By Peter GillieronClub President

The Club’s Annual General meeting was held in April 2010. Thank you to the members who attended for a summary of the

activities for the year ended 31 December 2009. The meeting noted that Rod Paterson would not offer himself for re-election, and congratulated Rod on his service as a Director over many years. Subsequent to the Meeting, the Board invited Andrew Sucevic to join as a Director. Andrew accepted and we have had the benefit of Andrew’s contributions to the Board’s discussions.

The Club conducted its Annual Under-Age Junior Tournament in the 1st week of the mid-year school holidays. The tournament was a success even though Tuesday was completely washed out. The draw had to be substantially revamped to ensure that the tournament was completed by the Friday. Thanks to Kane Dewhurst, Vince Dattoli and the team for VIDA for their preparation prior to, and the running of the tournament. The tournament was again strongly support by a loyal band of members and our thanks to those members listed in newsletter for their support.

Club members, their families and friends enjoyed a Trivia Night at the Club. All had a great evening and we raised some funds for the Club. The event followed the same format as the year before with a wide range of activities contributing to the score. We also took the opportunity to congratulate and award the winners and runners-up in the Club Championships.

I recall that the Club had its last working bee while it was being established at High Street Road. There will be another one held on Sunday 3rd October 2010 from 8.30am to 11.30am. The works will concentrate on clearing up the paths and garden beds adjoining courts 4 and 12. The area is looking quite untidy and the recent wet weather will help in removing the weeds and shrubs that are there. The area will be replanted during the

spring. Court 1 will be out of action for a few weeks for refurbishment in and around both baselines.

The Club Championships have been held. Thank you to all members who entered and went head-to-head with their fellow members in friendly combat. We acknowledge and congratulate Angelo Giampaolo and Emily Fanning as our respective Club Champions. Congratulations to the teams who reached the finals in the recent Tennis Victoria Winter Pennant Series. The teams for weekend summer competition have been selected and submitted to the respective district associations. Thanks to Andrew Semmens for his work in getting teams selected for competition play. The Club will be the host venue for the State Grade Final on Sunday 14 November 2010. Put that date in your diary to come down to watch some great tennis.

On a sobering note, a visiting pennant player from another club recently had her personal bag stolen from the clubhouse while she was in the clubhouse. It was a disappointing experience for our visitor and, unfortunately, a reminder for all us to keep a close watch on our personal belongings when at the club.

Thank-youTo the following members for their assistance with the Annual Under-Age.Lyn Carter, Mariann Coombe, Ainslie Cummins, Wendy Hyland, Rob Jamieson, Mary-Lou Kearney, Rosalind Nunn, Libby Kitchingman, Prue Ryan, Pat Seddon, Heather Semmens, John Semmens, Pat Sinclair

PersonalCongratulations to Kane Dewhurst and Tannaz on their recent marriage. We wish them both well on their future together.

Working BeeAt the Club on Sunday 3rd October 2010 from 8.30am to 11.30am. Please bring shovels, spades and working gloves. Contact Peter Gillieron on 0416 003 340 if you are able to attend so jobs can allocated.

WORKING BEE

Sunday 3rd October 2010 from 8.30 am - 11.30 am

Make a note in your diary now!

The 77th Glen Iris Underage Championships were held in the first week of the recent June / July holidays. This prestigious Tennis Australia OJT Gold level event attracted more than 500 players across all age groups in both boys and girls. The weather was not kind during the event with more than a day and a half of play lost to rain but by week’s end the event was completed.

It was great to see many club members and Vida players competing in the tournament and there were some fantastic efforts and results. Michaela Capannolo won the girls 16 singles defeating Annabelle Andrinopolous. Chase Ferguson was a semi finalist in the boys 12 singles, while Romy Stephens and Elle Fourlis were semi finals in the girls 14 singles.

Vida Tennis, on behalf of the Glen Iris Valley Tennis Club would like to thank all members for their support and allowing the full use of the venue and courts for the week. A big thank you goes out to those members who gave up their time to help in the kitchen and run a venue.

The annual TCAV Age Championships will be held at Glen Iris Valley in the upcoming school holidays from Saturday 18th September until Wednesday 22nd. There will be a member court available at all times. Please check with the tournament office upon your arrival to find out which court you can use.

TRIVIA NIGHTThe Club held its annual Trivia Night on Saturday 7th August hosted by Memorabilia Magic. There were five tables of players with the l’presidente team storming home to take the title by the narrowest margin. The night was a great night for more than 45 club members and friends who were able to win prizes & vouchers donated by local business. Memorabilia Magic supplied some great sporting, music & history framed memorabilia for silent auction which helped raise additional funds for the club.

The Club Championship trophies for 2010 were presented during the evening with Angelo Giampaolo, Edwin Soon, Emily Soon and Rosemary Interrigi all collecting their trophies.

A big thank you goes to Col from Memorabilia Magic for putting on a great social night for our club members and their friends. We also thank the Riversdale Hotel, Mt Waverley Chiropractic Centre, de barage hair, dhealth dental and Vida Tennis for donating prizes for the night.

As the Winter Season draws to a close it it is pleasing to note that GIVRC will be represented by 2 of the 4 teams involved with the Semi finals due to start on Aug.17th. Theses teams are A2 and A10. Best of luck to them. Due to dwindling numbers of ladies available to play mid week we have found it necessary to advertise through MEMRLTA for any interested players. Unfortunately ,to this time there has been no response so if you know of anyone who may be interested please ask them to contact me. On this very note however, it is very pleasing to welcome a brand new team of Mid week Ladies to our ranks following their introduction to tennis and the club by Vida, and the coaching crew.We hope you will all enjoy this new experience and the benefits which the club has to offer, and look forward to meeting you all when the new season begins. Thanks to AllMariann [email protected]
