Every New Year, we all try to make resolutions along with the firmest intentions on keeping them. The tune is quite familiar: I’m going to lose weight, stop smoking, quit drinking, or even go back to school. Most times by February all of those goals along with some other ones are out the window. As we enter 2010 let us do it with a spirit of love and gratefulness and by making a commitment to become closer to God.

Here are 10 scriptural tips to help you create an intimate relationship with God

1. Give Sacrificially- Malachi 3:10 Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this," says the LORD Almighty, "and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that you will not have room enough for it. 2. Pray Diligently- Philippians 4:6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 3. Trust Indisputably- Proverbs 3:5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; 4. Believe Wholeheartedly- Romans 10:9 That if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 5. Worship Spiritually- John 4:24 God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in spirit and in truth 6. Seek Faithfully- 2 Chronicles 7:14 If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land. 7. Stand Firmly- Ephesians 6:10 Finally, be strong in the Lord, and his mighty power. 8. Witness Openly- Isaiah 43:10 “You are my witness,” declares the Lord,” and my ser-vant whom I have chosen, so that you may know and believe me and understand that I am he. Before me no God was formed, nor will there be one after me. 9. Love Universally- Leviticus 19:18 “Do not seek revenge or bear a grudge against one of your people, but love your neighbor as yourself. I am the Lord. 10. Thank Regularly- Ephesians 5:20 Always giving thanks to God the Father for every-thing, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ

It is my prayer that we can all incorporate these tips into our daily lives and that they help mold us into the people that God has called us to be.

“As for me and

my house, we

will serve the

Lord.”

~Joshua 24:15

Man is God’s chosen leader. He is charged with being the head of his house as well as being re-sponsible for the spiritual welfare of his family. The presence of a Men’s Ministry is paramount in the church and one of its main purposes is to challenge a man to grow deeper in intellect, emotion, and spirit. Over the last few months, the Men’s Ministry has sponsored a series of events meant to enrich and reach the community as well as New Gideon’s Members. However, herein lies the paradox, with as many men who attend New Gideon Baptist Church, why is there such a lack of participation and support? In an interview with Brother Carlos Durant, Men’s Ministry Leader, he had this to say about the future of the Men of New Gideon.

1) Do you have any idea of the steps you will take to re-organize and re-build the men's ministry? The steps that we want to take are simple. Find out what the men are interested in, what’s important to them, and what they would like to gain from the ministry. This is with the understanding that we are not about pleasing "man" but using the information we gather from them, and ensuring that it's something positive and in line with the vision that God has given Pastor. We can create an environ-ment that provides a more open and brotherly Men's Ministry rather than just a Men's Meeting. 2) Being one of the core leaders for this ministry, is there a special vision or goal that you would like to see for the men of New Gideon?

The vision/goal that I would like to see the Men of New Gideon achieve would be for us to have a closer personal relationship with God, becoming "doers" of His word, educated in the duties & respon-sibilities God has assigned to the Christian Man, and to conduct mission work outside the four walls of the Church. 3) What do you feel that God expects from you or men in general? Do you think that most men are confused in this matter? If so, do you feel that's the reason for the lack of participation? I feel that God expects men to be leaders. From the creation of man kind He appointed Man, Adam, to oversee all that was of the earth. It wasn't the action of the woman, Eve, that placed us in our current state but the decision made by Adam to act upon temptation, rather than to obey God's command. We as men must form a connection with God and understand his Word to become better leaders and to build stronger Christian families and communities. I feel that today men are confused in this matter because of the picture society has painted. Growing up, I noticed that most kids in my class only con-nection to God was the morning daily devotion in school. Once that was removed God was taken away from them as well. As adults we feel that we have to have a certain image to uphold. Those that are "Christians" fail to realize that before they accepted Christ they were of the world themselves, when someone comes to church and "sticks out," and they pass judgment rather than embrace them with open arms. We as Christians must encourage one another. No one wants to be a part of something if they are not comfortable or feel welcomed.
