CLA 194570-Year Honor Class

Class Presidents 70 years apart. Alexandria Dye (2015) and Larry Pumford (CLA 1945). Also pictured in the middle is Skip Hann, Director, Development/Alumni.

The “Ye Olde” CLA Re-union is something that I look forward to every year. Even though I graduated quite awhile after these alumni, I still enjoy the weekend fi lled with laughter, singing, friendship, and reminiscing. This reunion was started by Larry Pumford ‘45 and his classmates and meets every second week-end of June on the GLAA campus. They have com-pletely planned and ex-ecuted the event, with Skip Hann and I in a supporting role. However, this year there wasn’t anyone to take the lead, so we planned the event, not wanting to miss a year, es-pecially since this would be the 70th reunion of the class that started this special weekend. We extend a special

thanks to Larry Pumford (CLA ‘45) and his wife Flossie, Vivion Shull (CLA ‘45), Ralph Benedict (CLA ‘48). and Audley McDon-

ald (CLA ‘45) for being so willing to do anything we needed them for. The weekend was as much fun as ever!

Many other alumni par-ticipated and brought back the togetherness and memories of many happy times spent years

ago. Skip and I wondered where this reunion would go from here. Obviously we didn’t want it to stop, so Ralph Benedict called for volunteers to meet who were willing to commit to keeping this reunion going. There was a great re-sponse, and Marian (Gre-anya-Hart) Gay (CLA ‘54) agreed to head up the plan-ning group for next year.

So mark your calendars! The “Ye Olde” Reunion is still going strong and next year promises to be another wonderful time with all the 50-year graduates and older coming together to make memories again.

President’s MessageBy Todd Gardner (AA ‘85)

Jeremiah 29:11-13 (ERV) says “I say this because I know the plans that I have for you.” This message is from the Lord. “I have good plans for you. I don’t plan to hurt you. I plan to give you hope and a good future. Then you will call my name. You will come to me and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will search for me, and when you search for me with all your heart, you will fi nd me.

This is my favorite verse in the Bible for one primary reason. It clearly explains the relationship our heavenly father wants with each of us. You see, un-fortunately some people have a warped picture intheir minds of what God is like.

Some see a cruel and harsh God who takes twisted pleasure in destroying us. Others imagine a disin-terested God, too busy with other things than to be interested in the lives of such insignifi cant lifeforms. I am reminded of the prophets of Baal on Mount Car-mel who went so far as to even slit their wrists in an attempt to awaken the interests of their God.

Still others envision a manipulative God who uses people as pawns in a game for his amusement. Such an idea may be rooted perhaps in Greek mythology where gods envision earth as their playground - will-ingly destroying the lives of mere mortals simply for sport. The problem is we typically frame our view of God with our own experiences, and from our own vantage point. Unfortunately, some people have not had good parental examples and so the thought of a loving father fi gure is not comforting to them. Not everyone has a good vantage point from which to make an accurate assessment of what God is really like. But fortunately, this text makes it clear. He has plans for us. Good plans! He does not have plans to hurt us, but rather, plans to give us hope and a good future.

Sadly, God’s people had previously turned away from Him, losing the protection and blessings that naturally fl ow from a connection with the God of the Universe. This loss of blessing and protection is much the same as that of an independent crav-

ing teenager who chooses to leave home and fi nds no one is cooking, cleaning, and providing for their needs anymore. Sometime that teen may even fi nd a cruel world, ready to take ad-vantage of them. Although this Bible promise was to the Jewish people in Babylon thousands of years ago, we can be sure that his plans for His people have not changed from their original design.

Fortunately, just as the text explains in its continuation, our loving heavenly father is the same as any loving parent waiting for that phone call from the teen. This is a call that our father in heaven is more than willing to take and to act immediately upon.

Honestly, your Alumni team here at Great Lakes Ad-ventist Academy feels that same way towards you.

Regardless of if you have been away for 5 years or 50 years, we would be excited to have you back and to welcome you in a warm and genuine way. Come spend some time with friends, and with your family.

The wise king Solomon reminds us in Proverbs 18 that a true friend can be better than even our own brother. Rebuild those friendships. We are making great plans for you!!

Take time to call on Him today. You don’t need to have left home to make the call or redeem the prom-ise. After all, He has good plans for you. He wants to give you a home and a good future!

“A Future and a Hope!”

Uplifting Christ

Serving OthersPursuing Excellence

Dear Alumni and Friends, Great Lakes Adventist Academy has began a new school year and we are blessed to be serving 165 young people this year! One really cool dynamic is that several of our current students have parents that were here in the early 90’s when I fi rst came to GLAA--makes me feel old--and young! Collectively, our Michigan Conference acad-emies have been serving youngsters for over 100 years with quality education that is “distinctly Adventist and decid-edly academic.” Let me share a few things about GLAA that you might not be aware of: 1. We off er dual enrollment classes (for academy and college credit) of 17 credit hours in Science and History. 2. We have energetic and powerful music and gymnastics group that travel to all areas in Michigan, and well beyond, ministering to many people and letting God develop their talents for good. 3. We have a great work/study program featuring many diff erent job op-portunities so students can learn valuable work skills as well as help on their tuition costs. 4. We have developed a good program to assist our students that struggle academically to help them learn to manage their time wisely and provides tutoring for those that need it. 5. And, most importantly, we are very intentional in providing many areas to develop spiritual growth and leadership skills as they prepare for life beyond acad-emy. As we are in the beginning of the year, I am again reminded of how our alumni and friends continue to make it possible for our school to continue to provide necessary funds to the many families that need fi nancial assistance. Th ank you so much! We have many ongoing needs and areas on our campus to keep up on, Worthy Student funds, capital needs, and most importantly, your prayers and encouragement. (Deuteronomy 15:10, 11) Our adminstration and staff love our “jobs” and I’m asking all of you to again partner with us to help keep these awesome young people headed on the path to Heaven!

Alumni News CLA 1945

We, the members of the Class of 1945, are grate-ful to be alumni of Cedar Lake Academy. From many of our classmates we have heard this sentiment: “Th ose were among our fi nest years.” Our four years saw the beginning and ending of World War II. Times were not easy, funds were scarce and we remember the sacrifi ces made. Today, as we look back 70 years ago, we are so grateful to God for the school we knew and loved--Cedar Lake Academy. It was in 1983 that we decided to reunite at our Alma Mater for a 40-year reunion. Where would we fi nd our classmates? Some were on the west coast, oth-ers in the east and still others in the south. Of course, Michigan was home to several. Th ere were eighteen of the original thirty-two members, plus their spouses that were able to gather at Cedar Lake Academy for our reunion in June of 1985. Th at was a joyous experience! After 40 years, none of us looked as we did in 1945 (an understatement), but our voices, mannerisms, and what each remembered were a dead giveaway. We wondered why we waited 40 years! It was so delightful we decided then that we should meet again in 5 years--1990. So we did, and again in 1995 for our 50th. It was at that time we decided to include all those who attended CLA in the 1940’s, after which was born the “Ye Olde” CLA Re-union for those graduating 50 years or more ago. Our reunions have been a source of encourage-ment to many. We talked about the blessings that have been ours as we reviewed the help and infl uence our teachers have had in our lives. Our gatherings gave us opportunity to remember that we could be helpful in lift-ing the fi nancial burdens of students in need today. Of course, our memories of school life in the long ago have been told and re-told and these have made our spirits bright! Th e class of 1945 has been in communication with each other since 1985. Each year we send out a bulletin with up to date addresses, phone numbers, and pertinent information just to keep in touch. We have been saddened for the loss of many who have fallen asleep in death, but we look forward to the great reunion when our Lord returns!
