to their own lines byusing your stud or purchasing puppiesfrom you?? Are you prepared to startover?

Actually, I saw this happen to afellow breeder. Breeder "A" purchased apointed adult dog from successful, well-known Show Breeder" B". The dog wasshown to his AKC championship andbred several times. When the dog wasfive years old, Breeder A noticed that hewasn't as lively as he used to be butthought it was just laziness. This pro-gressed until one day the dog wouldn'tget up to cross the kennel. Thinking thedog had injured himself, she took himinto her veterinarian.

Not being able to find any injuries, the veterinarian suggested spine and hipx-rays. Much to their surprise, the hip x-rays showed the worst set of hips that the

radiographic specialist had ever seen onany size dog! By this time, Breeder A hadalready purchased and bred several broodbitches from Breeder B. All these dogsand their available off-spring were thenx-rayed. One of the brood bitches wasdysplastic as were several young dogs outof the original dysplastic Champion LhasaApso.

Yes, hip dysplasia is out there, and itis in Lhasa Apso show and pet lines. Weare not facing a major problem at thistime, but we cannot continue to ignore it.As of January 1, 1994, a total of 543Lhasas had been evaluated by the Ortho-pedic Foundation for Animals (OFA). Ofthese, 8.6% were dysplastic. That's notquite 1 in 10. However, these figuresare misleading because a large percent-age of x-rays that show evidence of hipdysplasia are not submitted to OFA.

Could this happen to you? The an-swer is Yes! What can you do to protectyour breeding program?• Have your dogs x-rayed and

cleared for hip dysplasia.• Breed to OFA registered stock

when possible.• Encourage others to x-ray.• Check hips before you buy.

It is not a great deal of trouble or costwhen you consider what could happen ifcrippling hip dysplasia turns up in yourbloodlines. The question is, can youafford not to x-ray?

Hip x-rays can be evaluated at anytime, but only those taken after the dogreaches 2 years old may qualify for anOFA breed registry number. Preliminary

evaluations of younger dogs are offered, but if you want an OFA number, a new x-ray will have to be taken and submittedafter the dog is 2 years old. OFA doesnot require that the dog be anesthesizedfor the x-ray. This decision is left up tothe veterinarian. It is suggested that OFAx-rays not be taken when bitches are inseason, pregnant, or in false pregnancy.

All submitted x-rays are first judgedon quality and clarity. If the x-ray qualityis not suitable, it is immediately returnedto the veterinarian. Accepted x-rays arethen independently evaluated by threeradiologists. Owners and veterinariansare notified by mail within 3 to 6 weeks.

Your OFA report will list one ofseven categories:

1. Excellent Hip Joint Conformation:Superior hip joint conformation ascompared with other individuals ofthe same breed and age. (10.1% ofthe Lhasas evaluated.*)

2. Good Hip Joint Conformation:Well formed hip joint conformationas compared with other individualsof the same breed and age. (61.4% ofthe Lhasas evaluated.*)

3. Fair Hip Joint Conformation:Minor irregularities of hip jointconformation as compared with otherindividuals of the same breed and age.(19.9% of the Lhasas evaluated.*)

4. Borderline Hip Joint Conformation:Marginal hip joint conformation ofindeterminate status with respect tohip dysplasia at this time. A repeatstudy is recommended in 6-8 months.(0.4% of the Lhasas evaluated.*)

5. Mild Hip Dysplasia:Radiographic evidence of minordysplastic changes of the'hip joints.(5.2% of the Lhasas evaluated.*)

6. Moderate Hip Dysplasia:Well defined radiographic evidenceof dysplastic changes of the hip joints.(2.4% of the Lhasas evaluated.*)

7. Severe Hip Dysplasia:Well defined radiographic evidenceof marked dysplastic changes of thehip joints. (0.6% ot the Lhasas evaluated.*)(*As of January 1, 1994)

Because of the obvious differences be-tween breeds, x-rays are compared toothers of the same breed at the same age.Only those rated in the first three catego-ries are considered normal and willreceive an OFA breed registry number. Ifthe x-rays do not pass, OFA notifies onlythe veterinarian and the dog's owner. The x-rays themselves are no longer kepton file, but the images are capturedelectronically and stored on optical disks.

OFA now releases to the AKC listingsof dogs that receive registry numbers andthey are published quarterly in the AKCAWARDS Publication. They are also partof the sire's and dam's informationprinted on the blue AKC puppy registra-tion applications, the individual AKCregistration certificates, and the AKCcertified pedigrees.

Hip dysplasia will not be con-trolled by veterinarians, the AKC, or OFA.All the x-rays in the world will not elimi-nate it. The breeder alone is responsiblefor choosing the dogs that are to be bred.Clear your own dogs and start asking studowners for OFA certification. Preventionis far wiser and cheaper than the conse-quences. Make the responsible decision -think of the legacy you are passing on tofuture generations of breeders. When itcomes to hip dysplasia, ignorance is notbliss . . . it's a time bomb waiting toexplode.

Obedient LhasasThis will be the first of a series of articles on obedience that Steve and I hope will encourage more people to train

their dogs to respond to and obey some basic commands, such as the down-stay and the emergency recall. Wefeel teaching a few basic commands builds a foundation for the future happiness of your Lhasa and yourrelationship; be it as home companion, conformation dog or obedience competitor. Steve and I have three Lhasaswith CDX's, one of which is a champion.

The following is the story of my first, a straight Hamilton red Lhasa named Gaby:

Beginnings

Our introduction to dog shows really came when we decided to train Gaby in obedience. Our lives have not been the same since.

Gaby Plauget CDX has always been high-strung and very attentive to the world around her, She is also very chary of strangers. Atthe young age of 7 months, we decided to enroll her in obedience class at our local community college. We hoped to socialize herto other dogs and people and help her settle down. There were about 50 people -plus dogs- in that class; which is way too many forone teacher. Luckily, as always happens, the class shrunk quickly. Our instructor was the "force-type" trainer that used to be common7 years ago. Basically, we marched up and down the parking lot, teaching the dog to heel by our left side. We jerked our dogs forwardif they lagged or jerked them back if they forged. With so many dogs, it was quite a circus. This is really a bad way to teach a Lhasa,or any other dog for that matter! My worst experience with this class was a dachshund that was hung by its' choke collar, by theinstructor, until it quit barking. Needless to say, they owners of the dog never returned.

Despite this beginning, Gaby and I persisted. Like every Lhasa that I have trained, Gaby learned very quickly and went straight to

the top of the class early. Unfortunately, they get bored just as quickly, and then they get creative. The force training does work;though, in a manner of speaking, you pay a price! Gaby began lagging, with her tail down, wondering what was going to go wrongnext. Luckily, she was very forgiving, and I had enough sense to realize that constant corrections were not working for her. Asobedience did help her settle down and become more social with other dogs and people; I was encouraged enough, to join an advancedclass with a private instructor.

Onward

Thus began our formal training for actual competition. We enrolled in a class taught by a lady who showed golden retrievers.

This was our first experience with prejudice against certain breeds; especially small, furry ones, who don't fit the classic"obedience mold". Gaby and I, along with the other two small dogs, were shuffled off in a corner where we received minimalattention. Despite this, we managed to learn; sometimes faster than the Goldens! This class was a revelation though; as we wereencouraged to use any method -that worked- to get our dogs to perform correctly. It is much more fun for everyone if you arepraising, instead of reprimanding, all of the time. What worked for Gaby was: food, playing with toys, and tons of praise.

Fun and Games

Obedience is a constant challenge; even more so with a smart Lhasa Apso. You always have to be one step ahead of them or all

is lost. Some of the training hints that worked for me were: don't do heeling exercises for more than five minutes at a time; trainbetween classes only once or twice a week, only do an exercise a few times and stop when they do it correctly (none of this "onemore for good measure"), and end your training with playing or a fun walk or whatever they love most.

By the end of the class, Gaby was working with her tail up and was terribly pleased with herself. After each exercise that she

did correctly, she would promptly sneeze and bow her head. She always knew! Learning to read your dogs body language is oneof the great things about obedience training; but, the biggest reward is the close relationship that develops.

Obedient Lhasasby Karen L. NicholsContinued

On The Line

Gaby was finally ready for competition! I will never forget our first time in the ring in Muskogee, Oklahoma.. I was shaking so

hard, I could hardly walk straight. The judge was very nice and really helped me to relax. I will never forget his face; he reallymade it a lot easier. When we won first place, with a 193 out of 200, I was so stunned that I burst into tears; much to myembarrassment now. Gaby went on to get her CD in three shows without ever busting. Our only problem was the stand forexam. Gaby, true to her heritage, loathed being touched by strangers. When the judge would come up to her, I would startsweating and Gaby's skin would crawl when he went over her; but she never moved!

With this success, we moved on to Open work. True to form, Gaby learned everything first in her class. She loved jumping

and retrieving, it was a wonderful game for her. In fact, she loved the dumbbell so much, that I had to restrain her from taking allof the other dog's dumbbells. It was quite comical to see her dragging a huge dumbbell meant for the golden retriever! She couldbe very quick.

In a relatively short time, we were in the Open ring. She got her first leg, first time out. I thought we were in for a repeatperformance. Open work is full of surprises. This is when the dog starts working away from you and it doesn't take long beforethey figure out what they have to do and what they don't have to do. In other words, Gaby decided she knew more than I did! Sheloved heeling, jumping and retrieving, but why did she have to sit for three minutes when I wasn't even around. Good time to takea nap! Eight shows later, she's ringwise and breaking the sit stay all the tim. In class, she does it perfectly. We never can fool herinto laying down so we can correct her. She even does 10 minute sit stays and never moves a paw! What frustration!

So Close

One show she was actually 30 seconds from a flawless sit stay when someone dropped a trash barrel. Gaby jumped straight up

and forward three feet into a perfect sit. That is where I found her when I got back. If any other dog had moved, we could havedone it over; but, no luck. This was one instance when Gaby's sensitivity to sound was her downfall.

She did get her CDX in 12 shows with scores all in the 190s, but it sure did teach me a little humility. We learned a lot together.

We formed a bond where I felt we were communicating on a level all our own. Obedience has been one of the most rewardingthings I have ever done. We have taught basic obedience to all of our dogs, including the 14 year old; who had no problemlearning, by-the-way. She loves the attention and those special goodies. We make it a game where the dog is the center ofattention doing something the know pleases us and in the end, pleases them. In fact they all beg to be the next one to "do theirthing:.

Sum of the Parts

If you have never tried obedience, it is well worth the time. It certainly gives you a different perspective on dogs, and LhasaApsos in particular. I know I appreciate the uniqueness of each of our dogs. No two work exactly the same. In the end, the joyis doing it together that makes you both happy. If it turns into a chore, you -- as the leader --are doing something wrong. Lhasasare so smart and devoted, that you will appreciate even more their wonderful heritage.

Karen L. Nichols

What to expect when anAKC inspector comes toyour door.

Most breeders would prefer not tohave to deal with an AKC inspector. For some, it's the anticipation of theunknown that instills anxiety; forothers it's a fear of the aftermath. Butwhat do AKC inspectors actually dowhen they come knocking?

First, kennel inspections are routine events that do not targetspecific groups or individuals. Before 1991 inspections wereconducted after complaints were received by the AKC, but noweveryone using the AKC's registry service is subject to inspection. The system, which was once called "reactive," is now termed"proactive," meaning inspectors are visiting the kennels of allindividuals registering dogs with the AKC to determine if they are incompliance with the AKC's rules and regulations on record keepingand identification.

Although the department's inspections policies have not changedsince 1957, the number of kennels inspected has increasedtremendously over the last five years, according to InvestigatorDonald Sturz. "Now we often return for routine inspections within ayear or two of the last inspection," he says.

Why would the AKC want to inspect your kennel? The primaryreason is to protect the integrity of the AKC registry. By checkingactual breeding stock against the corresponding paperwork, the AKCcan verify the purity of the stock, thus helping to safeguard theregistry. To accomplish this, all breeders must maintain their recordsin compliance with AKC requirements, so that anyone inspecting akennel can correctly identify their dogs without assistance.

Says AKC's newly appointed Director of Investigations andInspections, William R Hughes, "One of our goals is to keep the StudBook as pure as possible. We're here to help the breeder."

It is also the AKC's objective to make sure all dogs in kennelsare housed properly and receive good care. High standards in kennelmaintenance are particularly important in this time of anti-breederlegislation. The proper maintenance of kennels will help responsiblebreeders continue to maintain kennels without legal restrictions.

The AKC Investigations are Inspections department has its homeoffice in New York Hughes oversees a department consisting of twoinvestigators—Sturz and Robert Hufford—and a team of AKCinspectors who are stationed throughout the country. Theinvestigators are given specific assignments based on complaintsabout a given kennel or individual, while the inspectors conductroutine inspections.

What Happens In An InspectionWhen an inspector visits a kennel, they will first introduce

thernself and present their AKC identification. They will then explainthat they are conducting a routine inspection of the record-keepingand identification procedures and that they're determining compliancewith the AKC's rules and regulations. The inspector will begin byasking the kennel owner or manager basic questions regarding thekennel's size and operation.

A routine inspection can last from 30 minutes to two hours, according to Sturz; an in-dept inspection (usually a reinspection) canexceed three hours. After the basic questions are answered, theinspector will accompany the kennel owner on a tour of the kennel. This walk-through helps the inspector determine the approximate sizeof the kennel, the number of breeds and the identification on the dogs. The inspector will also note the care and condition of the dogs and thefacilities.

Identification requirements are as follows:

• Each dog in a kennel must have its own unique identifier.• The identification must be on the actual dog. Photo, drawings,

nose prints, names on crates or a kennel owner's knowledge ofhis dogs are not acceptable.

• Tags, tattoos or a microchip implant are all acceptable forms ofidentification. If a microchip is used, there must be an on-sitescanner to verify identification.

• The identification on the dog must correspond to the kennelowner's written record of that dog, so there is no question as towhich AKC papers and records go with a particular dog.

During the walk-through an inspector will want to see that bitches inseason are maintained separately from the males, so that no doubtexists as to the identity of a sire of any litter. Puppies from differentlitters must be segregated or identified, so there can be no doubt as tothe parents or age of a particular puppy.

Throughout the walk-through, the inspector will randomly selectdogs and ask to see their identification. If a kennel maintains morethan one breed, the inspector will select a random number from eachof the breeds represented. All information collected by the inspectorwill later be checked against the kennel owner's records to determineits accuracy.

Keeping Good Recordshi addition to being accurate and well-maintained, it is important

that all kennel records be understood by anyone readingthem—without the kennel owner's assistance. This provides areference for registration or transfer applications that have been madeor that may be made later to the AKC. Also, the lineage of allpurebred dogs can be immediately determined upon inspection.

The AKC provides forms for keeping written records thatinclude spaces for all the necessary information. Kennel owners candevise their own systems, but they must include all the informationrequired in the AKC's forms. According to Hughes, "A significantnumber of breeders are adopting AKC forms for their record keepingbecause it's the easiest way to make sure all the information is there."The forms can be ordered from the Customer Service department at(919) 233-9767, and may be photocopied as needed.

Records must be kept whenever a dog is acquired or delivered, and at the time of mating, whelping or death. Records on each dogshould be saved for five years if a dog has died, is sold or given away,in case questions arise as to the lineage of puppies from that dog.

There are several types of records inspectors look at: ownershiprecords, breeding records, litter records and records of dogs acquiredfrom others for resale. The records should contain the followinginformation.• Ownership records, including the dog's breed; registered name

and number (or litter registration number if not individuallyregistered yet); sex: color and markings; date of birth; names andnumbers of sire and dam; name of breeder, name and address ofperson from whom directly acquired; date of acquisition; datedog is sold, given away or dies; name and address of person towhom the dog is directly sold or delivered; kind of papers anddate supplied. You need these records for dogs you co-own, aswell.

• Breeding records, including date of mating; names of personshandling mating; registered name and number of dog to whommated; name and address of its owner.

• Litter records, which chronicle date of whelping; number ofpuppies whelped; sex, color and markings; litter registrationnumber; date of sale, gift or death of each puppy; name andaddress of person acquiring each puppy; kind of papers and datesupplied; registered name and number of each puppy registeredby breeder.Records on dogs acquired from others for resale. This type ofrecord usually applies to dog brokers and petshops; however, italso applies to individuals getting a puppy back or who have astud dog puppy agreement. The AKC provides a form thatrequires the same information as the litter form, in addition to thename of address of the person from whom the dog was acquired.

Rectifying A ProblemFollowing an inspection, the inspector will discuss any problems

with the kennel owner and provide a written report stating the natureof the problems that need rectifying. If an inspector should find akennel does not comply with the proper record keeping andidentification rules, he or she will notify the AKC's New York office, which will send a warning letter to the kennel owner. The owner thenhas a specified time during which they must rectify the problems.

Within that time period the owner must request a reinspection inwriting. When the inspector returns to the kennel for a reinspection,if the owner still does not comply, then their right to continue usingAKC registration services will be reconsidered by the AKC'sPrivileges Committee.

There are other, more immediate actions an inspector mayrecommend. The final decision on these is made by the PrivilegesCommittee. Generally, they are reserved for more serious infractions.

AKC inspectors never seize dogs or issue fines to kennel owners. However, the Board of Directors may elect to levy fines. If aninspector should find the conditions in the kennel are cruel, inhumaneor unsanitary, they will notify the AKC, which will contact the USDAand animal control offices in the kennel's region. If the kennel isconvicted of cruelty, its AKC registration privileges will besuspended by the AKC Board of Directors.

The USDA also conducts kennel inspections, and has its ownrules about the conditions under which dogs may be kept in a kennel.Unlike the AKC, the USDA can issue or revoke a kennel's license tooperate. It can also file charges against a kennel.

For the most part, the inspections process is a friendly interactionbetween inspector and kennel owner. Says Hughes, "When we firstget there people are usually guarded and defensive, but once weexplain what we're there to do, most people become morecooperative. We're not looking for this to be a punitive process. Wewant it to be educational."

If you have questions regarding the inspections process, call(212) 696-8377 or write to the Investigations and InspectionsDepartment, 51 Madison Avenue, New York, NY 10010. To ordera booklet of AKC record keeping forms, A User's Guide to AKCRules for Record Keeping and identification (free) or the DogRecord Book ($5), call Customer Service at (919) 233-9767.

Thernoriei

I have been asked to write about four friends we havelost in the last seven months. Perhaps you will indulgeme as I wander through my memories and share mymuses of each of these dedicated Lhasa Apso people.

Raena Wilks, an ALAC member since 1961, died inJuly 1993. She loved the breed with a passion andserved the club in many ways. She was the coordinatorof our annual meeting and awards banquet when theywere held in New York City at Westminster time.A resident of the Big Apple, Raena masterminded

these wonderful parties. I have very fond memories ofthe camaraderie we all shared because of our hostess'graciousness. Raena did not drive but relied on friendsto transport her to the shows; therefore, it was a greatdisappointment to her when the annual functions weremoved to be held in conjunctions with the annual rovingspecialty.

Raena also served as the ALAC's membership chair.Typically, she rallied around charter officer DorothyBenitez when Dorothy was destitute and dying of cancerby establishing the Dorothy Benitez Assistance Fund tohelp her. She later continued it to honor Dorothy andprovide help to other members in need. In July the boardof directors changed the name to the Benitez-WilksFund in honor of both ladies. We lost two world-renowned Lhasa ladies in

November 1993, Patricia Chenoweth and FrancesSefton. Chen Lhasa Apsos started in 1959. For 34 yearsPat lived with her Lhasa Apsos as companions first, butas a breeder never lost sight of her responsibility tobreed type. Even when the kennel in Saratoga burnedand many of her top-winning and top-producing dogsand a lifetime of records were lost in 1984, she seemedto gather strength from the dogs that survived and theconcern of friends. With this strength the Chenowethsregrouped and, although on a smaller basis, continuedtheir commitment to the breed until her death. When I conjure up memories of Pat, I remember

fondly her arrival at dog shows. She would drive up withseveral Lhasa Apsos happily running loose in the car, delighted to be at the show with "Mom." She wasalways prepared. I remember one Westminster when theALAC sponsored a membership drive in the benchingarea. When it came time to put up the display, none ofthe East Coast people had any tools but Pat had scissors, tacks, a stapler and even poster board, which she had

brought all the way from California along with severaldogs and all their necessities.

Pat enjoyed sharing the antics of her dogs by writingstories about them such as "Panda Bear Tree," many ofwhich were published in various magazines. She and herhusband Thomas wrote the first book about LhasaApsos, How to Raise and Train Your Lhasa Apso, published in 1965 by T.F.H.

Pat, an ALAC member since 1970, served us in manyways over the years, most recently as author of thiscolumn.

Within 36 hours after hearing about Pat, I wasnotified that our Lhasa Apso friend and ALAC memberfrom Australia, Frances Sefton, had lost her battle withcancer.

The author of the second Lhasa Apso book, TheLhasa Apso, published in 1970, Frances is universallyrecognized as an authority on the breed. She judged inthis country in 1989 and we were honored to have thisauthority in our midst.

Frances' Cheska Lhasa Apsos were successful both inGreat Britain, where her breeding program originated, and later down under after the Seftons emigrated toAustralia.

In January 1994 we lost Robert E. Schrank, Jr., afteran extended illness. Bob' courage commanded love andrespect from all who knew him. He had been an ALACmember since 1989, and although he was not as deeplyinvolved for as long as the others, he truly loved thebreed.

Bob's naivete allowed him to see beyond the trivialand straight ahead to the heart. I remember how pleasedhe was with his first winner and the first puppies shehad. It was such fun to see his newfound enjoyment. Hewas good for the breed. We will miss these friends, but they are not gone. All

we have to do is look into the faces of our Lhasas to seethe contributions these friends made on their behalf orcall on our memories, and the happy times spent without friends are there to be enjoyed again. Thank youGod for the blessing of having known Raena, Pat,Frances, and Bob and for the blessing of memory thatallows us to enjoy our friends forever.

1994 ALAC SPECIALTY TAPES

We will be taping the ALAC LHASA APSO SPECIALTY show that will be held on June 15th in SanFrancisco, California. This year's Specialty Judge is the noted Breeder-Judge Mrs. Marianne Nixon. TheGrand Futurity judge will be Beverly Drake.

We will be taping , this year only the ALAC specialty and the Grand Futurity. There will be no taping of theSweeps, Obedience or the LACNC Specialty. Taping a National Specialty is a very grueling task and weare therefore limiting our taping this year to the last three days.

We anticipate that there will be a total of 3 tapes for the show. We are providing complete sets of the ALACshow for the same $60 price as last year. The tapes will be Grand Futurity & Dog classes for Tape 1, Bitchesfor Tape 2 and Specials, Best of Breed, Brace, Hall of Fame & Stud & Brood Bitch competion on Tape 3.Individual tapes are still $ 25.00 each plus postage.

As usual we will have a complete commentary for every dog in the ring. Commentary is provided by wellknown Lhasa exhibitors.

SPECIAL NOTICE: As in past years we will be donating 10% of the gross sales of the ALACSpecialty tape sales for the 1995 Trophy Fund.

You can order individual or tape set today by filling in the coupon below. Please enclose your check or chargeyour VISA , MASTERCARD or AMEX. For ADVANCE orders there will be no charge for shipping. AfterJune 15th include postage of $3.00 for one tape, or $4.00 for two tapes and $5.00 for three tapes. Since acomplete set takes 6 hours to reproduce, orders will be filled on the basis of the earliest orders recieved. Pleaseallow at least one week for delivery. All tapes will be sent U.S. Priority Mail.
