After the cold and dreary days of winter, all of us will be happy to celebrate the arrival of spring. The English poet Wordsworth inspires us with these lines from ―Daffodils‖: I WANDER’D lonely as a cloud That floats on high o’er vales and hills, When all at once I saw a crowd, A host, of golden daffodils; Beside the lake, beneath the trees, Fluttering and dancing in the breeze. Tina Combs and I participated in the Lobby Day on February 1st in Frankfort. In February, our Public Rela- tions Committee, chaired by Lisa Simpson-Strange had an outstanding program. Our speaker, Rachel Walston, spoke to the members on the ―Care and Feeding of your Media Friends‖. Tina Combs and Krissie Coe Fields partici- pated in the Professional De- velopment speak-off with Tina Combs taking top honors. It was powerful and the compe- tition was very strong. Tina will represent us at Regional. I want to thank all 45 Glasgow B&PW members who at- tended the third Women’s Conference. It was a great day of fellowship and net- working. Also, I want to thank Diana Hatcher and Rogers & Driver Attorneys At Law for sponsoring the red scarves for the 45 ladies who at- tended the conference. We look forward to all the activities that Cathy, Dawn, and Sue are planning for the Kentucky Professional Women’s Month. BPW MARCH MADNESS/KPWM

This year we will be kicking off Kentucky Professional Women’s Month on Thursday,

March 1, 2012 at our regular monthly meeting. The following awards will be presented:

Woman of Achievement, Woman of the Year & Business Equity. We will be having the

Aspiring Professional Speak-off. Schedule of events for the month long celebration:

March 1 WCLU will run spots highlighting B&PW members all month!

March 3 Bowl for Kids Sake

March 8 Imaginary Workshop at Bistro

March 15 Bunko at George J’s

March 22 Movie Night — To be announced later

March 29 Cooking School at Barren County Extension Office

If you are at all events, your name will be enter into a drawing at April’s Meeting.

member Violet Clark for facili-

tating our trip to Frankfort.

The day at our Capitol was

spent listening to Committee

Health & Welfare approving

bills or tabling them. Senator

Julie Denton Chairs the Com-

mittee, Senator David Givens

is Vice-Chair of the Committee

and was gracious enough to

speak with us a few minutes.

He commended Barren

County’s Medical Care and Dr.

Mody for doing such great

work in the community.

Then it was lunch in the Capi-

tol’s cafeteria, and then we

headed to the, House of Rep-

resentatives after a stop at the

beautiful Rotunda. The House

ASPIRING PROFESSIONAL PROGRAM

Glasgow B&PW is proud

to present the Aspiring

Professional Program in

conjunction with Kentucky

Federation Business and

Professional Women’s

Week. Aspiring Profes-

sional candidates must be

less than 41 years of age,

have at least one year of

full time work experience,

and living or working in our

local area. A candidate

must also support the

B&PW mission, vision and

legislative platform.

The Speak-off portion will

be held during our March

1st meeting. Each candi-

date will present a four min-

ute speech on a chosen

topic, as well as complete a

written application and a

personal interview. This is a

challenging professional

growth experience and a

wonderful way for us to

support our own Aspiring

Professionals. Stacy Janes,

Courtney Benefield, and

Amanda Spradlin will be

participating in the Aspiring

Professional Speak-off.

Featuring Debra McCandless and Sherrie Burgess

Debbie McCandless is a preschool teacher at

Glasgow Christian Academy. Prior to teaching at

GCA, she was an Early Childhood and Family

Literacy Instructor and Program Coordinator with

the Barren County Migrant Education Even Start

Program, a literacy coach and mentor, and a pre-

school instructor with the Head Start Program.

Debbie has been a member of the Glasgow Busi-

ness and Professional Women’s Club since

November 2007. She has served as the Mentoring

Program Chair and is currently serving as the

Recording Secretary.

Debbie is a graduate of Bowling Green High and

Western Kentucky University with a Bachelor’s

Degree in Library Media and in Early Childhood

Development and a minor in Consumer and Fam-

ily Service.

Debbie is married to Clint McCandless and has

two children, B.C and Sarah. She enjoys partici-

pating in community activities and programs

such as the Visions Program, The Boys and Girls

Club, and Relay For Life. Her hobbies and inter-

ests include reading, creative writing, art, music,

movies, boating, swimming, traveling, and

spending time with family and friends.

Sherrie Burgess is currently serving the Glasgow

Business and Professional Women’s Club as Presi-

dent-Elect. She has been involved in BPW since

1994. As an active member of BPW she has served

in many capacities: Secretary, President-elect and

President of the Kay Bledsoe B&PW Club and as

Treasurer of the Glasgow Club. She has served as

Assistant Regional Director for two years and Re-

gional Director for 1 year. She has served as state

chair for the former Young Careerist program for 2

years and helped to spear-head the organization of

the WKU-Glasgow Campus student club.

This is her sixth year at Barren County High School.

She is employed as administrative assistant to the

guidance counselors. There are four counselors so

there is never a dull moment! During her employ-

ment career she has worked as a Human Resources

Manager, Office Manager, Personnel Secretary, Ac-

counts Payable Clerk...just to name a few.

Sherrie is married to Mike for almost 28 years and

reside in the Austin area for that period of time.

They have no children but love their animals! They

have 2 dogs and 1 cat. In her spare time she likes to

read, work on her scrapbooks, and crochet.

She says, “I have truly enjoyed my time spent in

BPW. Your BPW experience is what you make it. If

you attend regional and state meetings you open

yourself up to more knowledge and more friend-

ships. The more involved that you get the more you

get back in return. It truly is a labor of love.
