WHAT IS GIRL FeST?

GiRL FeST Hawaii’s mission is to prevent violence against women and girls through education and art. OUR GOAL is to change peer culture in order to prevent increasing violence against women and girls through education, art and positive representations of women.

The festival incorporates film, music, art, spoken word, and dance complemented by a conference involving panels, lectures, outreach workshops for children and adults that address themes such as body image, identity, empowerment, social change and methods on how to prevent violence in relationships.

GiRL FeST is a program of the Safe Zone Foundation a Hawaii nonprofit 501(c)3 run by a committed all-volunteer staff.

ART GALLERY

First Friday

Come join us in celebrating some of the best young women artists in Hawaii. Artists have created work on

the theme, “Transformation of society or transformation of self” and how this is perceived in a creative sense. Inspired by the idea of the caterpillar transitioning from a “belly crawler,” isolated and alone—taking shape in a cocoon of her own protection or the protection of others—into a magical creature able to fly free with a changed perspective on her own life and potentialities. Gallery runs through November and December at Bambu Two - 1144 Bethel Street.

HOPE MAYOHope has been penning songs for over a decade, many of which have been recorded and performed by award-winning musicians. She has quickly become a mainstay in Honolulu’s emerging Chinatown art and music scene, and is considered to be one of Hawaii’s most sought after performing songwriters.

SHOPPING LISTIn early 2007 architect Guy Jennings was diagnosed with brain cancer.

Upon word of his father’s illness, Guy’s son Grey returned to the house where he grew up to help his family. In the nine months that followed, Grey watched the father who had fed him as an infant, struggle to hold a spoon; the mentor who had taught him draw, lose his ability to design; his hero who shared the secrets to mending a broken heart, fail to form cognitive thoughts.

Songs began to appear in Grey’s notebooks and served as a release and an escape from this period. In an attempt to disguise these notebooks that held his

ugly recollections of brain cancer, Grey labeled them Shopping List.

Soon, a group was formed. Eric Pecoraro’s fierce skill on percussion and Toni Wong’s feverish techniques on bass, seamlessly integrated into these songs, emphasizing their meaning.

Understanding how ineffective preaching to an audience is, Shopping List practices subtlety on the topic when performing and let the songs do the speaking. The band plays music with no interest in any capital growth, but rather takes anything they make and applies it to organizations funding the research and treatment of brain cancer. Shopping List destroys cancer with music.

SIMPLE SOULS & FRIENDSSimple Souls holds it down with a killer list of songs. Both members add flavor to the group. Zaysha, with a voice that was destined for rock ‘n’ roll, is the duo’s powerhouse. Jenn adds a little fun with her creative singing style and zany personality. Their music selection is so extensive you’ll never tire listening to the sound that is Simple Souls.

WORKSHOPS

ThursdayNov.

11th FILM PREMIERE & GIRL PARTY

Super Fun Workshops! For Instructors’ Bios, see page 14

This year’s Hip-Hop workshop presents a growing

collective of Hawaii’s B-Girls. B-Girl Yoda LaneSki, Ola Pop and Remedee will each share their own specialty. Ola Pop is one of Hawaii’s original B-Girls and appeared on Breakin Hawaii. She teaches Hip-Hop dance to students with special needs and engages her classes with a wide variety of international Hip-Hop music. Ola Pop is one of the few breakers who is also a skilled Popper and Locker so she will be teaching that part of the class. Remedee is Hawaii’s premier B-Girl. She has been dancing since the late 90s and is the go to girl on Hawaii’s Hip-Hop history. Remedee is often featured in Hawaii’s Hip-Hop films and performances and judges most of Hawaii’s Hip-Hop

competitions. Her speciality is the new school style of Hip-Hop which includes fast fancy footwork and funky fresh freezes and she is Dope! They will challenge the class with moves like the backspin, the helicopter and the turtle by showing some of the secrets and necessary skills to obtain these moves. Come and be a part of Hawaii’s growing Hip-Hop collective. You don’t really need to bring anything to class, but a thick sweatshirt and knee pads are very helpful because they are a protective device. No charge, but we will have items to sell, so bring money if you want some original Hawaii Hip-Hop items. All age, no size limit. All are included in the circle of Hip-Hop. For Yoda LaneSki’s bio, see page 14.

B-Grrl BADASS!

In its fourth year at Girl Fest, this incredibly popular workshop explores matters of deep significance through the practice

of Council. Learn the simple and beautiful tools of heartfelt communication for lovers, family, friends and more.

Council is a time-honored means of authentic and heartfelt communication. This circular dialogue has been practiced throughout the ages. Its modern application can be found in many places where a deeper conversation is desired. From intimate relationships, to family gatherings, from classrooms to boardrooms, Council creates community. It offers its participants a safe and sage environment in which to open up and share thoughts and feelings. This extraordinary exercise in the art of listening holds the key to being heard.

Please join Bonnie Tamblyn in a Council circle and share your story. We will explore the basic principles of listening and speaking from the heart, creating community, and re-connecting to the power of the Voice of the Circle.

This fun, transformational workshop is a guided creative dance journey that

brings healing and balance to our essential energy centers. Our authentic movement and expression is our medicine, our truth, our power. Held in a safe, judgment-free space, this workshop is open to people of all ages, abilities and physical shape.

Dance experience is NOT needed. Everyone is a natural. We will learn ways to heal and empower ourselves through greater self-awareness. We will cycle through an exploration of our sensuality, power, heart, self-expression, intuition and connection with the divine. Inspiring world beat music takes you on a deep inner journey to greater self-love.

Great writing stems from great reading. This workshop explores

the strange alchemy of how crushing hard on other poets will make you a better writer -- helping you identify what is unmistakably unique about your own voice and your own story and unlocking the secret poet ninja tools you need to express it.

Catch this Poetry Workshop with award-winning poet Mindy Nettifee while she’s in town. Like the spawning of blooming algae, you’ll only experience this phenomenon unexpectedly!

Film SynopsisSoraya, born in Brooklyn in a working class community of Palestinian refugees, discovers that her grandfather’s savings were frozen in a bank account in Jaffa when he was exiled in 1948. Stubborn, passionate and determined to reclaim what is hers, she fulfills her life-long dream of “returning” to Palestine.

Once there, slowly she is taken apart by the reality around her and is forced to confront her own anger. She meets Emad, a young Palestinian whose ambition, contrary to hers, is to leave forever. Tired of the constraints that dictate their lives, they know in order to be free, they must take things into their own hands, even if it’s illegal. This is a Hawaii Premiere you won’t want to miss

Historical Context2008 marked the 60th anniversary of the Nakba, the ethnic cleansing of Palestine. In May 1948, Israel was declared a “Jewish state” despite the fact that the majority of the indigenous population consisted of Palestinian Arabs, Christians and Muslims.

Zionist leader David Ben Gurion instituted Plan Dalet in order to change the demographic make-up of historic Palestine and secure physical control over the territory.

As a result, thousands were killed and approximately 75% of the total Palestinian population, over 780,000 people, was expelled and dispossessed of their homes and land. More than 530 Palestinian villages were depopulated and/or completely destroyed, either bulldozed to the ground or bombed from the air. And, the world’s largest and longest-standing refugee population was created.

To date, Israel continues to refuse the right of the refugees to return home, in violation of the United Nations General Assembly Resolution 194, and legitimizes the dispossession of Palestinian lands, houses, property and businesses offering no compensation for what was lost in 1948.

“BANDS AGAINST VIOLENCE”

Anna’s (formerly Anna Bannana’s)

Bands Against Violence (BAV) is a GiRL FeST tradition. Every year we

invite our brothers and sisters to join us in speaking out against violence and supporting our cause at one of the oldest bars in town, Anna’s.

Hip-Hop artist Nickie P. throws down with a special showing by Natasha “T” Miller, champion slam poet.

Then hold on to your knickers while Dirty Genes, Hell Caminos, and Black Square, our conscious brothers, get you off your booty- in a platonically respectful rock-n-roll-type way, of course. And, they step up! Girl Fest once witnessed lead signer Mike Camino actually halt the set at a BAV show for a minute to call out a jerk harassing a girl in the audience. The jerk split, the concert rocked on. Pretty cool in our “book of cool.”

If you don’t have fun at this concert, there’s something wrong with you.

Hell Caminos Black Square

Bands Against Violence!

NICKI P.Nickie P. (a.k.a. Sick Nick) has pleased crowds all over the midwest. Nickie was primarily trained in classical, Broadway and Italian Opera, but Nickie found her true passion in Hip Hop music at the young age of 14. In 2002, Nickie became a member of her brother’s Hip-Hop crew and, in 2009, Nickie signed with Daleth music group from Southfield Michigan and put most of her focus and drive into finishing her first solo project “The Glitter Wars” (2009). Nickie is currently recording and performing around the U.S. For more info on Nickie P., visit: www.myspace.com/nikkipakasicknick www.myspace.com/sevenchakraz7c www.dalethmusic.com & www.nickiep.com

BLACK SQUAREBlack Square’s sound is a blend of ska and reggae delivered with the urgency and intensity of punk rock. As reggae music was the backdrop for these Hawaii raised punk rockers, the sound of Black Square came about organically from their musical and geographical upbringing. The band’s name comes from the Russian artist Kasimir Malevich’s 1915 painting of a black square. The theory behind the painting was that the material matter of art was without value and the true value in a work of art was in the feeling it expressed or provoked—without leading the viewer to a specific object based reflection. Black Square seeks to do the same with their music. The band includes Josh86 on guitar, Taylor on Bass, Brian Kim on drums, T.R. on alto sax, and G-Bone on the trombone, Babyface McEvan on tenor sax, and Jonny Boto on trumpet.

DIRTY GENESA Honolulu-based collective who have no limit to where they take their music. They started writing original music 4 years ago in the UH Manoa dorms with a gamer head-set and computer program to record guitar, bass, melody, pretty much any musical idea that came to their heads. They have since infused Hip-Hop, Dub, Roots/Foundation, Drum N Bass, Rock, Jazz/Fusion, Funk, Dubstep, Progressive, and Electronic elements with their music. Don’t be surprised if they have a 30 second disco or country breakdown within a Hip-Hop song. Dirty Genes is a 5-piece band consisting of: Spitzberg (MC, percussion), ADD (Bass), Dr. Dubnstein (Guitar), Ranking K. (Drums), KoKey (Keyboard, Sax).

HELL CAMINOSFollowing countless U.S. tours, he Hell Caminos have returned home. For 6 years, The Caminos have constantly pushed barriers and torn down walls in Honolulu’s underground music scene. Easily moving from swing to rockabilly to punk, they show you what its like to live on caffeine and sleep deprivation. Their music is astounding. Profound, Dark, Imaginative, all abound with the energy they use to convey their message. Best known for their manic live shows, they embrace showmanship like no other. They will burn a hole through the stage and a hole through your brain. The band includes: Michael Camino - Upright Bass, Nick Danger - Guitar, Handsome Jack - Standup Drums.

Attendees will get to make and keep their own Zine. Led by instructor Ara Laylo, students will see how fun and empowering it can be for anyone wanting to learn how to do simple layouts, get creative with art, write and publish articles, and other basics in zinemaking.

Zine Making!

Champion slam poet Natasha “T” Miller imparts her knowledge of

taking written poetry and making it suitable and comfortable to perform on stage. Sometimes a poem well written might not transfer well to a “performance.” If you are the ready to start polishing your stage skills, this is the workshop for you.

However, performances at this workshop are not required. If you just want to learn how you can express yourself better verbally or through poetry, this lesson still applies. You’ll have a great time learning from one of the nation’s rising stars in the spoken word community.

One of the great equalizing forces in a fight, for a woman, between

her and a stronger assailant, is the use of a weapon, whether it be a pen, a pencil, a key, or a pocket knife. The art of Escrima teaches the age old knowledge of self-defense with weapons. Whether you are armed or un-armed, Escrima offers women and girls practical techniques in defense when weapons such as knives, guns, or sticks are involved.

HISTORY: Great Grandmaster Pedoy was born on October 16, 1900 in

Ormoc City, Leyte, Philippines. At the age of six, he ran away from an abusive home and traveled into the mountains of the Southern Visayas where he was taken in by General Faustino Ablen. The General was a leader of the independence movement against the occupying American forces on the island of Leyte. For eleven years, the Great Grandmaster lived and trained under the General in the art of Derobio Escrima. To read more about this great history, visit: www.pedoysescrima.com

with the main curriculum focused on practical self defense tools. These tools incorporate how to escape from hand grabs, chokes, head locks, shoulder grabs, being backed up against a wall, to being pinned on the floor, and to multiple attackers. We believe it isn’t enough to know the technicalities but to truly believe you can protect yourself. Taekwondo Honolulu’s main goal is to create a helpful, encouraging,
