Canticle of Zechariah (Benedictus) Luke 1:68-79

Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel;he has come to his people and set them free.

He has raised up for us a mighty savior, born of the house of his servant David.

Through his holy prophets he promised of old that he would save us from our enemies, from the hands of all who hate us.

He promised to show mercy to our fathersand to remember his holy covenant.

This was the oath he swore to our father Abraham:to set us free from the hands of our enemies, free to worship him without fear, holy and righteous in his sight all the days of our life.

You, my child, shall be called the prophet of the Most High;for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way,to give his people knowledge of salvationby the forgiveness of their sins.

In the tender compassion of our Godthe dawn from on high shall break upon us,to shine on those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death, and to guide our feet into the way of peace.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit,as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

A reading from the first Book of Kings 19:4-8

Strengthened by that food, he walked to the mountain of God.

Elijah went a day’s journey into the desert, until he came to a broom tree and sat beneath it. He prayed for death,

saying: “This is enough, O Lord! Take my life, for I am no better than my fathers.” He lay down and fell asleep under the broom tree, but then an angel touched him and ordered him to get up and eat. Elijah looked and there at his head was a hearth cake and a jug of water. After he ate and drank, he lay down again, but the angel of the Lord came back a second time, touched him, and ordered, “Get up and eat,

else the journey will be too long for you!” He got up, ate, and drank; then strengthened by that food, he walked forty days and forty nights to the mountain of God, Horeb. The word of the Lord.

The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear him and delivers them.Taste and see how good the Lord is; blessed the man who takes refuge in him. r.

A reading from the Letter of Saint Paul to the Ephesians 4:30–5:2

Walk in love, just like Christ.

Brothers and sisters: Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with which you were sealed for the day of re-

demption. All bitterness, fury, anger, shouting, and reviling must be removed from you, along with all malice. And be

kind to one another, compassionate, forgiving one another as God has forgiven you in Christ.

So be imitators of God, as beloved children, and live in love, as Christ loved us and handed himself over for us as a sacrificial offering to God for a fragrant aroma. The word of the Lord.

Gospel Acclamation John 6:51I am the living bread that came down from heaven,

says the Lord;whoever eats this bread will live forever.

A reading from the holy Gospel according to John 6:41-51

I am the living bread that came down from heaven.

The Jews murmured about Jesus because he said, “I am the bread that came down from heaven,” and they said,

“Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph? Do we not know his father and mother? Then how can he say, ‘I have come down from heaven’?” Jesus answered and said to them, “Stop mur-muring among yourselves. No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draw him, and I will raise him on the last day. It is written in the prophets: / They shall all be taught by God. / Everyone who listens to my Father and learns from him comes to me. Not that anyone has seen the Father except the one who is from God; he has seen the Father. Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever believes has eternal life. I am the bread of life. Your ancestors ate the manna in the desert, but they died; this is the bread that comes down from heaven so that one may eat it and not die. I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world.”The Gospel of the Lord.

ReflectionBread of Love

This is the third week we have been listening to Jesus’ Bread of Life Discourse and, like the crowd in the Gospel, we still struggle to understand. What sense can we possibly make of someone who says that he is the “bread of life come down from heaven”?

One small step toward understanding might be to ask what it means to be alive. Is life just a short time of biological vitality

between conception and death? If so, then bread is something that lets us survive from one day to another. St. Irenaeus’s notion of being alive was something altogether different. He famously said that the glory of God is a human being fully alive.

Before today’s scene Jesus offered these hungry people the bread of life in abundance. There was a wonderful excess, vastly more than was needed for mere survival, twelve basket-fuls left over. And now today Jesus goes on to say that this is the bread of eternal life.

To be alive now for a Christian is already to share the bread of eternal life. When I am asked at check-in for a flight whether London is my final destination, usually I cannot resist saying “No.” I hope that Paradise is my final destination. Yet eternal life is not pie in the sky when we die. It begins now whenever we manage to share God’s love and forgiveness with each other. Love is already a sharing in the eternal life of God.

If we are to live to the full, then we have to die to ourselves as the center of the world. Love is not just a nice feeling. It is a radical loss of self-centeredness, a transformation of our humanity. As St. Paul writes: “All bitterness, fury, anger, shouting, and reviling must be removed from you. . . . Be kind to one another, compassionate, forgiving one another as God has forgiven you in Christ.” This is what it means to come alive. The bread of eternal life we receive is more than sustenance for survival. It is a share even now in love’s victory.

EveningGod, come to my assistance.Lord, make haste to help me.

(opt. hymn, pp. 368–75)Psalm 141:1-5, 8-10I have called to you, Lord; hasten to help me!Hear my voice when I cry to you.Let my prayer be accepted as incense before you,the raising of my hands like an evening oblation.

Set, O Lord, a guard on my mouth;keep watch at the door of my lips!Do not turn my heart to things that are evil,to wicked deeds with those who are sinners.

Never allow me to share in their feasting. If a good man strikes me it is kindness;but let the oil of the wicked not anoint my head.Let my prayer be ever against their malice.

To you my eyes are turned, O Lord, my Lord.In you I take refuge; spare my soul! From the trap they have laid for me, keep me safe;keep me from the snares of those who do evil.

Let the wicked together fall into their traps, while I pursue my way unharmed.

Scripture 1 Corinthians 11:23-26

For I received from the Lord what I also handed on to you, that the Lord Jesus, on the night he was handed

over, took bread, and, after he had given thanks, broke it and said, “This is my body that is for you. Do this in re-

membrance of me.” In the same way also the cup, after sup-per, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.” For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you pro-claim the death of the Lord until he comes.

139August 12–18Nineteenth Week in Ordinary Time

Within the WordNew Life in Ezekiel

For the next two weeks, we hear a semi-continuous reading of the book of Ezekiel in the weekday Lectionary. Ezekiel is known by many as the prophet whose poetry includes bizarre imagery such as figures with human forms, each with four faces (a man, a lion, an ox, and an eagle) and four wings. Even more mysti-fying is the fact that the faces of these creatures “looked out on all four sides,” yet they “did not turn when they moved” (Ezek 1:5-12). Ezekiel is further known for pronouncing several severe condemnations against the Israelites’ ancestors as well as his own contemporaries (chapters 20–24). He then con-demns the nations that surrounded them (chapters 25–32).

Ezekiel identifies 593 BC as the beginning of his ministry among the exiles (1:2). The context is the horror and destruc-tion of the sacred and beloved city Jerusalem and the misery that the exiles endured during the deportation and as refugees in a foreign land. The prophet employs shocking imagery and biting denunciation of those he considered responsible for this tragedy. However, Ezekiel’s message does not end in de-spair. In the midst of this devastation and anguish, he envi-sions a new and promising world. One must read on to find the message that is both positive and heartwarming. But it is unmistakably there.

In an abrupt reversal of sentiment, Ezekiel announces the promise of deliverance from suffering and an extraordinary new birth. The image of the field filled with dry bones (37:1-9) often has been considered a kind of Halloween scenario. Such

a perception is a complete misrepresentation of its profound religious setting. In order to emphasize the astonishing char-acter of the new life that God envisions for this decimated and dispirited people, the prophet emphasizes the impossibility of their gaining a second chance through their own merits. This nation is not only dead, but like a skeleton whose bones have been scattered, it is completely disjointed. Furthermore, these disconnected and scattered bones are dry, devoid of life-sustaining marrow. Each detail of this riveting picture shouts loudly: “Life is gone!”

However, such is not the case. Human ingenuity cannot repair what has been broken, nor can life reconstitute itself without the basic building blocks of life. At this moment of utter devastation, God cries out through the prophet: “See! I will bring spirit into you, that you may come to life” (37:5). With these words, the miracle of new creation unfolds before the prophet’s very eyes. Bone is joined to bone, wrapped in sinew, and clothed in flesh and skin. When spirit is breathed into them, the bones stand upright and alive. A new people has been raised up out of dead bones.

The sinfulness of the people had led to their punishment. However, it was God’s reputation (“holy name”) that suffered (36:20-23). The people’s exile from their land led the other nations to perceive God as cruel and vindictive. The rebirth of the nation reverses this image. Here God is seen as gracious in granting the Israelites—and us today if we turn to God—a second and astonishing chance at life: “I will give you a new heart and place a new spirit within you, taking from your bodies your stony hearts and giving you natural hearts. . . . You shall be my people, and I will be your God” (36:26, 28).

Stand upright and live!—Sr. Dianne Bergant

Blessed Among UsSt. Jeanne de ChantalCofounder of the Order of the Visitation (1572–1641)

Jeanne de Chantal was born into a wealthy family in Dijon, France. She married a baron at the age of twenty and bore seven children (three of whom died in infancy). In 1600 her life took a tragic turn when her husband was killed in an accident. In the following years, as she struggled with her children’s upbringing, her heart increasingly turned to reli-gious life. She vowed that she would never remarry.

In 1604 a sermon by the holy bishop of Geneva, Francis de Sales, was a turning point in her life. It was also the begin-ning of a deep spiritual partnership that would advance them both along their paths to sanctity. Francis taught that the spiritual life was for everyone, not just for monks and nuns. Jeanne immediately responded to his message and submitted to his spiritual direction.

Eventually they founded the Order of the Visitation of Mary, a congregation dedicated to prayer and works of charity. Her grown son opposed her entering religious life. Laying himself on the threshold of their home, he implored her to stay. She stepped over him and proceeded on her way.

Jeanne proved a gifted superior, with a profound instinct for the spiritual life. “No matter what happens,” she wrote, “be gentle with yourself.” Before her death in 1641, her order grew to include eighty communities in several countries. Her feast day is August 12.

“Sometimes put yourself very simply before God, certain of His presence everywhere, and without any effort, whisper very softly to His sacred heart whatever your own heart prompts you to say.” —St. Jeanne de Chantal

A reading from the Book of the Prophet Ezekiel 1:2-5, 24-28c

Such was the vision of the likeness of the glory of the Lord.

On the fifth day of the fourth month of the fifth year, that is, of King Jehoiachin’s exile, the word of the Lord

came to the priest Ezekiel, the son of Buzi, in the land of the Chaldeans by the river Chebar.— There the hand of the Lord came upon me.

As I looked, a stormwind came from the North, a huge cloud with flashing fire enveloped in brightness, from the midst of which (the midst of the fire) something gleamed like electrum. Within it were figures resembling four living creatures that looked like this: their form was human.

144 August 13 Monday 145

Then I heard the sound of their wings, like the roaring of mighty waters, like the voice of the Almighty. When they moved, the sound of the tumult was like the din of an army. And when they stood still, they lowered their wings.

Above the firmament over their heads something like a throne could be seen, looking like sapphire. Upon it was seated, up above, one who had the appearance of a man. Upward from what resembled his waist I saw what gleamed like electrum; downward from what resembled his waist I saw what looked like fire; he was surrounded with splendor. Like the bow which appears in the clouds on a rainy day was the splendor that surrounded him. Such was the vision of the likeness of the glory of the Lord. The word of the Lord.

A s Jesus and his disciples were gathering in Galilee, Jesus said to them, “The Son of Man is to be handed

over to men, and they will kill him, and he will be raised on the third day.” And they were overwhelmed with grief.

When they came to Capernaum, the collectors of the temple tax approached Peter and said, “Does not your teacher pay the temple tax?” “Yes,” he said. When he came into the house, before he had time to speak, Jesus asked him, “What is your opinion, Simon? From whom do the kings of the earth take tolls or census tax? From their sub-jects or from foreigners?” When he said, “From foreigners,” Jesus said to him, “Then the subjects are exempt. But that we may not offend them, go to the sea, drop in a hook, and take the first fish that comes up. Open its mouth and you will find a coin worth twice the temple tax. Give that to them for me and for you.”The Gospel of the Lord.

ReflectionThe Divine Passive

A pious Jew could not utter God’s name. So how did Jews refer to God? The “Divine Passive” is a clever, respectful, and quite unambiguous solution. Instead of naming God, it leaves the subject unstated but clearly implied. So when Jesus says, “your sins are forgiven” or “you are healed of your infirmity,” the people know perfectly well that God is the agent.

Today’s Gospel contains an important Divine Passive: “The Son of Man will be raised on the third day.” Jesus is saying

that his abba is Lord of Life and will act accordingly; he trusts in God’s enduring faithfulness. Jesus is so committed to God’s will, and so loved by God, that he will literally give his life yet remain confident. It is an astonishing relationship and one that Jesus speaks of frequently. Moreover, he promises his disciples that God will always remain faithful in their regard too.

But the disciples were “overwhelmed with grief,” unable to move beyond Jesus’ warning of his impending death and notice the promise of resurrection. Matthew suppresses Mark’s revealing statement that “they did not understand.” And now, after 2,000 years, are we likewise overwhelmed, do we not understand? Or will we trust fiercely and forever that God is in charge, God is the subject, and God is the Faith-ful One?

My soul, give praise to the Lord;I will praise the Lord all my life, sing praise to my God while I live.

Blessed is he who is helped by Jacob’s God,whose hope is in the Lord his God,who made the heavens and the earth, the seas and all they contain, who preserves fidelity forever, who does justice to those who are oppressed.

It is he who gives bread to the hungry, the Lord who sets prisoners free, the Lord who opens the eyes of the blind, the Lord who raises up those who are bowed down.

It is the Lord who loves the just, the Lord who protects the strangerand upholds the orphan and the widow, but thwarts the path of the wicked. The Lord will reign forever, the God of Sion from age to age.

Scripture Romans 13:3-4a, 6-7

For rulers are not a cause of fear to good conduct, but to evil. Do you wish to have no fear of authority? Then do

what is good and you will receive approval from it, for it is a servant of God for your good. This is why you also pay taxes, for the authorities are ministers of God, devoting themselves to this very thing. Pay to all their dues, taxes to whom taxes are due, toll to whom toll is due, respect to whom respect is due, honor to whom honor is due.

Blessed Among UsSt. Maximilian KolbeFranciscan Martyr (1894–1941)

On July 30, 1941, a prisoner escaped from Auschwitz, the notorious Nazi camp in Poland. In retaliation the commandant lined up inmates of cell block fourteen and ordered that ten of them be selected for death. When one of the ten cried out that he would never see his family again, another prisoner stepped forward and volunteered to take his place. The commandant asked who he was. He replied, “I am a Catholic priest.” The commandant accepted his offer, and so Fr. Maximilian Kolbe assumed his place among the condemned.

Kolbe and the other prisoners were locked in a death bun-ker with nothing to consume but their own urine. He passed the time leading his companions in prayer, preparing them for death, and keeping vigil with them as they gradually suc-cumbed. Two weeks later Kolbe and three others were still alive, at which point the Nazis had them dispatched by injec-tions of carbolic acid.

In 1982 Pope John Paul II, who as bishop of Krakow had often prayed at the scene of Kolbe’s death, presided over his canonization in Rome. Present for the ceremony was the man in whose place Kolbe had died. The pope called Kolbe a true martyr and saint for our times whose heroic charity proved victorious over the architects of death.

“These Nazis will not kill our souls, since we prisoners certainly distinguish ourselves quite definitely from our tormentors; they will not be able to deprive us of the dignity of our Catholic belief.”

—St. Maximilian Kolbe

A reading from the Book of the Prophet Ezekiel 2:8–3:4

He fed me with this scroll, and it was as sweet as honey in my mouth.

The Lord God said to me: As for you, son of man, obey me when I speak to you: be not rebellious like this

house of rebellion, but open your mouth and eat what I shall give you.

It was then I saw a hand stretched out to me, in which was a written scroll which he unrolled before me. It was covered with writing front and back, and written on it was: Lamentation and wailing and woe!

He said to me: Son of man, eat what is before you; eat this scroll, then go, speak to the house of Israel. So I opened my mouth and he gave me the scroll to eat. Son of man, he

Gospel Acclamation Matthew 11:29abTake my yoke upon you and learn from me,for I am meek and humble of heart.

A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew 18:1-5, 10, 12-14

See that you do not despise one of these little ones.

The disciples approached Jesus and said, “Who is the greatest in the Kingdom of heaven?” He called a child

over, placed it in their midst, and said, “Amen, I say to you,

unless you turn and become like children, you will not enter the Kingdom of heaven. Whoever becomes humble like this child is the greatest in the Kingdom of heaven. And whoever receives one child such as this in my name receives me.

“See that you do not despise one of these little ones, for I say to you that their angels in heaven always look upon the face of my heavenly Father. What is your opinion? If a man has a hundred sheep and one of them goes astray, will he not leave the ninety-nine in the hills and go in search of the stray? And if he finds it, amen, I say to you, he rejoices more over it than over the ninety-nine that did not stray. In just the same way, it is not the will of your heavenly Father that one of these little ones be lost.”The Gospel of the Lord.

ReflectionA Pointed Observation

Where did we get the idea that some people just don’t matter? That some must be counted, some must be the object of my intense concern, but others are simply the despised of this world, of no account? Reading today’s Gospel in the light of the sacrifice of Maximilian Kolbe, I now wonder how I have in the past managed to read through this passage so lightly, imagining it to be a sentimental story about children rather than a pointed observation about the value of human life.

Kolbe’s story is daunting. With what rationale would I do this, stepping forward to be discarded so that another might live? Voluntarily entering the long history of this world’s victims—conquered peoples sold as chattel, infanticide a common practice throughout the ages, widowed women or the disabled simply abandoned to the elements—seems like a romantic and useless gesture.

As a mother, on the other hand, I understand his sacrifice. Yes, I would willingly die for my children. Take me. But out-side the circle of “me and mine,” I turn away from the down-trodden and despised every day. Some self-important calculus within me must be excusing this. I have things to do; I have others depending on me; I have appointments.

By this point in his ministry, Jesus had apparently met my kind already. Until I can welcome the rejected of this world, Jesus says, I cannot welcome him. It is Christ who is the link between this Gospel’s twin exhortations that we must both become the least and go after the least.

But there is more, for this mother. Finding Christ in the face of those I reject might free me, at last, to see Christ in the face of those I love. Then I can see that their lives, to which I so fiercely cling, are not about me. My own life,

indeed, is not about me either. Finding Christ in the face of those I reject may be the first step to seeing the face of Christ in my own.

Then the voice that I had heard from heaven spoke to me again and said, “Go, take the scroll that lies open

in the hand of the angel who is standing on the sea and on the land.” So I went up to the angel and told him to give me the small scroll. He said to me, “Take and swallow it. It will

turn your stomach sour, but in your mouth it will taste as sweet as honey.” I took the small scroll from the angel’s hand and swallowed it. In my mouth it was like sweet honey, but when I had eaten it, my stomach turned sour. Then someone said to me, “You must prophesy again about many peoples, nations, tongues, and kings.”

Eucharistic Prayer IIIYou are indeed Holy, O Lord, and all you have createdrightly gives you praise, for through your Son our Lord Jesus Christ,by the power and working of the Holy Spirit, you give life to all things and make them holy, and you never cease to gather a people to yourself,so that from the rising of the sun to its settinga pure sacrifice may be offered to your name. Therefore, O Lord, we humbly implore you:by the same Spirit graciously make holythese gifts we have brought to you for consecration, that they may become the Body and Bloodof your Son our Lord Jesus Christ,at whose command we celebrate these mysteries. For on the night he was betrayedhe himself took bread, and, giving you thanks, he said the blessing, broke the bread and gave it to his disciples, saying:

Take this, all of you, and eat of it,for this is my Body, which will be given up for you.In a similar way, when supper was ended,he took the chalice, and, giving you thanks, he said the blessing, and gave the chalice to his disciples, saying:

Take this, all of you, and drink from it,for this is the chalice of my Blood, the Blood of the new and eternal covenant, which will be poured out for you and for manyfor the forgiveness of sins.Do this in memory of me.The mystery of faith.

We proclaim your Death, O Lord, and profess your Resurrectionuntil you come again. When we eat this Bread and drink this Cup,we proclaim your Death, O Lord, until you come again.Save us, Savior of the world, for by your Cross and Resurrectionyou have set us free.

Therefore, O Lord, as we celebrate the memorialof the saving Passion of your Son,his wondrous Resurrectionand Ascension into heaven, and as we look forward to his second coming,we offer you in thanksgivingthis holy and living sacrifice.

Look, we pray, upon the oblation of your Churchand, recognizing the sacrificial Victim by whose deathyou willed to reconcile us to yourself, grant that we, who are nourishedby the Body and Blood of your Sonand filled with his Holy Spirit, may become one body, one spirit in Christ.May he make of usan eternal offering to you,so that we may obtain an inheritance with your elect, especially with the most Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God,with your blessed Apostles and glorious Martyrs(with Saint N.: the Saint of the day or Patron Saint)and with all the Saints,on whose constant intercession in your presencewe rely for unfailing help.May this Sacrifice of our reconciliation,we pray, O Lord, advance the peace and salvation of all the world.Be pleased to confirm in faith and charityyour pilgrim Church on earth, with your servant N. our Pope and N. our Bishop, the Order of Bishops, all the clergy, and the entire people you have gained for your own.Listen graciously to the prayers of this family, whom you have summoned before you:in your compassion, O merciful Father, gather to yourself all your childrenscattered throughout the world.† To our departed brothers and sistersand to all who were pleasing to youat their passing from this life, give kind admittance to your kingdom.

There we hope to enjoy for ever the fullness of your glorythrough Christ our Lord, through whom you bestow on the world all that is good. †Through him, and with him, and in him,O God, almighty Father,in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory and honor is yours, for ever and ever.Amen.The Lord’s Prayer, p. 358.

Eucharistic Prayer IVPrefaceIt is truly right to give you thanks, truly just to give you glory, Father most holy, for you are the one God living and true, existing before all ages and abiding for all eternity, dwelling in unapproachable light;yet you, who alone are good, the source of life, have made all that is,so that you might fill your creatures with blessingsand bring joy to many of them by the glory of your light. And so, in your presence are countless hosts of Angels, who serve you day and nightand, gazing upon the glory of your face, glorify you without ceasing. With them we, too, confess your name in exultation, giving voice to every creature under heaven,as we acclaim:Holy, Holy, Holy Lord God of hosts . . .We give you praise, Father most holy, for you are great

and you have fashioned all your worksin wisdom and in love. You formed man in your own imageand entrusted the whole world to his care,so that in serving you alone, the Creator,he might have dominion over all creatures. And when through disobedience he had lost your friendship, you did not abandon him to the domain of death. For you came in mercy to the aid of all,so that those who seek might find you.Time and again you offered them covenantsand through the prophetstaught them to look forward to salvation. And you so loved the world, Father most holy, that in the fullness of timeyou sent your Only Begotten Son to be our Savior.Made incarnate by the Holy Spiritand born of the Virgin Mary,he shared our human naturein all things but sin.To the poor he proclaimed the good news of salvation,to prisoners, freedom, and to the sorrowful of heart, joy.To accomplish your plan,he gave himself up to death, and, rising from the dead,he destroyed death and restored life. And that we might live no longer for ourselvesbut for him who died and rose again for us,he sent the Holy Spirit from you, Father,as the first fruits for those who believe,so that, bringing to perfection his work in the world,he might sanctify creation to the full.

Therefore, O Lord, we pray:may this same Holy Spiritgraciously sanctify these offerings, that they may becomethe Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christfor the celebration of this great mystery, which he himself left usas an eternal covenant. For when the hour had comefor him to be glorified by you, Father most holy, having loved his own who were in the world,he loved them to the end:and while they were at supper,he took bread, blessed and broke it,and gave it to his disciples, saying:Take this, all of you, and eat of it,for this is my Body, which will be given up for you.In a similar way, taking the chalice filled with the fruit of the vine,he gave thanks, and gave the chalice to his disciples, saying:

Take this, all of you, and drink from it,for this is the chalice of my Blood, the Blood of the new and eternal covenant, which will be poured out for you and for manyfor the forgiveness of sins.Do this in memory of me.The mystery of faith.

We proclaim your Death, O Lord, and profess your Resurrectionuntil you come again.

When we eat this Bread and drink this Cup,we proclaim your Death, O Lord, until you come again.Save us, Savior of the world, for by your Cross and Resurrectionyou have set us free.

Therefore, O Lord,as we now celebrate the memorial of our redemption,we remember Christ’s Deathand his descent to the realm of the dead,we proclaim his Resurrectionand his Ascension to your right hand, and, as we await his coming in glory,we offer you his Body and Blood, the sacrifice acceptable to youwhich brings salvation to the whole world.Look, O Lord, upon the Sacrificewhich you yourself have provided for your Church, and grant in your loving kindnessto all who partake of this one Bread and one Chalicethat, gathered into one body by the Holy Spirit, they may truly become a living sacrifice in Christto the praise of your glory. Therefore, Lord, remember nowall for whom we offer this sacrifice:especially your servant N. our Pope,N. our Bishop, and the whole Order of Bishops, all the clergy, those who take part in this offering, those gathered here before you, your entire people, and all who seek you with a sincere heart.

Remember alsothose who have died in the peace of your Christand all the dead, whose faith you alone have known. To all of us, your children, grant, O merciful Father, that we may enter into a heavenly inheritancewith the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God,and with your Apostles and Saints in your kingdom. There, with the whole of creation, freed from the corruption of sin and death, may we glorify you through Christ our Lord, through whom you bestow on the world all that is good.Through him, and with him, and in him,O God, almighty Father,in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory and honor is yours, for ever and ever.Amen.The Lord’s Prayer, p. 358.

Eucharistic Prayer for Reconciliation IPrefaceIt is truly right and justthat we should always give you thanks,Lord, holy Father, almighty and eternal God.For you do not cease to spur us onto possess a more abundant lifeand, being rich in mercy, you constantly offer pardonand call on sinnersto trust in your forgiveness alone.

Never did you turn away from us,and, though time and again we have broken your covenant, you have bound the human family to yourselfthrough Jesus your Son, our Redeemer, with a new bond of love so tightthat it can never be undone.Even now you set before your peoplea time of grace and reconciliation, and, as they turn back to you in spirit, you grant them hope in Christ Jesusand a desire to be of service to all, while they entrust themselvesmore fully to the Holy Spirit. And so, filled with wonder,we extol the power of your love, and, proclaiming our joyat the salvation that comes from you,we join in the heavenly hymn of countless hosts,as without end we acclaim:Holy, Holy, Holy Lord God of hosts . . .You are indeed Holy, O Lord, and from the world’s beginningare ceaselessly at work,so that the human race may become holy, just as you yourself are holy.Look, we pray, upon your people’s offeringsand pour out on them the power of your Spirit, that they may become the Body and Bloodof your beloved Son, Jesus Christ,in whom we, too, are your sons and daughters.Indeed, though we once were lostand could not approach you,

you loved us with the greatest love:for your Son, who alone is just, handed himself over to death, and did not disdain to be nailed for our saketo the wood of the Cross. But before his arms were outstretched between heaven and

earth,to become the lasting sign of your covenant,he desired to celebrate the Passover with his disciples. As he ate with them,he took breadand, giving you thanks, he said the blessing, broke the bread and gave it to them, saying:

Take this, all of you, and eat of it,for this is my Body, which will be given up for you.In a similar way, when supper was ended, knowing that he was about to reconcile all things in himselfthrough his Blood to be shed on the Cross,he took the chalice, filled with the fruit of the vine, and once more giving you thanks, handed the chalice to his disciples, saying:

Take this, all of you, and drink from it,for this is the chalice of my Blood, the Blood of the new and eternal covenant, which will be poured out for you and for manyfor the forgiveness of sins.Do this in memory of me.The mystery of faith.

We proclaim your Death, O Lord, and profess your Resurrectionuntil you come again. When we eat this Bread and drink this Cup,we proclaim your Death, O Lord, until you come again.Save us, Savior of the world, for by your Cross and Resurrectionyou have set us free.

Therefore, as we celebratethe memorial of your Son Jesus Christ, who is our Passover and our surest peace,we celebrate his Death and Resurrection from the dead, and looking forward to his blessed Coming,we offer you, who are our faithful and merciful God,this sacrificial Victimwho reconciles to you the human race.Look kindly, most compassionate Father,on those you unite to yourselfby the Sacrifice of your Son,and grant that, by the power of the Holy Spirit,as they partake of this one Bread and one Chalice, they may be gathered into one Body in Christ, who heals every division.Be pleased to keep us alwaysin communion of mind and heart, together with N. our Pope and N. our Bishop.Help us to work togetherfor the coming of your Kingdom, until the hour when we stand before you,Saints among the Saints in the halls of heaven, with the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God,

Guide to Lectio DivinaChoose a word or phrase of the Scriptures you wish to pray. It makes no difference which text is chosen, as long as you have no set goal of “covering” a certain amount of text. The amount of text covered is in God’s hands, not yours.

Read. Turn to the text and read it slowly, gently. Savor each portion of the reading, constantly listening for the “still, small voice” of a word or phrase that somehow says, “I am for you today.” Do not expect lightning or ecstasies. In lectio divina, God is teaching us to listen, to seek him in silence. God does not reach out and grab us but gently invites us ever more deeply into his presence.

Ponder. Take the word or phrase into yourself. Memorize it and slowly repeat it to yourself, allowing it to interact with your inner world of concerns, memories, and ideas. Do not be afraid of distractions. Memories or thoughts are simply parts of yourself that, when they rise up during lectio divina, are asking to be given to God along with the rest of your inner self. Allow this inner pondering, this rumination, to invite you into dialogue with God.

Pray. Whether you use words, ideas, or images—or all three—is not important. Interact with God as you would with one who you know loves and accepts you. Give to God what you have discovered during your experience of meditation. Give to God what you have found within your heart.

It is not necessary to assess the quality of your lectio divina, as if you were “performing” or seeking some goal. Lectio divina has no goal other than that of being in the presence of God by praying the Scriptures.

Canticle of Mary (Magnificat) Luke 1:46-55

My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,my spirit rejoices in God my Savior

for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant.

From this day all generations will call me blessed:the Almighty has done great things for me,and holy is his Name.

He has mercy on those who fear himin every generation.

He has shown the strength of his arm,he has scattered the proud in their conceit.

He has cast down the mighty from their thrones, and has lifted up the lowly.

He has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent away empty.

He has come to the help of his servant Israelfor he has remembered his promise of mercy, the promise he made to our fathers,to Abraham and his children for ever.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit,as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.
