The holidays light up the night with joyY
ou’ll get a big, jolly dose of the Christmas spirit on Friday evening, Dec. 3, when Night of Lights sprinkles twinkles through the streets and brings gifts of smiles to Coastsiders for the 11th year.
It starts at 6 p.m. when Half Moon Bay’s Main Street will close to traffi c for an evening of festivity. At 7 p.m., Main Street will come fully to life with a parade sponsored by Casey’s Café and the Cabrillo Unifi ed School District. A young Prince and Princess, nominated by teachers, will lead a stream of fl oats, an old-fashioned fi re engine on which h Santa is riding, and hundreds of children decked in twinkling lights.
After the parade, stroll up and down Main Street soaking in the holiday ambience. Holiday
music will come from carolers and musical ensembles like the Half Moon
Bay Sit-Down Band, the Scottish Fiddlers, carolers and other forms of entertainment like karaoke sponsored by Cunha Country Store and the Solimeno Belly Dancers. The street will sparkle
with Christmas trees donated by Cozzolino’s Tree Farm, and stores up
and down the way will have their doors open wide to greet shoppers with holiday
treats and arrays of possible gifts.Kids can have holiday fun while parents shop, at a special children’s
area sponsored by the Boys and Girls Club of the Coastside, local schools and nonprofi ts. You can also get the very taste of the holidays with hot cocoa, chestnuts roasting over an open fi re, and even some good old hot dogs.
And to top it off, get a close look at the festivities by riding by in a horse-drawn carriage — carriage rides are back this year!
Night of Lights is brought to the Coastside by the Half Moon Bay Downtown Business Association, the Half Moon Bay Coastside Chamber of Commerce and Visitors’ Bureau, Half Moon Bay Recreation Division and the Boys and Girls Club.

Give the gift of holiday cheer!
For the 25th year, since 1985, Coastside Hope’s Adopt-a-Family is hard at work making Christmas brighter for deserving local families and seniors by matching them
up with their big-hearted neighbors who will shop for Christmas presents off their wish lists.
By mid-November, Adopt-a-Family organizer Judy O’Leary said that some 110 families had been adopted out, and the center anticipates that this year the popular holiday outreach will serve about 400 — a number that includes families and about 58 seniors from Montara to Pescadero.
It all started on the fi rst Saturday in October when Adopt-a-Family volunteers began interviewing prospective recipient families. The interviews were concluded in about a month, and families and seniors were matched with holiday-minded Coastsiders who shopped for them. Donors who do not have time to shop began donating funds to buy gifts, and volunteers were organized to do the shopping.
The warehouse that as been home to Adopt-a-Family for something like 10 years now, at 214 Harvard Ave. in
Princeton, will open on Nov. 28 for the small army of wrappers to begin rustling paper and ribbons
and trading holiday cheer. That same day, gift distribution will also begin.
What seems hot this year?Kids are asking for art supplies, said O’Leary,
noting that shoppers are amassing supplies of paints, crayons or watercolors to put together into little
packets for children. “Doing art is something children need,” said
O’Leary. “I think it’s an instinctive thing.”Adults are, as is typically the case, asking for warm work
clothes and warm boots. “People are asking for more basic-need things,” said O’Leary.
Adopt-a-Family organizers welcome donations of money, and volunteers to adopt, shop or wrap. Call O’Leary at (650) 273-3967.

T he lawn in front of Our Lady of the Pillar Catholic Church will re-
enact biblical times when, for the 24th year, the Live Nativity Scene is set up.
In two-hour shifts from Dec. 18, 2010, through the Feast of the Epiphany on Jan. 2, 2011, in a small shack set up in front of the church next to the Bell Building, volunteers in robes portray Mary, Joseph, three kings and three shepherds. The woman portraying Mary cradles a doll representing the infant Jesus. A donkey, a goat and a sheep, on loan from a neighboring farmer, bring realism to the scene.
Passersby pause to regard the scene and refl ect on the Christmas story. Some abandon their cars to kneel in prayer outside the scene.
The actors playing the biblical family, kings and shepherds are all volunteers that Half Moon Bay resident Mel Schwing, who founded the scene and organizes it every year, gathered by calling roughly 100 people from the Coastside and Bay Area. “I get people from all around,” he said, noting that some are Catholic, others come from other faith traditions and some do not attend church at all.
Some of the volunteers are
doing repeat appearances as the kings and shepherds. Schwing says he usually does not repeat the roles of Mary and Joseph, and that he often retains married couples to play this role. This year, his own 60-year-old nephew from Cincinnati and his wife will play those roles.
The event is sponsored by the local Knights of Columbus, many of whom stand in the scene.
The schedule is as follows, with some of the scenes including Mass at the church: 2 to 4 p.m. and 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Dec. 18; 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Dec. 19; 5 to 7 p.m. Dec. 20, 21, 22 and 23; 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Dec. 24 and 11:30 p.m. Dec. 24 to 1:30 a.m. Dec. 25; 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Christmas and on Dec. 26 and ending with an appearance at the
Masses at 11:15 a.m. and 12:45 p.m. on Epiphany.
The scenes on Christmas and Dec.
19 and 26 will feature Spanish-speaking actors in the roles and the scene on De.
20 will feature Portuguese actors.
Schwing recruited representatives from
those local communities to organize those scenes.
Schwing says this will be his last year organizing the scene. “I want to train someone,” he said, but he’s the one to call for information at 726-6765.

Decorated rigging catches the holiday spiritT
he serene waters of Pillar Point Harbor will refl ect twinkling lights of all colors and all sorts
of holiday decorations at the Pillar Point Harbor Boat Decorating Festival, set this year for Dec. 11.
For more than a decade — closer to two, by some estimates — owners of commercial boats, members of the “liveaboard” community and owners of recreational craft, all berthed at Pillar Point Harbor have taken advantage of the event to unleash their creativity and holiday spirit by decorating their vessels. Strands of lights soar to the very tops of masts. Santas and reindeer and elves and even some original holiday characters appear on the decks.
Huge Christmas stars gleam in the rigging.
Typically, more than 20 boats participate.
Beginning at 6 p.m., judges will stroll the harbor pondering who will win the coveted fi rst prizes of one month’s free berth rent
for one recreational and one commercial boat.
As they do, the air will fi ll with holiday music from a live
band and also from a choral group singing holiday music.
Then, around 8 p.m., the crowd shifts from the nippy December night to inside the Half Moon Bay Yacht Club for a holiday party complete with holiday refreshments, announcement of the winners and lots of cheer.

14 Coastside Holidays Half Moon Bay Review
The Ritz-Carlton, Half Moon Bay, has a sleigh-ful of fun activities to help families celebrate the Christmas holidays.
It all began at the end of November, when the seventh annual Gingerbread House contest got underway. From candy-covered castles to confectioners’-dream cottages, the contest features all kinds of gingerbread structure trimmed with treats. From children to home cooks to culinary professionals, everyone has been welcome to give free rein to their architectural skills when it comes to gingerbread houses.
The results will be displayed in the hotel lobby through Dec. 4, up for bid in a silent auction which will benefi t children’s programs on the Coastside. Call 712-7007.
The winners will be announced during the holiday tree lighting celebration. This festivity takes place from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 4 in the hotel’s Tea Garden. It’s part of the resort’s annual holiday open house that attracts families and friends from far and near to enjoy the gingerbread houses, the resort’s spectacular Christmas tree and carolers adding to the holiday atmosphere.
The gingerbread house contest winners will be announced following
the tree lighting, and the event is further enhanced by hot chocolate, eggnog, apple cider and cookies. And, of course, Santa Claus will
pay a visit. For a touch of the elegant, children can take part in the Teddy Bear Tea, a favorite family tradition
made complete with holiday storytelling, children’s entertainment and a visit from the
Ritz-Carlton teddy Bear. Tea pastries, mini-fi nger sandwiches and a holiday candy buffet table are served. It takes place on Saturdays, Dec. 11 and 18, and Sundays, Dec. 12 an 19, with two seatings per day at $69 per adult guest and $59 per child guest age 12 and under, plus tax and gratuity. Call 712-7000.
And, want to learn how to decorate holiday cookies? Young guests will
enjoy a creative and tasty afternoon learning to transform plain sugar cookies into edible
bouquets. Dress for a mess as you learn to create edible art, and sample a cookie or two with milk before
going home — and don’t forget your complimentary chef ’s hat. The fee is $85 for kids age 5-12. Call 712-7667.
