ADASI to sponsor UMEX 2015

The current IDEX which opens its doors this morning will be the “most impressive yet”, according to

IDEX CEO Saleh Almarzooqi (pictured).“Drawing on over 20 years experience, IDEX is widely recognised as the foremost showcase of the very latest technology, insight and innovation that currently defines the modern defence industry,” he says.“This is in large part due to the introduction of NAVADEX in 2011 - the region’s largest maritime defence exhibition but also as a result of the unwavering support and enthusiasm received by its exhibitors and visitors year after year.”IDEX, which has been held every other year for two decades, now includes NAVDEX and UMEX, an unmanned systems exhibition. This year’s IDEX runs until February 26. It is held under the patronage of Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE.Exhibition space at IDEX was sold out three months ago. Almarzooqi says global interest in the Abu Dhabi event has “outreached expectation” with 90 per cent

of available exhibition space selling out as early as January 2014.From the opportunity to engage with industry leaders at the very highest level, to showcasing your products and services to a captured international audience, having a presence at IDEX 2015 is “simply a must for individuals, companies and governments who operate in this space”, says Almarzooqi.“Quite distinct from other events of its kind, our show is a real differentiator.”Close to 1,200 local and international exhibitors are attending IDEX’s indoor and outdoor activities with 59 countries taking part and 42 national pavilions. Eighteen countries are taking space for the first time.NAVDEX has more than 90 local and international exhibitors. In addition to UAE Navy ships there are vessels visiting from Saudi Arabia, France, Italy, Pakistan, UK and US. Total naval defence spending in the Arabian Gulf and western Indian Ocean is expected to reach US$76.4 billion between 2010 and 2019, IDEX said in a statement.

IDEX is taking place as Middle Eastern countries’ defence spending is expected to rocket to $920 billion between 2014 and 2020, according to the consultancy IHS Jane’s Aerospace, Defence and Security.Growth in the defence budgets of GCC countries has been high over recent years, and now accounts for about 83 per cent of overall military spending in the Middle East, according to IHS Jane’s annual defence budgets review. Spending on defence across the Mena region in 2013 grew by 12.1 per cent to $120.6bn, making it the fastest-growing region in percentage terms in the world.

The E-2D Advanced Hawkeye is the United States Navy’s only designed, tested and in-

production airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) aircraft. Built specifically to fly the AEW&C mission, it serves as the key aircraft to sweep ahead of the strike and ensure battle group protection. With its signature roto dome and vertical tails, the E-2D Advanced Hawkeye provides unprecedented, 360-degree surveillance to the warfighter. Thanks to the E-2D’s new and extremely advanced radar, the system can detect smaller targets at longer ranges over water, shore and land environments – even when densely cluttered.Just one system delivers battle management, air and missile defense, and numerous sensor capabilities to aid in complete international and domestic security. In June 2014, the E-2D reached a major milestone when the U.S. Navy awarded Northrop Grumman Corporation a $3.6 billion multi-year contract to deliver 25 new E-2D Advanced Hawkeye aircraft. In October 2014, U.S. Navy declared that E-2D achieved Initial Operational Capability (IOC). ‘IOC’ signifies that the first operational squadron, Carrier Airborne Early Warning Squadron (VAW) 125, is ready to start deployment preparations with E-2D aircraft. E-2D will deploy in 2015.

E-2C Hawkeyes, the predecessor to E-2D, are operating around the world. There are E-2s in France, Egypt, Taiwan and Japan. The U.S. Navy is currently operating E-2Cs in the 5th fleet, supporting strike operations against Iraq and Syria, and working alongside systems from other nations in the fight against extremists. In November 2014, the Japanese Ministry of Defense announced that it would procure the E-2D Advanced Hawkeye for its intelligence-gathering needs. As other countries acquire the E-2D, the interoperability with U.S. forces will result in military and operational advantages, as well as modernization and sustainment dividends.Having a common system shared across allies means that commanders from both forces have an intimate understanding of system capabilities, which makes for better, more effective joint operations. The E-2D is highly flexible as it can take off and land on short strips, and can be used for military efforts, as well as environmental, humanitarian and other less traditional security missions. The Hawkeye can support search and rescue and drug interdiction efforts, and has assisted humanitarian relief missions after natural disasters such as the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami in Japan, and Typhoon Haiyan in 2013.

Northrop Grumman’s Scalable Agile Beam Radar, or SABR, is the latest in advanced Active

Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radars, designed specifically as an affordable and simple retrofit for Lockheed Martin’sF-16 Fighting Falcon aircraft. Designed in 2006, first flown in 2008 and demonstrated on a U.S. Air Force F-16 in 2009, SABR was competitively selected by Lockheed Martin for U.S. Air Force and Taiwan F-16 radar modernization programs in 2013.

SABR has since followed an accelerated development schedule, accomplishing all five major design milestones in the first 12 months after selection. Due to the very high maturity of the SABR radar, Northrop Grumman delivered the first engineering and manufacturing design (EMD) system to Lockheed Martin in December 2014. EMD systems are identical to future production systems, and the APG-83 will be an “off-the-shelf” radar in 2017. SABR provides exceptional air-to-air and air-to-surface radar performance,

The need for a strong air and missile defense system has proven itself time and

time again. In the current global environment it is a necessity for the safety of nations around the world. Lockheed Martin’s ‘Hit-to-Kill’ (HTK) technology offers one of the most comprehensive, accurate and powerful solutions, destroying a potential threat with body-to-body impact by the interceptor missile, keeping them away from protected areas when it matters most. The HTK system approaches incoming threats in a three-tiered approach.

Sensing the threatEmploying a ground-based defense system which detects and precisely locates the danger, the HTK system estimates an intercept point for any incoming threat, and launches the interceptor missile. Onboard radar seeker systems then search for and acquires its precise location by searching, scanning and processing the location data en route further enhancing missile precision.Simultaneously, the onboard radar measures critical target information that is then used by the interceptor’s guidance system to pinpoint where to aim on the target’s body.

Getting to the threat To ensure maximum impact, the interceptor itself is also very agile and maneuverable with rapid steering control an essential part of its system. Lockheed Martin’s PAC-3 Missile achieves in-flight control by utilizing its solid propellant rocket motor, aerodynamic surfaces, attitude control motors (ACMs) and inertial guidance. The key component to PAC-3’s agility is its 180 ACMs, which are small, short-duration rocket motors near the nose of the missile, provide the requisite agility to refine the missile’s course at the endgame segments of flight.

Stopping the threatAs the missile intercepts the threat, it destroys the target

through body-to-body impact, akin to a bullet hitting a bullet in mid-air. The body-to-body impact has extremely high kinetic energy, protecting the defended area from debris.

A defining advantagePrevious air and missile defense interceptors did not have the sensing or agility components required for HTK, and instead relied on fragmentation warhead technology. This method attempts to disable or deflect the threat off course - this is not as accurate and can result in dangerous debris falling close to the protected area. Several Lockheed Martin interceptors can also achieve HTK at higher altitudes and ranges, which is important when defending against weapons of mass destruction. The Lockheed Martin missile defense system provides a layered approach to missile defense to ensure the protected area is safe from incoming threats. PAC-3, PAC-3 Missile Segment Enhancement (MSE) and Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) are all HTK and provide the ability to intercept threats at multiple altitudes, ranges and speeds. HTK technology makes sure that any threat, large or small stays safely far away from home.

UNPARALLELED CAPABILITIESThe ‘Hit-to-Kil l system from Lockheed Martin puts defensive power and accuracy in focus

The most crucial challenges to military missions are often not the capabilities

of the enemy but rather the limitations imposed on military equipment by unforgiving landscapes and environments. The Enhanced Situational Awareness (ESA) camera system from DRS Technologies, a Finmeccanica company, overcomes that potential danger. The company’s ESA system arms drivers of large combat vehicles with close to a 360-degree view of their surroundings, providing an unparalleled advantage in the interest of safety and mission success.By means of a unit known as a Driver’s Vision Enhancer Wide (DVE Wide) module containing three infrared cameras, the system provides a 107- by 30-degree visual field through the windshield, affording a clear view of the road ahead and the edges on both sides. Meanwhile, wheel-track displays with 40- by 30-degree fields of view from the sides of a vehicle allow drivers to determine the best way to maneuver in confined spaces and around obstacles.A camera facing backward allows a driver to safely reverse a vehicle and a commander to deploy troops confidently from the rear. With the ESA system, troops never need to leave the

safety of the vehicle and guide it out of a tight or dangerous spot. The DRS technology is designed to be custom-tailored economically to vehicle and mission. A basic Driver’s Vision Enhancer system can be upgraded easily to an ESA system because of its simple drop-in replacement design. External cameras can be added or removed, permitting users to adapt the vehicle to changing mission requirements. DVE Wide is the next generation of vision enhancement and built with an advanced uncooled thermal imaging system. Sensors electronically “stitch” together the images from the three side-by-side thermal imaging modules to produce a seamless front view, dramatically improving the field of view.

Using this system, the driver can pan through the full 107 degrees to see the road edges on each side or to favor one side of the road that may be particularly challenging, such as the drop-off of a mountain pass. This greatly increases crew safety while negotiating challenging terrain. Additionally, the system displays wheel track indicators that define the width of the vehicle. These tracks give the driver a reference to the location of the vehicle. They also allow the driver to determine the best way to maneuver the vehicle in confines spaces or hazardous areas where vehicle rollovers are prevalent. The ESA system increases survivability, mobility, force protection and safety to turn situational awareness into situational advantage.

Russian arms exporter Rosoboronexport, with its vast experience in army vehicle

development and operation has revealed its family of Typhoon-K mine-resistant ambush- protected (MRAP) vehicles for the global market. Manufactured by its Special Vehicles Plant, this family is made up of two different variants of 6x6 vehicles with modular (Typhoon-63968) and case (Typhoon-63969) chassis – as well as the bonneted 4x4 Typhoon-53949. Taking an innovative approach to protection, ergonomics and equipment, these vehicles are developed around a single automobile platform and have impressive reliability, agility and cross-country capabilities.

Operating with new generation diesel engines with capacity of 450 hp (340 hp in Typhoon-53949) and automatic six-speed hydro mechanical transmission systems, these vehicles can achieve speeds of over 100 km/h while maintaining an impressive fuel range of at least 1,000 km. The vehicles are also capable of crossing fords up 1.75 meters deep without preliminary preparations and climbing a slope of 30 degrees.

Comfort, safety and versatilityThe Typhoon-K MRAP family utilizes a variable hydro-pneumatic suspension system. This ensures high ride comfort while enabling the operator to either automatically or forcibly alter the suspension stiffness characteristics, or vary ground clearance and body position relative to the road surface. All of the models in the Typhoon-K family are equipped with on-board information and control system, centralized tire inflation system, bullet-resistant tires, all-round video observation system, automatic fire-extinguishing system, and self-contained diesel power pack. In addition, remotely operated stabilized weapon stations can be installed.

The armament mix varies depending on customer requirements and its versatile configuration can be tailored to specific equipment needs. Ease of use is also enhanced with the inclusion of a folding ramp at the stern of the hull for quick and easy boarding and dismounting of troops. has been complemented by new design approaches and the most advanced technology to ensure protection against the most lethal threats.

Blast protectionWhile versatile in performance, the ballistic protection of all vehicles in the family corresponds to Level 3 NATO STANAG 4569 and can be enhanced to Level 4. Protection is provided by composite armor, including an armored hull and additional ceramic armor plates, as well as by streamlined hull design and removable anti-mine pallets which sees the 19-seat 6x6 Typhoon-63968 and its 12-seat Typhoon-63969 sibling capable of withstanding an 8 kg TNT blast under any wheel and anywhere under the hull. The 10-man 4x4 Typhoon-53949 is similarly resilient with a 6 kg blast resistance.

Troop seats have a harness system attached to the roof, absorbing mine blast energy. Internal spall liners and special add-on mats improve protection against anti-tank grenade launchers. Preliminary live fire and blast testing of these vehicles conducted by the manufacturer using the Hybrid III male dummies, equipped with 37 various sensors, has revealed that the loads experienced by the human inside the vehicle do not exceed the permissible level and has confirmed a high protection level.

For the first time, TDW, the European market leader in warhead systems is exhibiting at IDEX. TDW is

a technology and innovation leader in warhead systems for guided weapons. In 2013, the subsidiary of the missile systems company MBDA Germany was the first company in the world to successfully complete trials in the verification and demonstration of a new technology, which provides scalable and target-adapted effectiveness.Military operations in asymmetric conflict situations call for high precision and for a warhead terminal effect that is specifically adapted to the target. Today’s warhead systems do not meet this requirement or they do so only to a limited extent. There is a requirement for a system that offers a terminal effect which can be adjusted in its nature and extent to be able to deploy the appropriate effects on any given target and operational area. For several years, TDW has been working on identifying technical solutions to solve this issue. Engineers at TDW have now

developed a new effector technology with which armed forces can achieve scalable target-adapted effectiveness. With this kind of flexible system, armed forces are able to minimize unintended damage while maintaining high effectiveness on the target. TDW has already demonstrated that this technology works reliably in realistic environments. This success represents an important step towards more flexible, modern warhead systems for future missiles. Flexible response warhead systems do not only include scalable warheads (Dial-a-

Yield) that can be deployed in a graduated and target-adjusted manner in urban terrain when avoiding collateral damage. Switchable Mode (Dial-a-Mode), Aimable (Dial-a-Direction) and Multi-Effects or Special (Dial-an-Effect) warheads are also included in the catalogue of this future technology.TDW’s warhead systems vitally contribute to the performance of a large variety of advanced weapon systems – for example guided weapons such as Meteor, Brimstone 2, TAURUS KEPD 350, RBS15Mk-3 and Sting Ray.

... continued from page 1He said the 12th edition of IDEX - organised under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE and Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces – has highly significant strategic importance. “It opens channels of communication and facilitates the exchange of civil and technical expertise between government departments, institutions, private companies and armed forces in countries around the world.” He said this was the aim of IDEX and as well as ensuring its future success, noting the Abu Dhabi defence showcase is the only defence exhibition in the Middle East and North Africa. Major General Al Hashimi said deals this year are expected to eclipse the previous IDEX. “As for the value of deals this year, we are expecting it to exceed the value achieved in the last edition of the exhibition, which amounted to 14.1 billion dirhams across 55 transactions.”Major General Al Hashimi said that during the past 22 years the number of exhibitors has increased by more than 200 per

cent - from 350 companies in 1993 to about 1,200 companies today. The proportion of international representation at the exhibition also increased during the same period by 129 per cent, from 24 countries up to 55 countries. Attendance increased by 130 per cent with visitors to the last IDEX reaching about 80,000. IDEX is also hosting the first Unmanned Systems Exhibition and Conference (UMEX). The lastest unmanned systems technology will be showcased, particularly unmanned aircraft. “This has prompted about 33 local and global leading companies to participate in UMEX, including Abu Dhabi Autonomous Systems Investment Company, INSITU, a subsidiary of the Boeing Company, Denel and Shenzhen and other leading companies,” said Major General Al Hishimi. This reflects the growing regional role of the United Arab Emirates, and the strategic importance of its armed forces in dealing with the latest defence technologies, he added.

To say that CAE is pre-eminent in aviation simulation and training in all its shapes, sizes and forms is

like saying elephants are big. It is almost a redundant statement. The company’s heritage, however, encompasses all aspects of modelling, simulation and training in other domains too, including land, sea, public safety, and healthcare. Its solutions at work in Canada, the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, and Brunei, to name just a few customer nations using CAE’s simulation-based systems in non-aviation applications, are testimony to the full-spectrum nature of the company’s product and service provision in all domains. Make no mistake, however. This so-called ‘expansion’ is not a new phenomenon. CAE has been in the business of leveraging its core modelling and simulation capabilities and applying them to sophisticated training solutions for decades. One example is in the area of constructive simulation for command and staff training. As long ago as 1994, CAE began to develop a constructive simulation tool to meet a German Army requirement to provide effective decision-making training from the platoon to divisional command level. The system, known as GESI (the abbreviation for Gefechts-Simulation System, German for combat simulation system), is in Bundeswehr service under the designation SIRA. One of the main locations using GESI/SIRA as a leadership skills development tool is the German Army Officer School in Dresden, where it is one of the principal teaching tools available to staff. At the school, students make significant use of GESI as they learn – and practice – command and leadership skills at various levels of authority. The systems’ engaging and focused synthetic environment offers students an effective training tool, which students readily acknowledge is a major component of

how they learn to become young officers.GESI’s flexibility is one of the reasons it has attracted other users to invest in a system originally designed for the German Army. Following Germany, other countries such as Austria, Finland, Norway, Ireland, Italy and most recently Poland (where GESI has recently been installed in the Wroclaw Military Academy) have all become satisfied and convinced users of the constructive simulation system. A consequence of the increase in the customer base for CAE’s GESI has been continual development of the core system. Germany’s initiative in using the system to train students at the Academy for Crisis Management, for example, has been echoed by CAE’s development of GESI for a range of applications, such as operations-other-than-war and emergency management.Another recent development for CAE’s GESI has been its integration with Rolands& Associates Joint Theatre-Level Simulation (JTLS) to create the GlobalSim constructive simulation solution. At IDEX, CAE will demonstrate GESI

and discuss how the comprehensive GlobalSim solution can be used for joint training and wargamingtohelp commanders and all levels of staff prepare for a range of operational scenarios. JTLS is an interactive, wargaming system that models air, tactical aviation support, ground combined arms and naval operations activities. JTLS is a mature and proven constructive simulation that is optimized for use at the strategic and operational levels. The CAE GESI system is used to represent a virtual battlefield, including weapons, vehicles, aircrafts, ground forces and more. Combining JTLS and GESI brings together operational and tactical level constructive simulations to prepare commanders and staff to make timely, informed and intelligent decisions across the full spectrum of operations, including conventional combat, disaster relief, and operations other than war.You can see a demonstration of constructive simulation at CAE’s booth (Hall 1, Booth B60) during IDEX 2015.
