translated in 1974 by Gia-Fu Feng with Frank R. Kegan

Here is the Gia-Fu Text of the Taoist translation of the I Ching we completed in thesummer of 1974 with also the Flux Tome names for the hexagrams.

The hexagrams are listed by number, Gia-Fu hexagram name, Flux Tome hexagramname.

The overall hexagram judgment and the Image are given as line 0 (the whole of

hexagram). Then the individual line judgments and the line slogans for each

hexagram line follow with the hexagram number and line number first.

heaven. The earthy is deep taking care of all things. Uniting with the creative virtue

without limit: like the shining light reaching far, blessing all things. The mare is of theland, traveling the globe without bound, gentle, pliable, fruitful and zestful: this is how

the Master acts. At the first astray: he has lost the Tao: later on the right track, back to the

rhythm: in the Southwest he gains friends, walking with the right people: in the Northeasthe leaves friends, in the end he will have occaision for celebration. The luck of peace and

zest fulfilled boundlessly. The earthy is the power of the land. The master supports

myriad things with benevolent virtue. Home Land.

Ignorance is bliss because it is timely to be blissful. The search of the ignorant kid is proper therefore the first oracle answers him; asking three times means distractiontherefore he receives nothing. Distraction is ignorance. To enlighten ignorance with

rectitude makes one a sage. Young spring at the foot of a mountain. Ignorance. Themaster is decisive in action and strenghthens his virtue. Ignorance.

Yank up grass is to respond to people without.

0 whole of Humility HUMILITY. BLISS. THE MASTER GETS GOOD ENDING.Humility is bliss. The Tao of heaven is to illuminate below with bright light. The Tao of

Earth is humble and raises upward. The Tao of heaven deflates the full and increases the

humble. The Tao of Earth flows from excessive into the humble. Spirits and gods harmthe fullness and bless humility. The Tao of man abhors fullness and prefers humility.

Humility is exalted and bright; in lowly position it can not be ignored. Thus the goodending of the Master. A mountain in the midst of the earth--humility. The master lessens

the excess and increases the deficient, weighs things and equalizes his distribution.Humility.

0 whole of Flowing FLOWING. FRUITFUL TO ESTABLISH ALLIANCES ANDMARCH AN ARMY. Flowing. Authority accepted and the will prevails. Flexible in

action this is flowing. Flow with the Tao and act. So does heaven and earth, how much

more so should you in establishing alliances and marching an army. Heaven and earthmove flexibly therefore the sun and moon never deviate and the four seasons perform

properly. The sage acts flexibly then penalties and punishments are clear. The people are

obedient. Great indeed is the timing and rectitude of flowing. Thunder comes resoundingout of the earth. Flowing. Ancient kings then composed music and honored virtue and

offered piously to the highest God uniting with ancestors of ancestors. Flowing.
