and can be found further on in this newsletter

Areas of main concern

Students need to ensure they are wearing navy blue shorts or a skort to school No denim or own

choice in shorts

Standard lsquorunnersrsquo are permitted The majority of shoe colour is to be white black or blue Skate

shoes high top shoes or converse style lsquorunnersrsquo are not permitted

Hair accessories must be in line with the school colours white blue or black and be subtle in

appearance We encourage students with shoulder length hair or longer to wear their hair tied

back

No nail polish or acrylic nails are permitted

Head Lice

There are some incidents of head lice across the school and we encourage students to wear their hair tied

up to assist in preventing head lice being spread As in line with our uniform policy students will be

encouraged to tie their hair up

Play Space

Our new mud kitchens have been installed near the stage area and junior playground Students are loving

the new additions to the play area Thank you to Claire and Joe for organising and installing these

Thank you to the families involved with making this happen

Food Bank

Thanks to Claire and Wal for delivering our final collection of items

Julie returns

After 3 weeks of Long Service Leave Julie returns to school

tomorrow I am sure she had a fabulous time travelling around Paris

and Norway We look forward to hearing about her adventure

Remembrance Day

On Monday it was Remembrance Day All members of GPS held a

minute silence to remember those who died and fought in the

wars to protect our nation Students and teachers have been

discussing the significance of the day and completing creative

learning and activities to learn more about the day

Enjoy the weekend everyone

Regards Lisa

Be a Reading Angel Our students need your help Do you have some spare time on your hands Do you

enjoy listening to children read Then this might just be the

activity for you We are looking for volunteers in 2020 who

would be willing to be a part of our Reading Angels team

Whatrsquos involved Listen to children read out loud for a short period of

time

Support children with decoding words and

comprehension

Support children with the reading of high frequency

words

Be able to attend regular sessions (weekly fortnightly or monthly)

Work with students from years Prep ndash 6 supporting their home reading program

Have a current Working With Children Check

Why do we need Reading Angels We have a number of students in our school community who donrsquot have the opportunity to read

out loud to an adult at home on a regular basis We are trialling the idea of a Reading Angels

initiative where we would have a roster of adults (Grandparents Parents and community

volunteers) to support a list of identified students with their reading Depending on how many

volunteers we get we will set up a roster of days times and students that you will be working

with

Why is reading out loud so important Reading out loud is widely recognised as the single most important activity leading to language

development Among other things reading out loud builds word-sound awareness in children a

potent predictor of reading success

If you are interested in supporting this initiative or know of someone that would love to help

please email Melanie Hunter huntermelaniejedumailvicgovau or contact the school office

STUDENT BIKE ETIQUETTE WHEN EXITING AND ENTERING

THE SCHOOL GROUNDS Pedestrians have right of way and priority on footpaths over bike riders Bike riders should give way to pedestrians When students are exiting and leaving the school grounds it is recommended that they do not mount or dismount their bikes immediately at the exitentry gates or amongst high traffic pedestrian areas close to the school

Recently we have had complaints from parents about our students and their bike riding behaviours That students are pushing out the exit point at the end of the day without any regard for pedestrians then in large groups riding fast and in packs away from the school Parents grandparents and small children have nearly been mowed down and forced up against the fence to avoid being hit by the bikes

Parents please remind your children about courteous bike riding behaviour and that pedestrians actually have right of way Bike riders should give way and make way for all pedestrians and be conscious of the fact that there are many small children parents and grandparents who also need to use the pathways at the start and end of each day
