HABITAT FOR HUMANITY BUILD

We are so excited to be part of

a coalition of Presbyterian

churches in the community

participating in building homes

for two deserving families. Unfortunately, while we

thought the groundbreaking would take place on Satur-

day, November 19th we received word that it will likely be

postponed again. However, we did want to introduce you

to the two families we are supporting:

The Alaniz Family

Mr. and Mrs. Alaniz and their

three children have been living

in an unsafe condo for over six

years. Not only is it termite-

infested, black mold has been

found in the kitchen. The prop-

erty owner claims to be unable

financially to repair the home,

and the family cannot afford to move. The family says

that owning a home would give them a sense of pride

and comfort, “knowing that we are giving our children a

mold-free and safe environment to live in.”

The Nguyen Family

Mr. and Mrs. Nguyen and

their two teenagers live in a

small two-bedroom apart-

ment, which they have lived

in for 14 years. Their teenage

son and daughter share a

bedroom, which means they

have no privacy or space.

Rodent sightings have in-

creased recently and the apartment has mold, which is

making the son sick, constantly coughing and sneezing.

The family cannot afford to move, but dreams of owning

a home with enough space for their family, a place that is

mold and rodent-free.

THANK YOU!

Thank you to everyone who sent

me cards for my birthday. I enjoyed

reading each and every one, and

feel so loved by all of you.

- Sincerely, Dottie Carlson

R. Winston Presnall, Pastor PASTOR’S LETTER

Dear Citizens,

I hear November 9th will be a much awaited holiday - self-proclaimed by those sickened, repulsed, and over-

whelmed by this seemingly endless campaign leading up to election day on November 8th. This tongue-in-

cheek holiday proposes to a brutalized electorate a day of rest from the ad-nauseum, oft-repeated negatives

of this campaign cycle.

Proponents of “November 9th" admit it’s one more sarcastic jab

at this campaign season. The day should be marked with silence

from the candidates and every organization with an iron in this

election fire, who has branded what is right or wrong with this or

that. Silence from the pundits. No more words spewed forth from

Rush, Lawrence, Morning Joe, Rachel, and even, Peter, Paul and

Mary about all of the issues. No more utterances from a guy

named Stephen, and somebody with a British accent, named Oli-

ver. On November 9th, it all goes silent. I suppose.

“November 9th" belongs to the citizenry of this grand land, a day

to ourselves - a new festive holy day - where “I voted” stickers

can be worn on the bottoms of sneakers, on feet propped up on park benches as we, the voting populace,

rest from our election labors. It’s over! Now, silence!

But all is not silent on November 9th!

“God has made of one blood all the nations of the earth”, the Apostle Paul wrote. Here is another voice in

the whirlwind of divisive politics that pits people against people in this one nation and one world. A divine

voice that reminds us that we are one people. God intended it so.

James M. Nelson in his book Between Two Gardens, wrote about our common oneness:

“Each of us is made up of more than a trillion individual cells,

all attempting to work together and maintain one another. Our

bodies are communities with their own ventilation systems,

sewage systems, communication systems, heating units, and a

billion miles of interconnecting streets and alleys.” (P. 33) We

are the same bodies, “of one blood all the nations of the

earth.”

“A nation divided against itself cannot stand” - Abraham Lin-

coln. Neither can a body. Cancer ravages cells and turns cells

on each other. The body collapses when there is a division of the house left unchallenged.

Well, “November 9th” is not simply a sarcastic day after another divisive election. Not about silence. It is a

day to hear a Huge Voice urging us to work for unity, to preach for inclusion, argue a moral and persuasive

truth about oneness in city, nation, world and kingdom. “God has made of one blood all the nations of the

earth.“ A Huge Voice over the din of divisive politics. Let’s take our hands off our ears, open our eyes.

Warmly,

SESSION HAPPENINGS

Diane Woollett - Clerk of Session

The Hanging of the Greens, one of our beloved worship ser-

vices, is scheduled for Sunday morning, November 27th.

Many have asked for some explanation/reminder of the meaning

of the stained glass windows throughout the worship center. You

can listen in to the children’s sermons during Advent as they go

on a visual tour of these glass treasures.

Ken Zanca will be returning from his new home in La Quinta dur-

ing Advent to teach a Faith and Practice Class following the wor-

ship service.

Session is investigating the possibility of revamping the church

website and our use of social media.

November News

"Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever."

This month on November 16th, from 6:00-7:00 pm, we will celebrate our annual "Soup and

Bread Feast" which will include a power point presentation of the children and teaching team. All

the children & their families are invited. The congregation is also invited to join us.

Having a meal together remains a time-honored expression of hospitality

and friendship.

Mealtimes can be wonderful times of building bonds of love. This is

always a well-attended, blessed time to celebrate our thanksgiving

together.

Thank you congregation for your continued prayers & support:

Jim & Shirley Mahoney blessed us with a big bundle of "little cups for wee

little hands". Many have dropped items off and we got to see you and say

Thank You! Often we find these items and it is a pleasant surprise.

Fun Facts:

The phrase "Do not be afraid" is written in the

Bible 365 times. That is a daily reminder from

God to be fearless every day.

The country India gave us the word "Pyjamas".

Wish list: Small cups for wee little hands, Kleenex,

baby wipes, fish crackers, small and large thin

white paper plates for crafts, your old towels when

you get new ones, and anything you want to

Class Schedule:

Worship I: October 30th: This

class explores the Reformed na-

the Book of Order sections on

question: Why do we worship this way?

we will look at Sacraments, the role of lay liturgist,

and Kierkegaard's influence on thinking about con-

gregational Worship.

Check press for other class topics in November.

Faith & Practice is our Sunday morning Christian Ed-

ucation class for adults following our Worship ser-

vice. All are invited to participate in, and explore, a

variety of topics and themes that we can all relate to

and apply to our own lives in faith. Come and see

what these thought-provoking sessions are all about!

CONGREGATIONAL MEETING:

BOYS & GIRLS CLUB

Sat • Oct. 29th • 9:30 am • GSC South Rm.

An exciting potential opportunity has come knocking

at the door of First Church. The Boys and Girls Club of

Tustin would like to establish a Boys and Girls Club of

Orange at the Grand Street Center. This program

would bring approximately 100 children and youth to

our facilities each afternoon for athletics, crafts and

working on computers. A meeting of all interested par-

ticipants (including Stakeholders) of the church is

scheduled. Please come and hear about this exciting

possibility!

FLU CLINIC

Sun • Nov. 13th • 9:00 am-12:00 pm • Geneva Room

Now that fall is here, the flu season is approaching.

But so is our Free Flu Clinic! While it will be a little

later than last year, it is still before the peak of the

flu season, which occurs in January. Nurse Sue

Johnson urges you to do the following five things to

avoid catching the flu. 1) Be sure to eat nutritious

food, drink plenty of water, and get an adequate

amount of sleep. 2) Continue with your level of

physical activity. 3) Wash your hands frequently. 4)

Cover your mouth and nose when coughing or

sneezing. 5) Stay away from those who are known or

appear to be ill, whether with the flu or something

else. Both Sue and Kathleen, our Parish nurses, will

be at the church administer the vaccine to those

who wish to have it.

Thanksgiving is this month, a time when many of us overeat. Thus, it is not surprising that No-

vember is National Diabetes month. Type 2 Diabetes (also called age onset) is a growing prob-

lem in the United States. With this in mind, I thought you might like to know about the three

most common tests for diabetes: AIC, FPG, and OGTT. AIC measures your average blood glu-

cose for 2-3 weeks. An advantage of this method is that you do not have to fast. FPG stands for

Fasting Plasma Glucose and you cannot have anything to eat or drink for at least 8 hours be-

fore the test. OGTT stands for Oral Glucose Tolerance Test. This is a 2-hour test that checks

your blood glucose levels before and 2 hours after you drink a special sweet drink. It shows how your body

processes glucose. The results for the three tests are –

AIC FPG OGTT

Normal less than 5.7% less than 100 mg/dl less than 140 mg/dl

Prediabetes 5.7-6.4% 100-125 mg/dl 140-199 mg/dl

Diabetes 6.5% or higher 126 mg/dl or higher 200 mg/dl or higher

Having prediabetes puts one at a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes or cardiovascular disease. Early

treatment can return your blood glucose levels to the normal range. You can lower your risk for type 2 dia-

betes by losing 7% of your body weight and exercising moderately (such as brisk walking) for 30 minutes a

day, five days a week.

WELCOME IGLESIA 29!

First Presbyterian Church welcomes

Iglesia 29 to our campus, a new His-

panic Church which began worship-

ping here on October 23rd. They have

a weekly service on Sundays at 1:00

pm in McAulay Hall, and a weekly Bi-

ble study on Tuesdays at 7:00 pm in the Chapel. Ig-

lesia 29 is served by Co-pastors Ramiro and Melissa

Cruz. They have two children: Israel and Michelle.

Some of you may have met Melissa last month over

a treat of churros, which she provided as she intro-

duced herself during our fellowship hour. For more

information about Iglesia 29 please visit their web

site at www.iglesia29.org.

ty. This year we plan to expand the kids crafts area

to include the whole family. We will NOT be offering

clothing, however we will be offering accessories

such as purses, gloves, scarves, hats and caps for

children, women and men. We WILL be collecting

the following items for donation:

Travel-size hygiene items such as shampoo,

body wash, toothpaste, disposable razors and

lotions.

New and gently used items the children can give

to their mom and dad as gifts. A gift of a new

ball or a new doll for a child.

$5 Gift cards from Taco Bell, McDonald's, Carl's

Jr., Del Taco, Dollar Tree, Target, Walmart, etc.

We will wrap these with 2 pairs of tube socks for

the teens.

Please bring donations to the church office or con-

tact Judy Sollee: 714 858 8030.

Bonnie Sharp is heading up the collection of plates

of cookies for families.

Volunteers: We need you. We need people to escort

our families from service to service around the

campus. To give encouragement, to hold a baby

while a parent receives a service, to stay with them

and be their best friend for the day. Call Marsha

Zembower at 714-283-3842 to sign up.
