What a glorious time of year! The fall session has been a strong start to our school year. We have already packed a great number of learning and enriching experiences into our first quarter of school, but the greatest of these experiences have been the opportunities to minister to your children to seek and trust in our Lord and Savior. The chapters and verses I have been embracing this fall have been Romans 12 & 13 and Colossians 3:23-24 “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.” These passages have given us purpose and focus in our ministry and dedication to the Christian education of the children. Additionally, in Chapels and in our charac- ter development, the fruits of the spirit have been a focus. Each week in the Next Week in Elemen- tary School notes one of the scriptures related to the fruit of the spirit is offered. God is Good, and we thank Him for the blessings of His children. With many opportunities ahead of us to worship, learn, and play together, the faculty and I thank you for sharing your children with us and being in Christ with us. Peace, Gingie Watt Principal’s Message MORNING ARRIVAL When dropping your child off at South, pull up to the flagpole and keep traffic moving. If your child needs assistance, please park in the designated parking area. If tardy, your child should report to the office. AFTER SCHOOL SAFETY Please help us by not allowing your child to come back into the classroom or play in the parking lot after school. For afternoon pick up at South (3:15-3:30), please park facing the parallel safety lanes. When leaving, please back up; do not drive through the safety lane. At North, if you park on the far side (east) parking lot, please come get your child & hold their hand as you cross the parking lot. WEEKLY CHAPEL VERSES “I have loved you with a love that lasts forever. So I have helped you come to Me with loving-kindness.” Jere.31:3 “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” John 13:34-35 “And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in him.” 1 John 4:16 “You will go out in joy and be led forth in peace; the mountains and hills will burst into song before you, and all the trees of the field will clap their hands.” Isaiah 55:12 “I have told you this so that My joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete.” John 15:11 “Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.” Eph. 4:3 “Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. CHRISTIAN CHARACTER THEME FOR 2014-2015

G.L.O.W. “God Lights Our World” has been chosen to be our character theme for 2014-15. Scripture to go with the theme is John 8:12, “I am the light of the world. Who-ever follows Me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” The Alexander family submitted this year’s theme idea. Congratulations to Sienna and Jessica Alexander!

GOD’S MUSIC

God’s music is in our ears everywhere in His beauti-

ful world. We hear it in hurrying streams, sighing winds,

singing birds, falling waters, and lapping waves. But

deeper still we hear it in our hearts when we stop to

listen. It comes in martial strains calling us to work and

to the service of our fellow men. It comes in softer mel-

ody calling us to rest and contemplation. Again it

comes in triumphant strains from another world when

the gates open and loved ones enter in . . . .

There is music in a mother’s love, a child’s trust, a

happy home, a brave man’s battle for a better world, an

unselfish act, a kindly deed. There is “a mighty music

echoing, far and near.”

Helen B. Emmons

Congratulations to all the students who complet-

ed the Summer Reading and Math programs! Recogni-

tion will be made at chapel.

HOMEWORK POLICY

As our Parent Handbook states, “Homework is an integral part of the school program. We believe students learn responsibility and can gain a special sense of accomplishment through the self discipline required in complet-ing homework assignments. We request par-ents’ full cooperation in seeing that assign-ments are completed.” In Grades 3-6, if homework isn’t complete, students may be asked to stay in from recess until it’s finished. We appreciate your support and help. Let your child’s teacher know if your child is spending an inordinate length of time on homework.

HONOR ROLL

Congratulations to our 51 students who qualified with a GPA of 3.8 or better for the A Honor Roll and 34 stu-dents who achieved a 3.0-3.79 GPA were placed in the B Honor Roll. Students in grades 4-6 are eligible for the Honor Roll based on their grades in reading, language, math, sci-ence, spelling, history and Bible. To be on the “A” Honor Roll, a student must have an A or A– average in those 7 subject areas with no D’s or F’s. To be on the “B” Honor Roll, a student must have a B or B– average with no D’s or F’s. Modified grades are not eligible for the honor roll.

IS YOUR CHILD FRUSTRATED WITH SCHOOLWORK?

“It’s not that I’m so smart,” Albert Einstein said. “It’s just that I stay with problems longer.” That’s good advice for your child, too. Kids of-ten get frustrated if they can’t find the answers right away. They want to give up. Here are some ways to help your child stick with a prob-lem: Reread the directions. It’s the oldest advice in the world. Set a timer. Tell your child, “ Keep at it until the timer rings. Then you can take a little break.” Talk it out. If your child is stuck, ask him/her to tell you what he’s/she’s done. Sometimes just by talking it out he/she can figure out what he/she has to do. Work on something else. If your child is stuck on a math problem, have him/her practice the piano. The answer may come to him/her while he’s/she’s thinking about something differ-ent. Learn some relaxation techniques with your child. Stress levels become high when we get frustrated. Closing your eyes and taking deep breaths and slowly counting to 10 are a few that work well. (Source: Parents Make the Differ-ence)

LEARNING, NOT GRADES

In the elementary grades we want students to love learning. Our focus is on helping children develop skills and gain knowledge, not on grades. While we want stu-dents to do their best and have a good attitude toward achievement, we do not want them to be anxious or pres-sured over grades. You, as parents, can help your child gain the proper perspectives regarding schoolwork by doing the following: 1. Discuss with your children what they are learning more

than what grades they are earning. 2. Have realistic expectations for each child concerning

grades. A “C” means “average,” not failing, and should be an acceptable grade.

3. Never compare grades to other family members—not

siblings and not your grades when you were in school. 4. Let children learn and achieve on their own. Some-

times they’ll learn more by experiencing a little frustra-tion or even failure. Don’t be a “helicopter” parent res-cuing your child from difficult assignments. It’s the child’s work, not the parents’. Homework should be meaningful practice; roughly 10 minutes per grade lev-el—1st 10-15 min.; 2nd 20 min.; 3rd 30 min., etc. Talk with your child’s teacher if homework becomes too much.

5. Don’t be concerned about the letter on a card, but more about the applied effort that occurred in achieving it.
