SURRY COUNTY SCHOOLS EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION Giving the Gift of Opportunity 2016 ANNUAL REPORT Message from the Chairperson Dear Foundation Friends, Calendar year 2016 was truly a year of commitment, hard work and success. The year began with a commitment to an Endowment Campaign to raise $500,000 in three years. In May, the Board celebrated seven new named endowments honoring families, educators, administrators and local businesses who have made significant contributions to education in Surry County. During 2016, the campaign reached 60% of the goal. In addition to the Endowment Campaign, the foundation held two major fund raising events; the 4th Annual Mad Dash 5K & Fun Run and the 6th Annual Academic Golf Classic. These two events plus the annual employee campaign raised $55,000. As the Foundation transitioned to a new Executive Director, Ashley Mills, a new record-keeping system was implemented to accommodate the Foundation’s growth and expansion, and has been found “in compliance” with all rules and regulations during the annual audit. Highlights of the year include accomplishments in the areas of arts, math and science. Many accomplishments were made through the Enhanced Learning Mini-Grant Program and the creative ideas of our classroom teachers. The Foundation Board of Directors is very proud of these accomplishments which have continued to receive local and state-wide recognition for excellence. On behalf of the Board of Directors, I want to express our deep and sincere gratitude to our students, teachers, administrators, and supporters who devote their talents and resources to make the Surry County School System one of the best in our region. As we go forward, the Foundation Board of Directors is fully committed to education and a high quality of living in Surry County. Brent McKinney Brent McKinney, right, with R. O. Giving the Gift of Opportunity

2016 ANNUAL REPORT

Message from the Chairperson

Dear Foundation Friends,

Calendar year 2016 was truly a year of

commitment, hard work and success. The year

began with a commitment to an Endowment

Campaign to raise $500,000 in three years. In

May, the Board celebrated seven new named

endowments honoring families, educators,

administrators and local businesses who have

made significant contributions to education in

Surry County. During 2016, the campaign

reached 60% of the goal.

In addition to the Endowment Campaign, the

foundation held two major fund raising events;

the 4th Annual Mad Dash 5K & Fun Run and the

6th Annual Academic Golf Classic. These two

events plus the annual employee campaign

raised $55,000. As the Foundation transitioned to

a new Executive Director, Ashley Mills, a new

record-keeping system was implemented to

accommodate the Foundation’s growth and

expansion, and has been found “in compliance”

with all rules and regulations during the annual

audit.

Highlights of the year include accomplishments

in the areas of arts, math and science. Many

accomplishments were made through the

Enhanced Learning Mini-Grant Program and the

creative ideas of our classroom teachers. The

Foundation Board of Directors is very proud of

these accomplishments which have continued to

receive local and state-wide recognition for

excellence.

On behalf of the Board of Directors, I want to

express our deep and sincere gratitude to our

students, teachers, administrators, and

supporters who devote their talents and

resources to make the Surry County School

System one of the best in our region.

As we go forward, the Foundation Board of

Directors is fully committed to education and a

high quality of living in Surry County.

Impacting the Lives of Students and Local Economy

The Surry County Schools Educational Foundation is a 501(c)(3) organization created by a group of

local business and community leaders who are passionate about the education and the future of

Surry County. The Board of Directors is committed to providing enhanced learning opportunities

for students that will position them to be ready to compete in a global market.

When an individual or a company invests in the Surry County Schools Educational Foundation, it

begins a cycle of direct and indirect benefits:

Monetary Investment

Provides enhanced learning opportunities

Better quality of education

Highly qualified & skilled workforce to market to industry

Attracts more industry—more jobs

Increased wages

Since 2011, the Foundation has given $250,000 to assist with

educational field trips, fund an Outdoor Education Center for the

district, provide defibrillators to ensure safety at all elementary

schools, and provide mini grants and STEMmersion opportunity

for teachers.

All of these educational investments have been made possible

through the generous donations of individuals, local businesses, and community groups who

believe a higher education impacts the local economy. Your investment in the students of Surry

County Schools will benefit local businesses with a highly qualified workforce.

Summer 2016 STEMmersion

Externship Program

The STEMmersion Externship Program provides

teachers in Surry County Schools the opportunity

to spend time in local businesses learning how

science, technology, engineering and math are

applied in real-world, authentic situations. The

project plan includes teachers who will spend

time in a local business seeing first-hand the

relationship between content and careers.

In addition, the teachers will collaborate with

other colleagues in post-externship

planning. This planning will be focused solely

on what was learned from the externships and

tied to the development of project-based learning

units.

One hundred percent of teachers polled indicate

that the externship program allows participants

to become more aware of local workforce needs.

The Surry County Schools Educational

Foundation budgets $6000 each year for this

program.
