Principal’s Message Dear parents, I will cover a number of things in this newsletter - should you have any questions about any of them, please contact the school to speak to myself or Miss Rox and we will do our best to assist. ‘Among Us’ is yet another game played on digital devices. One of our kindergarten teachers had children draw their favourite things this week. Some students drew characters from ‘Among Us’. On Wednesday I had a number of students (Yrs 3 & 4) ask me if they could play ‘Among Us’ in the playground. The game is obviously welcoming to younger students. If teachers taught students to play games involving killing other students parents would quite rightly get very angry - and I would not blame them. The ‘Among Us’ game is all about a situation where an unknown member of a space team goes around killing the others on the team. I haven’t played it but it sounds like a ‘childhood ‘Aliens’’ game. Parents, please ensure you supervise what games your children play as adult concepts in children’s games could possibly cause irreparable emotional damage. Students and Valuables- Students should not bring valuables to school - especially treasured family heirlooms. We cannot guarantee the safety of any valuables at school and we are not able to provide any compensation under normal conditions. Students who bring expensive watches or phones need to care for those valuables - it is not the teacher’s responsibility to do that. Welcome to our Newly-elected P&C Committee - Firstly, a big thank you to the outgoing President Mrs Vorobieff - her dedication to the P&C and through it the families, students and staff at our school was outstanding. Congratulations to all members of the new executive - the election results showing those elected and those who will assist them are: Glendenning Public School Safe, Respectful Learners Term 1 Week 4 Thursday 18 February, 2021 135 Armitage Drive, Glendenning NSW 2761 E: [email protected] Ph: 9832 8555 Fax: 9832 9724 Position Name (Assistants) President Sue Hansen Vice Pres Shifa David Vice Pres Kylie Moylan Secretary Olivia Harvey Treasurer Sally Edmunds Auditor John Stafford

I wish the newly-elected committee a very successful and enjoyable year! Covid Testing Dear Parents, please see below to clarify what needs to happen if students are exhibiting cold or flu-like symptoms. This is taken directly from the updates sent to schools by the Department of Education. Clarification for schools - identifying and responding to unwell students. Students and staff must not attend school or work if they are unwell, even with the mildness of symptoms including fever, cough, sore throat, shortness of breath, loss of taste, and loss of smell. Students need to be symptom free and a negative COVID-19 test result must be received and sighted by the school prior to their return to school. Students who do not undertake a COVID-19 test are not permitted to return to school for a 10 day period and they must be symptom free for at least 3 days prior to their return. Students who have seasonal allergic rhinitis or another condition that presents similarly to flu-like symptoms are still required to get tested for COVID-19 and return a negative test result. Where their symptoms continue beyond 10 days, students should provide documentation from their GP confirming their symptoms are typical for their condition. School Camps - As all parents know, over many years we have been able to run a very successful ‘camping’ program for students in Yrs 2 to 6. In Yr 2 we have our sleepover at school and Yrs 3-6 have normally travelled to various venues to see and do many activities we could not provide for them at school. With the drop in our student numbers it will be hard for us to continue these programs - but we are going to try! We are also aware that some parents do not like the thought of their children being away from home and I can only add that we always ensure the best safety and supervision standards we possibly can. In 2021, all parents will be asked to pay a $20 deposit to show they intend for their child to attend their camp. Please understand that as excursions are organised for the most affordable cost possible, if we do not get the minimum number of students then the total cost will not be able to be covered and the camp will be cancelled. If this does happen, anyone who has paid the $20 will have that amount credited to any future excursions or school activities. School Disco - The school student discos are currently being coordinated. In the past we had these after school. Students will now have their discos during the normal school day. Students will be able to come to school in their disco clothes. As part of the disco experience they will all receive a piece of fruit and a glow product. We ask that all students donate $1 towards entry to the disco. There will be photos taken and parents will be able to see them! More on the disco arrangements later but I hope parents can see that no student is missing out on any activities as a result of some of the guidelines we now have to follow. Our Last Monday Morning Assembly - Our last Monday morning assembly went very well. Although we did not have any parents in the school, the data from our site shows that there were over 630 views of the assembly with 54 likes. Thank you to Miss Milledge and the Digitech team for all of the superb work they do ‘taking the school into the community.’ Meet-the-Teacher Notes - These invitations will be sent home very soon. The meetings will be in the hall. The meetings will consist of presentations by each of the teachers. Please understand that there will NOT be an opportunity for parents to have individual discussions with teachers. This is a general information session. If you want to meet your child’s teacher individually or have a phone interview, please contact the school. The School Canteen - The school canteen is not open. The process for re-starting the school canteen consists of forming a committee and then organising through the department’s Assets Management Unit to place a tender notice in various newspapers. Interested parties then respond to the tender application and submit their offers. A panel of school representatives and an Assets Officer then choose the best tender and proceed to establish a contract and, eventually, open the canteen. During the learning-from-home time many school canteens had to close

to avoid financial problems. It would appear that until our economy begins to get ‘back on its feet’, seeking new people to run the canteen might be difficult. The school does provide lunches to any students who don’t have one, so all students do get access to food during the day. Zoo Excursions - next week, Yrs 5 & 6 students will have their zoo excursion on Thursday and Yrs 3 & 4 will go to the zoo on Friday. Has your child returned notes? - Earlier this year all students took home notes about:

● Online Communication Services, Photograph, Video etc ● Personal Development Health and Physical Education ● Learning Resource Packs

If your child hasn’t returned any of these, please help us to help your child by having them return them asap. What’s Happened in the Playground? - During the recent school holidays we have had continuation of ground improvements. Below are some photos of student gardens, the chicken coop, improvements at the rear of the library, the outdoor teaching area and the new aviary. Enjoy! Have a good week, Doug Meaney Principal

Principal’s Gold and Silver Awards

Principal’s Silver and Gold awards have commenced. Students need to have 5 awards from the ‘Accepted’ list, to receive a

Silver award. Once students have 3 Silver awards, they can hand these in to receive a Gold award (every Gold award comes

with a gold star patch).

Students are to hand in their awards to the office. Once processed, awards are returned to students, signed and initialled by a

teacher. Awards can only be used once.

Silver awards are handed out on a weekly basis, during Monday morning assembly.

Gold awards will be handed out during Week 8 Monday morning assembly, each term.

5 awards = 1 Silver

3 Silver awards = 1 Gold

Please note that awards will be processed on Monday mornings. Any awards received after this time will be processed the

following week.

If parents or students have any questions about the process, please see Miss Leroy.

Mathematics News What’s Happening in 4G?

In 4G last week we were learning all about ‘Whole Number’. We learnt to represent, order and compare

5-digit numbers. We also did a daily ‘Number Talk’, where students were given the chance to share their

mathematical processes with the class. Miss Cole

The Griffin Goal for Weeks 3 & 4 is I will stay safe on the playground. Students had an opportunity to discuss this Griffin Goal with their class and came up with the following suggestions for how they could achieve the Griffin Goal:

Class: KB This week in Bounce Back KB read the book ‘The Carrot Seed’. This Bounce Back book addresses the concept of putting in effort to achieve a goal. Students discussed times when they felt successful.

Students engaged in small-group discussions, involving the following scenarios: 1. If you like to draw, and someone tells you that you are not good at it, should you stop drawing? Why or why not? 2. If you like to run, but you always lose the race, should you stop running? Why or why not? 3. If your best friend likes to play soccer at lunch, but you like to play handball. What could you do?

We also made a ‘Calm Down’ area in our

classroom, to help us to Bounce Back from tough

times!
