Biography – Erin Pell
Glassy-Eyed Beads
I have been working with glass since 1999. I began studying glass
blowing with Mark Chapman in Palm Springs, California, while working with
Mark I began playing around with a torch and started making glass beads.
When I had my children I focused solely on making glass beads and pendants.
Her pieces of wearable art glass have been sold through galleries throughout
Canada and into the USA.
I was born in New Brunswick, but grew up mainly in the Muskoka area of
Ontario. I have also lived in Oaxaca and Jalisco, Mexico; Porvoo, Finland;
California and New Hampshire, USA. And since 2007 I have been based in
Saskatchewan, Canada.
Since both my parents were professional fine crafts people, I grew up at
craft shows (slept under the table at my first one when I was 2 months old) and
was exposed to many, many different mediums and styles of art and craft. I
knew since very early that the arts and making were my calling in life. When it
comes down to it, I need to create.
Lampworking – Flameworking
I use a technique called lampworking to
create my little pieces of art glass.
Lampworking or flameworking as it is
sometimes called is the process of melting
glass rods in the flame of a torch to the point
where they are soft enough to sculpt into the
design I want. I can layer different colours to
get different patterns as well as using thin
glass rods, called stringers, to “paint” the
design onto the bead or pendant. Most of
my work is down freehand (which means I use
no mandrel to make a hole for the bead) at
the end of a glass rod (see the picture to the
right). I don’t use any molds or presses to do
my work which means that no two pieces are
exactly alike, though may be similar in design.
All my glass is annealed for strength, and is
checked before selling for any flaws. I take
great pride in the quality and originality of my
work.
