The founders of Giant were craftsmen and engineers. They understood their strengths. How could they make cycling more enjoyable and accessible to more people? Simple: Build better bikes.

Much has changed during Giant’s 40-year journey from being a humble manufacturing company to the world’s leading brand of high-quality bikes and gear. Materials have changed. Technologies have advanced. Bikes we never dreamed of in 1972 are now commonplace.

But through it all, Giant never strayed from that original goal. It’s still about improving the cycling experience with three guiding principles: craftsmanship, innovation and inspiration.

From day one, Giant founder King Liu believed that lighter, faster, more durable bikes could make cycling more fun and more accessible to more people. So Giant set out to change the way bikes were made. The first decade was spent refining the building processes.

Progress happened quickly. Lessons learned in those early years gave Giant its edge. Unlike most other brands, we produced our own frame materials, investing in the ability to forge and shape tubing to meet specific performance demands.

A constant hunger for progress created a culture of craftsmanship. Every bike that went out the door required dozens of experienced hands to bring it to life. Giant’s advantage became expertise.

Even as the company pushed into uncharted waters—stronger and lighter materials, more efficient production, improved quality control—reliability remained a hallmark of the brand. Riders could trust Giant.

Craftsmanship

In 1981 Giant became the first major brand to mass-produce lightweight aluminum frames. Suddenly, more people around the world could experience a ride quality that was previously limited to expensive high-end bikes. Through technology and innovation, we were advancing the bikes people rode, and the way they rode them.

In 1987 Giant followed a similar route with carbon fiber. The Cadex 980 C, constructed with carbon-fiber frame tubes and aluminum lugs, was regarded as the world’s first affordable carbon-fiber road bike. From there, the list of innovations continued.

All Giant technologies are born from collaborations between athletes, engineers and a global team of product developers. The insights and demands of cutting-edge world champions, riders who push the limits of man and machine, benefit us all. Technologies such as lightweight composites, advanced suspension systems and integrated components trickle down, sparking innovations in competition, sport and lifestyle bikes of all types.

Innovation

The most defining development at Giant over the past decade has been a newfound dedication to promoting the cycling lifestyle. From our world headquarters in Taiwan to our sales companies around the world, all the people who make Giant what it is—employees, retail partners, athletes, fans—are empowered through various programs to be ambassadors of the sport.

It starts at the top. King Liu (left) rediscovered the joy of the cycling life in his 70s, and now spends much of his time touring various nations by bike to promote cycling. His long, sometimes arduous journeys spur motivation within the Giant family, and his travels spark dialogue on the positive virtues of the cycling lifestyle.

Our team and athlete partnerships strengthen our connection to the sport. At the Olympics, the Tour de France and other major events around the world, athletes rely on Giant to give them a winning edge.

With more than 25 years’ experience in carbon fiber engineering, plus a long history of rigorous testing and development with its professional athletes, Giant leads the way in composite bicycle technology. To meet the needs of performance riders—from professionals to enthusiasts—Giant offers three grades of composite technology.

KING OF COMPOSITES

advanced sL composite technoLogy

Professional-grade frame technology used by Giant’s world champion racers. These frames are handcrafted with the most advanced materials, engineering and construction methods.

1. T-800 Carbon Fiber: This highest grade raw carbon fiber is used to create a proprietary composite frame material that is woven and processed in Giant’s own composite factory.

2. Fusion Process: Advanced SL toptubes are “grafted” to the seattube using filament winding and co-molding. This complex process involves hand weaving the two tubes together, then re-molding the area under heat and high pressure to unify the junction—resulting in a lighter, stronger junction than with traditional molding.

3. CNT Technology: Carbon Nanotube Technology refers to a microscopic polymer added to Giant’s custom-blended resin*. Acting like miniature buttresses, CNT particles strengthen the layers of composite. Frames featuring CNT are 14 percent more impact-resistant than those without it.

4. Continuous Fiber Technology: This manufacturing process allows Giant to construct the front triangle of Advanced SL bicycles* with larger, and therefore fewer, sections of composite material. With fewer pieces and junctions, the frames are up to 100 grams lighter and significantly stronger.

1 STIFF AND LIGHT Features: Formed from raw materials in Giant’s

own forging facility, ALUXX SL proprietary alloy is 30 percent stiffer than traditional 6061 series aluminum. The increased stiffness allows engineers to use less material throughout the tubes, which results in lighter frames that never sacrifice strength or durability.

BeneFit: Riders can experience lighter and stiffer frames without sacrificing strength.

2 PERFECTLY TUNED RIDE Features: Raw ALUXX SL tubesets are further

refined through a complex series of processes that increase strength (extrusion), reduce weight (butting) and optimize frame shapes (forming). Two key Giant technologies—FluidForming and press-forming—work together to eliminate gussets, improve stiffness and minimize weight.

BeneFit: With advanced tubeset manipulation, Giant can improve the overall riding characteristics of the bike, adding stability where it is needed and removing material where it is not.

3 GUSSET-FREE DESIGN Features: Many manufacturers use old-fashioned

gussets, additional pieces of material welded to the outside of tube junctions, for additional support. Giant pioneered and perfected the use of radically shaped tubesets with all the strength and stability of gusseted tubes—but no added material or welds.

BeneFit: Stronger, lighter frames with smoother lines and fewer junctions are made possible by Giant’s advanced alloy manipulation capabilities.

THE ALUXX ADVANTAGE

Giant WheelSystems are the result of a holistic effort to create the best-performing wheels for every rider in all types of conditions. The design philosophy is called System Engineered Performance. It’s an evolution in wheel design and a departure from conventional thinking.

Bicycle wheels have traditionally been viewed as an assembly of individual parts. Rims, hubs, spokes and other small parts were produced individually and then assembled to form a wheel.

That was the old way of thinking. To create Giant WheelSystems, engineers studied the ways the individual parts of a wheel affect each other. This research pushed Giant to develop wheel components that work together to deliver best-in-class performance. Every rim, spoke and hub has been designed to function as a system to improve overall performance.

1 RECTANGULAR LEVERAGE ANGLE

Features: The design and engineering

teams studied how wheels reacted under various loads: pedaling, braking and cornering. This resulted in strategic placement of the spokes at a near 90-degree angle between the hub and rim.

BeneFit: Optimizes rotational stiffness for maximum pedaling power and minimal wheel windup. The overall stiff feel of the WheelSystem also results in more direct braking response for increased traction and control.

2 OPTIMIZED ANCHOR POINT

Features: Today’s drivetrains feature

10 or more gears on the rear cassette, reducing critical space needed to maintain stiffness and strength in the rear wheel. Rethinking the spoke and hub flange on the driveside, the design team cleverly increased the driveside bracing angle nearly 2mm without affecting required gear spacing.

BeneFit: Boosts lateral stiffness for a stronger, stiffer wheel that tracks more accurately. The result is better cornering and control, especially on rough terrain.

Robert Gesink was on a routine training ride a few weeks before the 2011 World Championships when he hit some slippery cobblestones and crashed. The damage: his right femur was broken in four places. Gesink’s career, his entire future, was cast into doubt. Surgeons told him it would be weeks before he would walk again. It would be six months before he could even think about racing.

As it turns out, Gesink rode before he walked. He started on a trainer, and over the cold winter months, when he was pushing himself through the grueling rehabilitation, he set his sights on one particular goal: Mount Baldy, the brutal queen stage of the 2012 Tour of California. The last 5 miles rise 2,200 feet, straight up the peaks that loom over Los Angeles. Just how Gesink likes it.

The day came and Gesink made his move. Riding his TCR Advanced SL, he launched a solo attack. When he crossed the finish line, arms in the air, he was instantly reestablished as one of the best climbers in the pro peloton. For Robert Gesink, who wanted it so badly that he rode before he walked, the sky is the limit.

HERE’S HOW THE DESIGN BENEFiTS ALL ROAD RIDERS:

LIGHTER Compact Road’s most distinctive feature, the downward-sloping toptube, results in smaller front and rear triangles on the frame. Because the triangles are smaller, less material is needed. Less material equals less weight.

STIFFER Picture two triangles made from equal diameter tubing. The smaller, more compact triangle uses shorter tubes. The larger triangle requires longer tubes. It’s easy to see which is more structurally sound—the smaller triangle is stiffer, less susceptible to flexing and twisting. And on a performance road frame, stiffer is faster.

SMOOTHER With traditional geometry, builders increase stiffness by using stiffer material. That might help you sprint faster but it also makes for a less comfortable ride. With Compact Road, Giant engineers are able to design frames with just the right amount of vertical compliance. You get a smoother, more comfortable ride.

BETTER FiT Because of the sloping toptube and lower standover height, it’s easier for riders of all sizes to get the perfect fit. With greater adjustability and up to six sizes per series, even Giant’s pro athletes, who range from women who are 5 feet tall to men who stand 6-foot-5, get a perfect fit with stock-size frames.

WOMEN COMPACT ROAD SIZING

At the heart of every Giant performance road bike is a unique frame design that was originally created to give pro road racers an advantage at major events like the Tour de France. Compact Road Design, introduced in 1997, has stood the test of time, winning countless pro races over the past 15 years and setting the performance benchmark for road riders of all levels.

The concept is simple: A toptube that slopes downward from the headtube to the seattube reduces the size of the front and rear triangles.

1 OverDrive 2 Giant’s innovative oversized fork steerer tube

technology. Designed to offer unprecedented front-end steering performance, the system’s oversized headset bearings and tapered steerer tube work in harmony to provide supreme steering stiffness.

2 Integrated Seatpost As the pioneer of the integrated seatpost, Giant

continues to improve its original design with lighter weight (approximately 45 grams of weight savings, compared to a standard composite seatpost), improved aerodynamics and an even greater “tuned” forgiving ride feel. An adjustable saddle clamp offers 10 or 23 millimeters of offset for precise saddle position.

a complex series of processes that provide strength (extrusion), weight reduction (butting) and shape (forming). Two key Giant technologies—FluidForming and press forming work together to eliminate gussets, improve stiffness and minimize any extra weight.

In a cycling discipline where you must expect the unexpected, where conditions range from autumn heat to sub-zero winter temperatures, and where tires rip across road, dirt, sand and snow, consistency seems nearly impossible.

In cyclocross, everything changes. One minute you’re elbowing and fighting for the inside line. The next you’re leaping over barriers, your bike on your shoulder. All this suits Lars van der Haar just fine. Ask him what courses, conditions or weather he prefers, and he shrugs and says he likes them all.

But ask Lars about his bike, and he becomes very serious. Despite his calm, unassuming nature, he has strong opinions about his racing machines. He knows exactly what he wants.

Since Lars began racing on the TCX Advanced SL three years ago he has won every title put in front of him. In the Under-23 ranks he already has two World Championships, two European Championships, and is undefeated in the Dutch National Championships. He won more than 20 races during the 2011-12 season.

When it comes to bikes and gear, Giant-sponsored XC pros have a big bag of tricks. Riders like Carl Decker of the Giant Factory Off-Road Team are constantly experimenting, looking for any advantage.

No two cross-country courses are the same. The very term cross-country, “XC” for short, can mean many different things. For World Cup racers like Fabian Giger of the Rabobank-Giant Off-Road Team, whose battlegrounds consist mostly of fast, technical courses designed for great spectating, XC means short, steep climbs, tricky descents, and harrowing man-made obstacles.

For Carl, a U.S.-based veteran and two-time Downieville All-Mountain World Champion, XC racing is more loosely defined. Carl competes in everything from short-track to marathon to gravity-oriented enduro races.

Of all the different cycling disciplines, XC racing has seen the most dizzying evolution of technology over the last decade. Carl played a big role in helping Giant develop 29ers that weren’t just suitable for competition, but that gave athletes an edge. He’s usually the first Giant rider to race Giant’s new 29er technologies, including hardtails and Maestro Suspension bikes like the Anthem X 29er and Trance X 29er.

2 FluidForm Raw ALUXX SL tubesets are further refined through

a complex series of processes that provide strength (extrusion), weight reduction (butting) and shape (forming). Two key Giant technologies—FluidForming and press forming—work together to eliminate gussets, improve stiffness and minimize any extra weight.

3 Gusset-Free Design Most of Giant’s competitors use old-fashioned

gussets, additional pieces of material that are welded to the outside of a tube junction to provide additional support. Giant pioneered and perfected the use of radically shaped tubesets that provide all the strength and stability of gusseted tubes without added material and welds.

4 ALUXX SL Aluminum Formed from raw materials in Giant’s own forging

Kelli Emmett’s evolution as an off-road rider parallels the evolution of mountain biking itself over the last decade. She spent the first half of her career chasing XC titles, following the typical routine: train hard, put in the miles, focus on the finish line.

Somewhere along the way, Kelli branched out. In 2007 she won the Singlespeed World Championship, and around the same time started dabbling in Super D. Combining XC fitness with trail skills, courage and speed, Super D was perfect for the trail bikes she loved to ride on the Colorado trails near her home. She rode Trance X, Anthem X, whatever would help her go fast.

Kelli soon became instrumental in the development of women’s off-road bikes. Her latest project is the new Liv/giant Anthem X 29er W, the world’s first women’s-specific full-suspension 29er. Kelli worked with the Liv/giant product team to create the bike, which is well suited to her wide range of riding styles.

“I love it because it has all the benefits of the larger 29-inch wheels plus a lot of design work that makes it perfect for women riders like me,” Kelli said. “It’s something we’ve never had before. It’s faster, but it’s also more fun.”
