“It starts with the co-maradarie the kids have - they have a blast together,” says Urbas. “The sport can bring the best out of you. Just take a look at the CEOs of the big time companies or Fortune 500 companies . It is amazing how many people that are successful in life that were wrestlers.

“Maybe it is because there’s no excuses out there.”

The interview was con-ducted by GOHIOCASTS.com’s Zebulin Miller. He asks the Ohio Fall of Fame coach to explain how wres-tlers learn to handle both success and failure as life lessons.

“No excuses. They put their foot on the line and let it rip. If they do well, then OK. If they don’t, they go back and figure out why and work on own their weaknesses. The sport is amazing,” says Urbas.

“Wrestling makes young people be respon-sible for their perfomances. It makes them responsible for putting their life in or-

der, taking care of their academics, taking care of their wrestling, and work-ing on their weaknesses. You can’t pass the blame on to anybody.”

Greg Urbas started coaching at St. Edward in 1978 under legendary coach Howard Ferguson, who died unexpectedly in 1989 at age 51 after rattling off a string of 10 straight state championships with the Eagles.

“Coach Ferguson used to say that the problem with society is there aren’t enough people who want to dare to be great,” says Urbas. “They don’t want to accept challenges.

“Well, wrestlers do. From east coast to west coast, from north to south, wrestlers - when they step on the line -they take re-sponsibility for their ac-tions.”

Urbas is also the first to say that wrestling is a metaphor for life - that sports don’t last forever.

“We’ve told all our kids that athletics end,” says Ur-

bas. “How would it be if you put sports first? What would a kid have when the sport is over for him? We have to be able to look them in the eye and get them ready for life.”

“Coach Ferguson had a great phrase,” says Urbas. “He always said to the kids, ‘Use the sport. Don’t let the sport use you.’ It will open up doors for you. It will teach you how to prepare for challenges. Use the sport.”

It is a philosophy that has created a great tradi-tion at St. Edward High School.

“We had 15 of our alumni come back the day after Thanksgiving to practice. It was a Who’s Who. It was incredible,” said Urbas. “And they are all humble. Our freshmen don’t even know these guys. Ryan Bertin walks in and nobody knows him - he’s a two-time na-tional champ (University of Michigan). We had to introduce him!

“Every single kid

that graduates from Ed’s is welcome back. It is their school. It is their family. It is a philosophy that St. Ed has. You are always wel-comed back. This is your home.”

The most important thing, concludes Coach Ur-bas, is a healthy attitude, an approach to life personified by Assistant Coach John Heffernan (a two-time all-American at Iowa and state champ at St. Ed).

“He is the heart and soul of St. Ed wrestling, Coach Heff,” says Urbas. “He speaks to to the kids - don’t get too high with a victory, don’t get too down with a loss.”

In accepting the great challenges of life, a man finds his better self. For Ed’s wrestlers, it means prepar-ing for a national-caliber schedule that includes the best in the nation each year.

“Ferg told us years and years ago that if you chal-lenge the kids, it is easier at practice. They won’t need much motivation be-cause they see what’s com-ing up on Friday or Satur-day night. The challenge is there,” said Urbas.

“He did it for two rea-sons: 1 - To set goals super high to achieve more. 2 - It is very easy to motivate kids when you have a tremen-dous schedule like that.”

“The kids know it’s a challenge and they go after challenges. I’ve got a junior who never wrestled before and he came out. He’s doing decent - he competes!

“I asked coach Heff, ‘Would there ever have been anybody at Iowa in the room who had never wrestled before?’ I’m think-ing there’s no way. He looks at me and says his best friend in college had never

wrestled before and lasted four years! He was their number one med student! He’s doctor now.”

It all boils down to maintaining the right at-titude.

“How do you survive? Attitude!” exclaims Coach Urbas.

“Attitude, attitude, at-titude! Whatever you’ve been blessed with - great! But you better have an attitude. Bring your at-titude to the room. Bring a great effort - whatever you’re blessed with....And use what you are blessed with!”

(Ed. note: Many thanks to interviewer Ze-bulin Miller who shared this interview with us. It may be seen at www.TheVillagerNewpaper.com, where it links to Flowrestling.com)

Colin Heffernan joined a long list of St. Edward champs at the Medina Invita-tional Tournament with his title at 138 pounds in December.

Ed’s senior Edgar Bright has his hand raised as a champ at the nationally known Walsh Ironman Tournament Dec. 8

Greg Urbas was inducted into the Ohio Wrestling Coaches Hall of Fame last March. He has guided the Eagles to 15 of the school’s 27 state cham-pionships.

by Dr. Louis Malcmacher of The Healthy SmileIt’s Never Too Late…I hope 2013 has started out real

well for you. It is wonderful to turn the corner of a new year with all the hope and promise that it can bring. Let’s hope that 2013 will be a great year for all of us.

After being a dentist for over 30 years now I have met all kinds of people who have come into our of-fice as patients. The Healthy Smile is a family practice so we see people of all ages. People’s mindset about their teeth is certainly a reflection of their general mindset. I have had 50-year-old people who have come into the office and don’t want to fix their dental problems because they figure that they don’t have that much longer to live. I have had 85 year old patients who have come in who have wanted porcelain veneers and whitening and have the mind set that they are going to live a long time and they want to be able to enjoy their smile and they want to make sure that they are able to chew their food correctly.

We recently had a couple of patients who are in their 80’s come into our office whose attitude to-wards life really inspired everyone in our office. It is no wonder that they are also in good health because their attitude towards life is just exceptional. Your emotional attitude cer-tainly translates into physi-cal well being, we see this all the time. By the way, there is a huge connec-tion between having your natural teeth and enjoy-ing a longer life span. The Mayo Clinic did a study a few years ago that showed that people who have their

natural teeth chew better and enjoy their food more and typically live ten years longer than those with den-tal problems. Having teeth and a great smile have both physical and emotional benefits that will pay off for years to come.

Let us know if we can help you with any of your dental needs, whether it is a free consultation or a sec-ond opinion. Please call us today at 440-892-1810 for an appointment.

It’s never too late to start developing a healthy smile. Remember, we are here to help you smile.

Two generous young girls from Lorain captured the Christmas spirit when they arrived unannounced at St. Medical Center in Westake with $150 they had raised to help others.

The girls - Natasha Miller and Lindsay Ellis - had one goal in mind: “So children could have a better Christmas.”

Natasha and Lindsay, students at Clearview High School, launched a “penny drive” by saving change, plus selling ribbon and snowflake magnets since last holiday season. They even hand-painted a couple personal t-shirts

Girls make it “A Better Christmas” at SJMCfor their campaign that say “For a Better Christmas.”

The girls surprised staff at the SJMC ED the week be-fore Christmas by bringing jars, cans and bags of change which was used to fund the annual Gift Drive at SJMC. “It is just wonderful,” said Sr. Judy Weirick, Vice President Mission and Ministry. “For young people to do something like this all by themselves is just the kind of thing we need to recognize in our community.”

What I’m about to say may seem a little backwards, or perhaps harsh, especially coming from the parent of two young children. It is un-derstandable to want what’s best for your children. As parents we are willing to sacrifice free-time, sleep, and more often than we’d like to admit our sanity, among many other things. However, one thing parents should not sacrifice for their kids is retirement security.

All too often, parents postpone saving for retire-ment or reduce contribu-tions to retirement plans so they can save for their children’s college educa-tion. As cold-blooded as it may sound, your retirement should come first. Your op-tions in retirement are much more limited than your chil-dren’s education options.

Your child may be able to borrow money to pay for college. The federal student loan program provides low-interest loans which makes borrowing a very reason-able alternative. Borrowing to pay for retirement is not an option. While parents and students can agree that graduating with debt is not a perfect situation, the alter-native may be much worse. By failing to save for retire-ment, your children may end up with the burden of supporting you later in life, when they have their own li-abilities.

Other options for stu-dents include applying for scholarships and finan-cial aid, working their way through school, living at home, or attending a less expensive school. The alter-natives for retirement may

Prioritize Your Savings in 2013

be less appealing. They in-clude, part-time work, living frugally, or depending on your children’s financial as-sistance.

Many parents plan to start saving for retirement, or plan to save more, once their children have gradu-ated. This strategy, how-ever, means giving up time, which is a very important component of investing. The earlier you start sav-ing for retirement, the more time your money will have to compound. For example, if at age 30 you save $6,000 a year for 35 years, and earn an average annual return of 8%, you will have over $1,100,000. If you wait 15 years to start funding re-tirement, you will have to save over $22,000 per year at an 8% average annual re-turn to end up with roughly $1,100,000 at age 65. (This is a hypothetical illustration and is not intended to por-tray any particular invest-ment.) So, time certainly becomes an irreplaceable element to your retirement planning.

While our rational thoughts may tell us to put our children’s education be-fore our own needs, I urge you to think this strategy through. It sounds selfish at first, but it’s important. I believe you owe it to your-self and your children to put your retirement saving first.

Community West Foundation....Fanning the Flames of Hope

In awarding $3.2 million in grants to local chari-table and community service organizations through December, Community West Foundation celebrated a year of caring at its Illuminating Hope ceremonial din-ner at Westwood Country Club Dec. 12. The evening also welcomed new board members and celebrated the Foundation’s progress. Incoming Chair for 2013, William W. Baker, cap-tured the essence of the Community West mission, de-fining the Foundation as a “well-recognized center of benevolence for the health and well being of our com-munity and illuminating hope for the needy.” “I am very proud of our the long list of our grantees The Cleveland Foodbank, North Coast Health Ministry, Malachi House, Lutheran Metropolitan Ministry, Youth Challenge and many others,” he said. He lauded “the great momentum of our Foundation and our desire and goal to perpetuate this force of Illuminating Hope.” The theme of “Illuminating Hope” is one often referenced by Community West Foundation President and CEO, David T. Dombrowiak. A ceremonial candle lit as the dinner opened, said Dombrowiak, “repre-sents the symbolic “Flame of Hope” that we all carry within our hearts.” Retiring from his role as Grants Committee Chair is Harry A. Zilli, Jr. whose 2005-2012 tenure saw Com-munity West Foundation distribute over $37 million in grants to west side charitable causes. Mr. Zilli be-gan his service with the Fairview Foundation Board in 1986. He remains with Community West Foundation as a Life Trustee. Mr. Zilli’s zeal for hands-on service is one of dis-tinction. His leadership of the grants comittee on-site

visits allowed Foundation members to learn first-hand about the needs of the commu-nity. The Foundation’s grants have resulted in over $2.8 million meals for the hungry, 810,000 nights of shelter for the homeless, 530,000 instances of medical and mental health care as well as grants to Fairview and Lutheran Hospitals and community organi-zations totaling $15.4 million. Outgoing 2012 Chairs Henry Jacques and Charles A. Rini, Sr. were also recog-nized. “Tonight’s celebration wouldn’t be complete without acknowledging Henry Jacques time, generosity and commitment,” said Mr. Dombrowiak. “And, Charles Rini has placed footprints on our foundation that have been wide, deep and lasting.” Four community leaders have also been added to the Board of Trustees: Daniel P. Filippi, Patrick J. Mulloy, Dr. Joyesh Raj and Michael G. Romanello. “They bring a wealth of talent and expertise to our efforts,” said Mr. Dombrowiak. “I was very impressed that each one asked about all the requirements of being a Board mem-ber, which indicates their sense of commitment to our organization and of our work on behalf of the our com-munity.” Looking ahead to 2013 and beyond, Community West Foundation is poised for growth as a vibrant agen-cy of community care. “We measure our successes by the number of people who have been helped by the Community West Foun-dation - whether they are the hungry, the unemployed,

our vulnerable senior citizens, those with disabilities, those without medical care, or our children who suffer from neglect,” said Mr. Dombrowiak. In closing David Dombrowiak quoted Dorothy Day’s words: “‘The mystery of the poor is this: that they are Jesus, and what you do for them you do for him.’ He added, “Let us continue to be exemplars of these memorable words and follow the divine law of obliga-tion to our brothers and sisters who are suffering, dis-tressed, and destitute.”

Your Donor Advised FundCan be the Answer to

Someone’s Prayers Each of us has the power to answer someone’s prayers. Helping others through philanthropy can take many forms, and whatever your gift – large or small, time or treasure – there is an opportunity to help. A creative way to arrange a gift is through a donor advised fund at Commu-nity West Foundation – an easy, effective tax efficient vehicle that helps you manage and carry out your charitable giving. You may want to give back to the com-munity, share your philanthropic values with your children or create a highly orga-nized center for all your gifting activities. A donor advised fund provides all of this and more so that you can focus your time and energy on making a difference. In 2011, the holders of the 55 Donor Advised Funds at the Community West Foundation showed incredible generosity in making gifts that totaled $2,000,000.00 to 83 agencies. Their commitment and con-cern inspires us all!

Avon Schools to Join SWC

The Southwestern Conference has voted to accept Avon Local Schools as a full conference mem-ber beginning with the 2015-2016 school year. Mi-chael McCarthy, Commis-sioner of the Southwestern Conference, stated: “The quality of Avon’s academic, athletic, extra-curricular and co-curricular pro-grams and facilities pro-vides a fitting match with the other member schools of the Southwestern Con-ference.”

Current Southwestern Conference schools in-clude Avon Lake, Westlake, Brecksvi l le-Broadview Heights, North Olmsted, Berea (two high schools), Olmsted Falls, and Am-herst-Steele.

Berea High School will combine with Mid-park High School in the 2013-2014 school year to become Berea-Midpark High School, which has provided the conference the ability to add Avon Lo-cal Schools.

New YearNew You

Have you made your New Year’s resolutions? Af-ter eating through the holi-day parties, healthier living goals often top the list. But resolutions never last. In-stead of creating a list of resolutions this year, create a new habit.

Habits last, and they lead to long-term results, and more importantly a healthier lifestyle. They re-quire more patience, but they are worth the wait.

ASAP Fitness in Rocky River provides education on developing healthier habits which will allow you to adopt a lifestyle that will achieve your goals. We recommend one habit at a time. Research has shown

New Year, New You and New Tools to Make it Happen!

taking on one new habit has a success rate of greater than 85%. If you take on 2 new Habits at once the success rate drops to 35%. If you try to do three or more things at once your rate of suc-cess is less than 10%! “Change requires focus and focus requires prioritizing. Focus on one thing at a time and don’t move on until you master it,” said Mark

ASAP Fitness state-of-the-art fitness cen-ter is located, at 2212 Wooster Road. We will be hosting our first FREE seminar of 2013. Sunday January 20th, at 1pm and it will be dedicated to a Guide to Creating the Fitness Habit and Health-ier Lifestyle.

Space is Limited! Call to pre-register 440.333.LIFT (5438) or email [email protected].

The beginning is never easy, but the begin-ning is only temporary if you stick to it and stick-ing to it will eventually become habit which takes the “work” right out of it.

Please call ASAP Fitness at 440-333-LIFT (5438) to learn more how your healthier lifestyle can begin! New Year, new you and new tools to make it all happen.
