Geospatial Big
Data
What is so special about geospatial Big Data?
Practically everything has an explicit or implicit geospatial location — explicit when a latitude and a longitude
are provided, implicit when an address is specific, like 380 New York Street, or (my favorite example) implied
in a mobile Tweet such as, “I’m eating a Chicago style pizza in downtown Manhattan.” Even if the location
service on the phone is disabled, a natural-language processing analyzer can determine that Chicago is not
the correct location of the Tweet — downtown Manhattan is the location, and that can be converted into explicit
latitudinal and longitudinal values.
Mansour Raad Discusses Geospatial Big Data: The Next Big Trend
in Analytics
Everything that happens, happens somewhere. It’s the where that provides context. In the words of Richard
Saul Wurman, “Big Data is junk if you can’t understand it, but a map is a pattern made understandable.”
And that is most evident today when something happens like the November 2015 mass shooting in Paris. A
map is presented on TV highlighting the time and location of the events, helping us make sense of the
sometimes crazy world we live in.
How can industries take advantage of Big Data?
What’s getting better is our ability to model and forecast our cultural,
physical, and biological futures. The difference is real-time data. You
have sensors pulling in information about traffic, noise, air pollution,
water quality — even conversations on Twitter. GIS has always been
about data, but now GIS is getting filled with streams of real-time data.
We’re able to integrate that data from different sources and analyze it
against historical patterns to make predictions.
Instead of simply telling you what current traffic conditions are, we can
predict what the next hour of traffic will be like and tell you the best way
to get where you’re going. That’s powerful for you as an individual, of
course, but if you’re a logistics professional, you can dramatically change
your business by rerouting your trucks. Continue Reading Mansour Raad, BigData Expert, Esri

Learning should be timely, easy, and fun. This statement is the core philosophy driving a complete overhaul
of the Training website and a new, open learning experience for Esri users.
The extreme makeover of our website is well underway, with a release planned for early August. A major
focus of the redesign is incorporating resources produced by teams across Esri.
As a company, we create a slew of educational content. So much, in fact, that it can be difficult to know
where to find the most relevant content for your needs. Or so we’ve heard.
The solution is twofold:
Centralized access — The new Training catalog will pull in content from multiple Esri sites to make it
easier to access authoritative ArcGIS learning resources.
Professional curation — Before you ever see it, all content in the new catalog will have been vetted
for accuracy and currency and tagged to be easily discoverable.
The new catalog will include:
Web courses
Training seminars
Videos
Learn ArcGIS lessons
MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses)
Educator resources, including Mapping Our World lessons,
GeoInquiries, and SpatiaLABS
A lot more
Opening Up…
It’s been clear for a while that GIS software is no longer the sole domain of GIS professionals. Organizations
now want their entire workforce prepared to be productive with ArcGIS maps and apps.
Which brings us to the second major focus of the website redesign: open access.
When the new site launches, we will no longer require access codes for web courses or even support web
course purchases. Every person at every organization that has an Esri product or program that includes a
current maintenance subscription will have unlimited access to all self-paced e-Learning on the new Training
website.
Everyone.
That’s right. Everyone.
…To Support Lifelong Learning
The redesign has a third focus: make the site (and learning experience) more fun. Because in these days of
rapid technology changes, instant communication, and complex challenges requiring creative solutions,
lifelong learning is something we all must cultivate.
Continually learning new tools and workflows sometimes feels like a chore. We’re working hard on the fun
factor so building your skills and keeping them current will be convenient and enjoyable. Watch this video for
a glimpse of new site features.
