"Girl with Watering Can" by Renoir -1876 ART APPRECIATION Today your child learned about the painting "Girl with the Watering Can" by Pierre-Auguste Renoir. Renoir was born in 1841 and lived most of his life in Paris, France. Over his lifetime he painted over 6,000 paintings. His favorite subjects were women, children, flowers, and pretty scenes. Renoir once said... "Paintings should be likable, joyous, and pretty. There are enough unpleasant things in this world, we don't have to paint them as well." Renoir (along with Monet, Sisley, and Bazille) developed a new style of painting called Impressionism. They were not as interested in capturing all the details of a subject, but rather the "impression" of a moment in time. They loved painting out doors, and using lots of color and capturing the play of light on color.
