    Nitech NRU Technology

    Enhanced Oil RecoveryBoth nitrogen and re oods are used in order to

    enhance oil recovery. The basic dierence is a reood injects air while a nitrogen ood injects near

    pure nitrogen.

    A typical gas content in a ood has;

    a variable inlet nitrogen content;

    an increase of nitrogen content over timeas eld matures.

    Our answer:

    The Nitech NRU process is able to take on these

    variables and escalations, without the need for

    equipment modications.

    Also normal for these facilities is;

    an integrated NGL extraction is arequirement;

    The process gas will be associated withoil/condensate production, therefore willcontain high levels of C3+ hydrocarbons.

    Our answer:

    Nitech process can integrate NGL extraction with

    high ethane recovery

    Our history with ood applications;

    3 NRUs associated with nitrogenoods;

    1 NRU associated with a re ood.

    PROJECT DESCRIPTION

    In Southwestern North Dakota, producers areinjecting air into oil producing reservoirs in order toincrease the temperature in the reservoir and todecrease the viscosity of the crude oil. In addition,the reservoir pressure is increased facilitatingincreased production. We employed a provenprocess designed to remove residual amounts ofoxygen coming from the reservoir that had nottaken part in the combustion process. In addition,there was a signicant amount of carbon dioxideand nitrogen generated by the air ood process.Our process is designed for a wide range of nitro-

    gen since the air injection process is on-going andthe nitrogen content is increasing. This facilityutilizes the newest generation Nitech internalcondenser that provides a cleaner nitrogen ventrelative to methane losses. Another feature of thisfacility was to design with small footprints since thefacility is installed in process buildings as requiredto protect the facility from the harsh and coldwinter environment with normal temperaturesreaching from -29 to -40 degrees C. Carbon dioxideremoval is brought about by the use of conven-tional amine and reduces the carbon dioxidecontent feeding the NRU from approximately 8 PPMto approximately 10 PPM. The oxygen removalsystem was designed to remove oxygen content toas low as 1 PPM. Nitrogen is removed from near60% down to the specied level of approximately10% to be used for both sales and eld fuel gas. TheNitech NRU also includes integrated NGL extrac-tion. The facility also fractionations the liquids toproduce an HD-5 grade propane for the localmarket.

    Nitech NRU Technology

    Conventional low-BTU Gas

    Low Inlet Nitrogen Content Gas Streams

    Historically, solutions for gas streams that werejust out of pipeline specication with regard tonitrogen content (3-10% nitrogen) included: Pay a penalty for o-spec gas; Blend gas to spec, if blend gas is

    available; If associated with an NGL extraction

    facility, ethane may be blended withsales gas to meet the inert

    specication.

    Today, we deliver economic solutions forprocessing low nitrogen gas streams: As a stand-alone system behind the

    expander plant; As an integrated part of the existing

    expander plant.

    PROJECT DESCRIPTION

    An existing facility with NGL and condensateextraction, the Nitech NRU is located in Paden,

    OK, USA. For this particular facility, condensate,NGL, carbon dioxide and water are removedupstream of the NRU. In November, 2006, a Nitech NRU to remove nitrogen from a slip stream offacility gas has been designed and constructed.

    Implementing the Nitech NRU design allowedthe client to more economically market their natu-ral gas product. The Paden NRU utilizes the Nitech NRU technology in order to reduce the nitrogenlevels below the pipeline requirements. The facility

    was designed to process a portion of the totalvolume of available higher nitrogen gas to lessthan 1.0 mole % nitrogen, then blending this lownitrogen stream with the remaining higher nitro-gen gas that bypasses the NRU. The total blndedstream meets the pipeline specication of 3.0mole % nitrogen. By bypassing a substantialamount of gas, the capital cost and operatingcosts were reduced. Additional equipmentpurchased and installed included an amine unitand associated compression. BCCK assisted theclient with specication of the amine unit and

    compressors. NG Resources completed the fabri-cation of the NRU cold boxes. The NRU wasinstalled at the Paden Facility by a third partyconstruction company and continues to operatetoday.

    overall E&P costs relatively higher. But the gas price

    in regions such as Europe are higher, which makesto overall investment still attractive (also royaltiesare included).

    Developments with Nitech NRUToday, we are working with an oil and gas companyon one of the rst tight gas exploration project inPoland, which is the rst unconventional gasexploration facility to become active in Europe. Weare condent this project will be the rst of manyunconventional gas processing projects inEurope.

    Key Figures:

    Unconventional GasThe unconventional gas, after exploration, may

    have gas processing needs to meet pipelinequality, safety, and environmental specica-tions. At this moment, there is too little aware-ness on the market on the advanced NRU gasprocessing technologies availiable at the globallevel.

    Global Development

    Global reserves on unconventional are tremendous.Furthermore, there is a wide distribution of uncon-

    ventional resources.in trillion cubic meters (TCM)

    In gas-exporting regions such as the former SovietUnion and the Middle East, unconventionalresources will not displace, but might complementconventional gas production.

    In gas-importing regions such as Europe and Asia,unconventional gas become interesting ascurrently most gas is imported (also might reduceimport needs).

    The permeability in regions such as Europe and Asiais much lower to the other regions, which makes
