3 TheNorthCascadesarehometothemostglacialmassesinthelowerforty eightstates.ThispartoftheworldisGodscountry;thesheerbeautyofthe landscapeisbreathtaking.Mostofthebeautyofthislandhasbeentouched byice.TheNorthCascadessitin thenorthernmostpartof WashingtonState.Thisregionis filledwithcountlesscanyons andcirques,cliffsandknobs. WithintheCascadesliefive activevolcanoesthattowerover12,000feetabovethevalleyfloor.The tallestnon-volcanicpeakisover9,000feet.Thismassiveareaisprimefor thebuildingoficeandsnow,keyingredientsinglacialformation. WashingtonStateisanexcellentplacetofindglaciersastherelativelywarm climateandabundantsnowfallexceedsthelossofsnowduetosummermelt. SomethemountainsinWashingtonthatyouwillfindglaciersareMount Rainier,MountBaker,GlacierPeak,andMountOlympus. Atthehighendofwheremoresnowaccumulatesthanislostiscalledthe accumulationzonethiswhereglaciersarecomposedoffallensnowthatis compressedaftermanyyearsinthickicemassesandformwhensnowstays inonelocationlongenoughtobetransformedintoice.Glacierswillform wheretheyearlysnowfallismorethanthelossofsnow.Everyyearnew layersofsnowcoverthepreviousyearsfalls;thecompressionforcessnowto recrystallize,forminggrainsthesizeofsugar.Slowlythegrainsgrowlarger
