THERAPY FOR LIVING FROM ONE WHO “WOKE UP”
• Buddha- derived from budh, “to awaken”.• Buddhism teaches the discoveries attain by
buddha.• Fundamental to buddah’s discoveries is that
human beings are prone to suffer.• One way of understanding Buddism is as a
therapy for living.
FROM PAMPERED PRINCE TO STARVING ASCETIC
• The future Buddha was given the name Siddhartha.• His family belonged to the warrior Kshatriya.• He was destined to become either a universal
king or a Buddha, an awakened one who would offer the world salvation.• His father pampered him and he was surrounded
by hundreds of servants and beautiful dancing girls.• He married a beautiful girl and was living his life
in satisfaction.
THE FOUR PASSING SIGHTS
• Despite his fathers efforts Guatama encountered the realities of the world in an episode known as the four passing sights • He encountered on four different trips an old
man, a diseased man, a corpse, and a religious ascentric.• The 3 sights were penetrating lesson about the
reality of suffering and the impermanent nature of life’s pleasures.
THE GREAT GOING FORTH
• Gautama at age 21, gave up his life as prince and got rid of his jewels.• His purpose was to put an end to old age and
death.• He renounced a life of power and enjoyment for
the life of a mendicant.• Buddhist referred to this event as a Great Going
Forth.
THE MIDDLE WAY
• Gautama is known more through legend then through fact.
• Gautama discovered the important Buddhist doctrine of the middle way.
• The middle way holds that a healthy spiritual life depends on a healthy physical life.
• It rejects indulgence in bodily pleasure but doesn’t reject the body itself.
• It embraces the idea that contentment is a good thing.
• Spiritual happiness implies happiness in body, mind, and spirit.
