  • Dear Friends, Welcome to the Glen Cove Downtown Business Improvement District’s Downtown Sounds Concert Series. This year marks the 17th anniversary of our Business Improvement District (BID) members and executive director have provided music for our ears. Each concert in this series is made possible through the tireless efforts of the BID staff and volunteers. The City of Glen Cove is truly fortunate to have consistent support from generous benefactors who have contributed and guaranteed the popular, free concert series endures. There’s nothing like enjoying a Friday night in the summer, relaxing outdoors in Village Square and listening to live music. This year’s Downtown Sounds series includes the music of Chicken-head, Times Ten, Marvin Floyd, Strawberry Fields, Good Vibrations, Richie Cannata, Decadia, The Meditations and Soul Sound Revue. I would like the thank the Glen Cove Downtown Busi-ness Improvement District, its Executive Directors, Francine Koehler, the volunteers, and this years’s sponsors. Everyone sit back, and enjoy the sounds in our downtown. Sincerely, Reginald A. Spinello Mayor

Over the course of seventeen years, Downtown Sounds has gone through a few incarnations. Through those changes we had one constantly enthusiastic fan: Nick DiLeo. Nick served as a councilman, Downtown B.I.D. board member, was a local businessman, was an avid music fan and a musician himself. Nick and his wife, Debbie, brought their entire family to every concert and they have grown along with the Downtown Sounds: We now can claim his grandchildren as fans! We at Downtown Sounds and the Downtown B.I.D. will miss Nick sorely after his un-timely passing earlier this year. Another familiar face in Glen Cove and at many Downtown Sounds concerts was Lt. Rod Bruschini, who also passed away suddenly this year. As an officer in the

Glen Cove Police Department, Lt. Bruschini interacted with us on community events and provided guidance on security and logistics. Again, Glen Cove has lost a good man. Therefore we are proud to dedicate this year’s Downtown Sounds concert series to Nick DiLeo and Lt. Rod Bruschini and their families. We warmly thank Mayor Reginald Spinello and the Glen Cove City Council as well as our generous and loyal sponsors for giving us the ability to grow and improve each year. Assisting us in this endeavor, Down-town Sounds is fortunate to have the guidance of music and recording greats to advise us. And the Down-town Sounds Committee has worked throughout the year to produce a fabulous 2014 concert series. Our audiences provide the energy that keeps downtown Glen Cove vibrant. Summer equals fun, and downtown Glen Cove is at the heart of it. Whether simply relaxing or kicking off a party weekend, downtown Glen Cove is a great place to start. Please come and sample all the great things Glen Cove offers. The only Long Island Sound is Downtown Sounds! Francine Koehler, Executive Director, Glen Cove Downtown BID

  • July 11 Marvin Floyd

Marvin Douglas Floyd was born and grew

up in Long Island New York. He began playing

the organ at the age of six after being inspired

by his older brothers who were also in the

music field. Music was something that was

always encouraged in his home. By the age of

12, he was in his first band. As a teenager he

started writing and composing music, and

    found himself frequenting local recording

studios. He was hired by an independent label

I.M.G. Records to track, duplicate and write

music for that label. After working there for

several months, he knew this was the area

that he wanted to pursue and decided to open

his own recording studio, Nivram Productions,

in downtown Glen Cove. It was here he had the opportunity to hone his skills

and work with others. Soon his reputation for writing, composing and producing

music began to grow and earned him a house hold name.

Marvin Floyd became a local favorite for his style of playing and soon he

would be in the company of such legends as Clark Terry, Quincy Jones, Al

Jarrea, Michael Jackson. Keeping company with theses greats influenced

    Marvin’s style of playing.

Hop princess and Actress Ashanti Marvin produced and co-wrote two (2)

songs for the Life Time Movie “Christmas in the city” along with a Christmas Cd .

  • July 18 Leslie Zimei and the Pearl Street Band

Leslie Zimei and the "Pearl Street Band" have performed Long Island and NYC venues for the last 10 years encom-passing a repertoire of R & B, Blues and Jazz. Featuring a solid, talented three piece horn section, four piece rhythm section and versatile vocalists, "Miss Leslie” personalizes each song with her own sultry, soulful versions. Recently recorded CD "Black and White" has all the elements of the influences that ignited Leslie's musical ambitions several years ago including; Sinatra, Nancy Wilson, The Beatles, Dusty Springfield and Bonnie Raitt. The CD is bolstered by the best musicians in the New York area including Lou Marini (Tenor sax-Blues Brothers, Saturday Night Live, James Taylor), Glenn Drewes (Sinatra, Aretha, currently in the Broadway hit "Chicago" first trumpet chair), Tony Tedesco (drums, John Pizzelli) to name a few. Expected to be released July 10, 2014 "Black and White" is an eight month production of multi-talented players, including arranger Mike Mattia.

The fact is, I have no credits to speak of or any great musical achievements but, I do have a wife that goes above and beyond for me, a family that I love, and friends that care… I am blessed. Then of course, there is my music. It has provided me with a good living and a great sense of pride but, my true passion is writing. I have been lucky enough to work with some gifted songwriters who taught me the craft of storytelling thru song. I was doing what I loved. The world was good, very good.

Then life does what life does. In 2007, I was diagnosed with cancer. Having limited options, it was a real moment of pause but, with a positive outlook, a great support team and my trust in God, I channeled my energy into the creative process. At first, it was to help me heal. Then I realized these songs might connect with an audience. Working with some of the best musicians and singers in the industry, I was able to fulfill a lifelong dream, to write, sing, and co-produce my own record. Now when someone asks, what my inspiration for this album was, I simply say… it’s called Story 7 and I’m glad to be here.

    Thanks for listening,

    Lou Coppola

  • July 25 Strawberry Fields

In 1964, the first US arrival of four lads from Liverpool changed the course of music history, as well as world history - forever! Their mere presence in a room made adolescent hearts throb and traffic jam for hours in every major city they toured. We are talking about none other than The Beatles, whose contribution to music defined an era. They affected every area of life including fashion, hairstyles, politics, protests, war, religion, and yes, peace and love. Most of us never got to see the Beatles in-person because we either couldn't afford to buy tick-ets, or were just too young to stay out past 8 pm, but we were able to cling to an old album cover or photograph, hoping one day to catch a real glimpse of the Fab Four. Well, today, "Strawberry Fields" is here, a look-alike, sound-alike Beatles tribute, dedicated to bringing you, the audience, as close to a real Beatles concert as you can get. The band features true look-alike performers, handpicked from hundreds of auditionees, who speak in Liverpudlian accents and play on the vintage musical instruments that Beatles fans have come to recognize. "Strawberry Fields" will take you on a Magical Mystery Tour through the 1960s beginning with the year 1964 - complete with mop top hair, black suits and thin ties - and through the first four al-bums of great songs. Our next stop is 1967, featuring the psychedelic era of the "Sergeant Pep-per's Lonely Hearts Club Band" album - with all of the costumes and jackets featured on the album cover, and singing all of your groovy favorites. Our last musical visit is to a place where their hair got longer and their music more politically involved, featuring music from the "White Album," "Abbey Road," and "Let It Be." "Strawberry Fields" has been performing to audiences of all ages for over a decade and in the past has shared the stage with featured guests from the Broadway cast of "Beatlemania;" Steve Holly, drummer for Paul McCartney who was featured on his second solo album, "Back To The Egg;" Billy J. Kramer (one of Brian Epstein's original British Invasion stars); Tony Sheridan, who recorded an entire album with The Beatles, themselves; and Pete Best, who (in case you've been living under a rock for all these years) was, early in their careers, the drummer of The Beatles! We have enjoyed many press reviews from several acclaimed journals and raves from fans eve-rywhere. We've most recently performed an exclusive engagement for "EMI" at "Ruby Foo's" in NYC, not to mention our one-time-only recreation of The Beatles' historic 1965 concert at Shea Stadium - Shea Stadium! Wow!

Born and raised in Brooklyn and Long Island, this New Yorker has a terminal infection of music cours-ing through his veins and he has been spreading it where ever he goes. His captivating saxophone style can be heard on hundreds of millions of records around the world. Richie is featured as the original sax / keyboard player on Billy Joel’s major records and touring shows. Richie often returns to perform on stage with Billy Joel, recently on the New Years Eve 2000 Millennium Show at Madi-son Square Garden along with a 12 show run in 2006. During the mid 1990’s Richie toured with the Beach Boys. In his experience with them he also worked with John Stamos, as he and the Beach Boys would appear on the hit sitcom “Full House” together. “John Stamos

was always fun and made my performances memorable,” Cannata stated. “The best episode for me was with Little Richard, but then again all the episodes were fantastic.” He recently also contributed to Brian Wilson’s new CD. Richie is not only a professional musician but also a much producer. He has produced albums for Phoebe Snow, Rita Coolidge, Corey Hart and Tommy Shaw. Cove City Sound Studios is also a favorite for major headliner names to record their upcoming music. One of the most recent was Jennifer Lopez for her hit song, “On the Floor.” Richie’s musical work can also be heard in the motion pictures “Remo Williams - The Adventure Begins” and “Slaves of New York.” All of Richie’s extensive work behind the scenes in music lead him to open “Cove City Sound Studios” in the early 1980’s. This is a state of the art recording studio in Glen Cove, NY. Richie currently is working on many production projects at Cove City Sound Studios, in addition to host-ing Monday Night Jams at the Bitter End. He also in the musical director of former New York Yankee and Latin Grammy nominated jazz artist, Bernie Williams and his band. Most recently, Cannata has been supporting major acts around the East Coast, including Al Jardine of The Beach Boys, Mike DelGuidice and Big Shot, and renowned jazz guitarist Chieli Minucci. In 2011 Richie released his debut solo album titled, “Richie Cannata” sold online now. “Being the owner of Cove City Sound Studios I never had the chance to get into my own studio and record a CD. This year I did and results have been awesome. I would love it if people would support this live music so we can play shows throughout the world and make another in CD in the future.” To pick up your copy visit Itunes. • August 15 The Meditations feat. Ansel Cridland / Roots Revelators

The Meditations - Ansel Cridland, Danny Clarke and Winston Watson collectively known as The Meditations, recorded their first hit single Woman is Like a Shadow in 1974 at Channel One Recording Studio. The group made its mark and sealed their place as reggae legends with the release of the first two albums Message From The Meditations and Wake Up pro-duced by Dobby Dobson. Soon after came the third album Guidance produced by Ansel Cridland. Known the world over as Jamaica’s legendary harmony trio, The Meditations captured the hearts of reggae fans around the world. This led to collaborations with Lee Scratch Perry. Scratch, who produced for Bob Marley and the Wailers, asked them to do backup vocals for Punky Reggae Party, featuring Bob on led vocals. Bob Marley was so pleased with their harmony that he went in search for the group to do more backup vocals for him. It is said by many that “The Meditation is Bob Marley’s favorite group,” which led to Bob re-questing harmony and background vocals on songs like Rastaman Live Up and Blackman Redemption. The Meditations harmonic vocals can be heard on some of your favorite track such as, Bongo Man, Youths Them A Cry by Jimmy Cliffs, Mr. Cop by Gregory Isaacs, to name a few. In 1983 Linval Thompson produced The Meditations fourth album No More Friends. On this album all the lead vocals were sung by Ansel Cridland. Meanwhile Danny Clarke and Winston Watson later released For The Good Of Man. After some time separated Ansel begin to put the group back together with the release of Return Of The Meditations pro-duced by Ansel in 1993 on Heartbeat record label. Ansel followed up producing and releasing Ghetto Knowledge on the Easy Star label in 1999, then Stand In Love on his own label Meditations Music in 2004. As of late he has gone on to collaborate with yet another great Philip Smart for his latest album Dangerous Society, which was released jointly by Meditations Music and Philip Smart in 2011. Ansel is a dedicated musician writing, producing and releasing albums, and still touring with the addi-tion of DaddyLion Chandell and Toussaint Webb on harmony.
