Magic Carpet STEMGrades 3-5
Materials Needed: Each set should include: a construction paper rectangle (the magic carpet), a hole punch, yarn, six straws, four rubber bands, other bits and pieces that might be helpful
Process: Explain that our magic carpet has lost its ability to fly on its own. It’s our job now to make it fly again. Students must create a way to make the carpet (construction paper rectangle) fly again using only the materials that they have. They can touch whatever they want and put holes wherever they want, but to “fly” their carpet, they may ONLY touch the yarn. The carpet must be able to dip up and down and swing side to side.

Razzle Dazzle WordsGrades 3-5
Materials Needed: Vocabulary sheets, Teacher notes, pencils
Process: Explain to students that part of being well rounded and being able to speak intelligently is having a broad vocabulary. Each week, we will add five words to our Razzle Dazzle Vocabulary Folder. I let the students decorate a 3 prong folder for this and we add sheets every week. Students will write the word, write the definition, draw a picture of the word, use the word in a sentence, and find the part of speech. Our new Razzle Dazzle words this week:
1 – Apparition: the appearance of something unexpected and remarkable, like a ghost2 – Apprentice: a person learning a trade from someone that knows how to do it very well3 – Illusion: a false idea or belief4 – Mystify: to completely bewilder someone5 – Whimsical: acting or behaving in a playful and amusing way

Magic Square ScuffleGrades 3-5
Materials Needed: Option One: Set of magic squares for each group, pencils, Option Two: Laminate magic squares and use vis-à-vis markers
Process: Explain that a magic square is a block of numbers that equal the same number when rows are added horizontally, vertically, or diagonally. Separate the students into equal sized groups. Explain that they will be competing to finish their set of magic squares first. You can do this one square at a time and have a winner each round, or you can give them all of the squares at once and let them choose how to divide up the duties within their group.

My PatronusGrades 3-5
Materials Needed: construction paper, scissors, glue, one worksheet for each student, pencils
Process: There are lots of stories about magic and magical creatures, but perhaps one of the most famous is the Harry Potter series. In the Harry Potter books, several students (and their parents) can do a spell that creates what’s called a “patronus.” An animal of some sort that represents the person’s personality comes out of the tip of their magic wand and fights off harmful creatures to protect the person. The animal always has some of the same characteristics as the person doing the spell, and they only have one animal to represent them for the rest of their lives. Tell students to think carefully about what kind of animal might represent them – they must ask themselves, “What would my patronus be?” For example, a playful student in the book was represented by a rabbit. A strong student that had to fight to protect his friends often was represented by a large stag. Students must write two characteristics that they share with the animal at the bottom of the page. They will write which animal they chose and will create that animal from construction paper and attach to the worksheet.

Would You Rather?Grades 3-5
Materials Needed: Would you rather game sheet, strip of tape on the floor
Process: Place a strip of masking tape on the floor in a large enough line to hold all of your students. You should stand where you can see them all and they will either step backward or forward off the tape. Ask the “Would You Rather?” questions and students will show their answers by stepping backward or forward. (As you read, say “back” or “forward” before each answer).

Enchanted ExplorationGrades 3-5
Materials Needed: Choice Boards, Computers
Process: Explain to students that they are going to do research and they will get to choose what kind of project they will do to present their information. They will choose one or more (depending on your preference as the teacher) options from the choice board on the following page. Each project is mild, so you could even have the students do them all. When we did this project, we did the research on the computers in the classroom and the students were responsible for completing the projects as homework on their own time.
