Glendenning Public School Safe, Respectful Learners Term 2, Week 5 Thursday, May 29, 2014 Dear parents, Walkathon Sponsorship – Just a reminder that the more sponsors students can get, the more chance they have of winning a major prize in the Walkathon. Thank you to all parents and students who are doing their very best to help our school with the gaining of sponsors. Walkathon Sausage Sizzle – The Walkathon is our major fundraiser for 2014. At Glendenning PS we ask that parents – each year – support the school by purchasing a resource pack and that families help by supporting the major fundraiser – this year the Walkathon. As part of the fundraiser, teachers have been organising a sausage sizzle. The P&C helpers have been kind enough to offer their support as well. The sausage sizzle and drink costs $5. It has been brought to my attention that this lunch/snack is not ‘value for money’ and therefore a number of parents will not be supporting the sausage sizzle. GPS is not endeavouring to go into competition with McDonald’s, KFC, Quix or any other fast food company – it was a simple way of raising funds and having the students share in a ‘fun’ lunch. It is disappointing that a number of parents have deliberately chosen not to support the school but I acknowledge their right to take this step. I would, however, like to think that the great majority of parents would support the activity as it is their children who will benefit. I would also like to invite any and all parents who believe that they can assist to improve our fundraising to come along to the next P&C and put their ideas and possible assistance forward to help with next year’s fundraiser, in the hope that we will be able to engender a greater community spirit and support for the school. Glendenning PS is here to serve your children and your families – please try to see your way clear to support the school in doing its job better! Cross Country Squad – On Wednesday May 28, our school was represented by a group of 32 students. They were: Jwakeem HapeVa’a, Jayden Miller, Hayden Mackay, Riley Butcher, Jason Skelton, Kye Eldridge, Brayden Plackett Collenette, Brooke Hansen, Kayla Coss, Sienna Cardona, Dakota Gleeson, Parleen Gill, Chloe Ryan, Krishna Cereno, Jasmine Saraceno, Alexis Zammit, Julian Cane, Kayhan Najib, Ryan Steele, Jack Travis, Emran Shevket, Danniel Pamploma, Elijah Hansraj, Mackenzie Brown, Allyssa Jose, Charlene Gervacio, Sydney Misa, Nikie RyanSteele, Ashley Gaundar, Sarah Monteverde, Jessica Mackander, Luke Wilson. Their results will be placed in next week’s newsletter. Dental Health Checks – These were conducted on Tuesday May 27. Over 200 students had their teeth checked. Once again, the students were a credit to the school and their families – the dental team commented on their excellent behaviour and good manners. StudentLearning Conferences – a note about these is accompanying this newsletter. Please complete and return it as soon as possible so that you can secure your preferred time. DEC Learn to Swim program – Our school has now been allocated dates for this program. It will be held in Term 3, Weeks 3 and 4 – Monday July 28 until Friday August 8 inclusive. Notes about this very important program will be sent out by the end of this term. Priority is given to students in Year 2 or 3 who have not yet achieved a basic level of competency and confidence in swimming – given the number of activities in Australia that occur on or near water, all students who meet the criteria are strongly urged to participate. Any additional places will be offered to students in Years 4, 5 or 6. D. Meaney 135 Armitage Drive, Glendenning. NSW. 2761 Ph: 9832 8555 Fax: 98329724 E: glendennin[email protected]

PBL GOAL SHEETS

Students are given the opportunity to show parents/carers, their progress on achieving their PBL goals. The

PBL goals are specific to each stage, and develop in complexity as a student progresses from Kindergarten

to Year 6.

The goals relate to our three school values, Safe, Respectful and Learner. Students are shown these goal

sheets, and together with PBL posters in the classroom, learn to display these values.

A photocopy will be sent home with Semester 1 reports, to give you an update on their achievements so

far. During the Student Learning Conferences in week 8, you will also have an opportunity to discuss your

child’s attainment of these goals thus far. At the end of the year, the original document will be sent home

with your child’s report.

During Semester 2, students who are recorded by their teacher as having ‘Displayed’ ALL of the goals, AND

have had only ‘a couple’ of time‐outs/incidents, will receive our new Griffin Reward. Please see below

regarding number of time‐out/incidents permitted.

Grade  Time‐Outs  (classroom)

Playground Incidents (minor)

Playground Incidents (major)

K and Yr 1  0 – 4   0 – 4  0

2 and 3  0 – 3  0 – 3  0

4, 5 and 6  0 – 2   0 – 2   0

Whilst most students are rewarded with Monday morning assembly awards, K‐2/3‐6 assembly awards,

‘Caught you Being’ tokens etc., our Griffin Rewards will be used to acknowledge those students who

consistently demonstrate and uphold our school values over an extended period of time. We understand

that this will mean that some students miss out, but we hope that by setting clear expectations and

supporting our students, they will be able to achieve their PBL goals the following year. It is a great honour

to receive this acknowledgement, and we look forward to presenting our Griffin Rewards at the end of

2014.

Griffin Rewards are a new system that is commencing this year. The Griffin Rewards are replacing our

previous Citizenship Badges. The decision to end these badges was made last year by the PBL team.

We are very excited to reveal the new Glendenning Griffin and our rewards. We are just waiting for the

final touches before sharing with the community.

The PBL Team welcomes any parent or carer feedback regarding PBL. Please don’t hesitate to contact the

school if you would like to make any suggestions or comments.

Thank you for your ongoing support,

Miss Howard and the PBL Team
