Independent Record Label
Glassnote Records
The record label describes itself as a full service independent music company, however it doesn’t own its recording studio. An
example of one of their artists outsourcing a studio is Childish Gambino who recorded his highest selling album ‘Because the
Internet’ in Chris Bosh’s mansion (NBA player), who he rented for $45,000 a month with his friends. Glassnote Records is extremely
happy to nurture and care for its artists as well as being passionate about making music as proven by this statement on
their website:
‘When building Glassnote, Daniel Glass constructed the Team using the same philosophies that he uses to find musical talent. Each member of the Glassnote Team has a passion for music, an understanding of the evolving industry, and the work ethic to grow the label and its artists.’
Genre/AudienceThe genre of music that Glassnote Records specialises in are indie rock and alternative rock music forms. Some examples of well known artists of this genre signed to them are Mumford & Sons, Two Door Cinema Club and The Temper Trap. It’s music is generally targeted to younger audiences which is shown by it’s interconnectivity
with social media. Their website allows users to track when their artists are performing near them next and also how to buy tickets if they are available. Also, there are embedded YouTube music videos into the page
which shows a further use of social media to target younger audiences.
Glassnote Records was founded by Daniel Glass, one of the most
respected and accomplished people in the music industry. The label is
fairly independent however it outsources distribution for many of
its artists and also outsources top tier producers. There are no parent
companies or groups/federations involved with this independent record label. The distributing
company they use is Universal Music Group. There are 26 artists signed to Glassnote Records and including the
founder they hire 28 workers.
Exchange
• Their artist’s music can be bought from iTunes online, ordered online from Amazon and also bought in physical CD copies in shops. None of their music is sold directly from the company as all their distribution is outsourced to UMG.• Additionally, the company sells no merchandise on
their website and this is all down to the bands themselves. Also, they do not organise the bands tours or shows so this is mainly down to either the bands themselves or outsourced management companies.
