Principal’s Desk Week 3 Term 3 EDUCATION WEEK This week we celebrate Education Week with the school holding its Open Day on Wednesday. An invitation is attached to this newsletter. We would love to see all of our wonderful parents and community members come to share, with the students and staff, all the great achievements and programs that make Glenhaven the fantastic place it is. IAN WALLACE INFORMATION NIGHT There has been an impressive response to our upcoming talk from Ian Wallace on 14 th August. The reviews have been fantastic and I would recommend people make arrangements so at least one member of the family may attend. I would like to thank Mr Reid for his initiative in organising this session. TRIVIA NIGHT Only five weeks left to the event of the year! Don’t forget to get your table organised and booked through the office. The staff have managed to get some wonderful prizes and opportunities. For those that have never come before, it is an extraordinary night that you will never forget. DANCE SUCCESS Yesterday I had the pleasure of watching both our Junior (years 1-2) and Senior (years 3-6) Dance troupes compete and perform at the prestigious McDonald’s Sydney Eisteddfod at the Opera House. Our Junior group performed in the morning and they had never danced publicly before. I have never been so proud watching them. Their smiling faces, outstanding dancing and beautiful costumes were so impressive. They were up against some great competition but were awarded Third Place! This was a wonderful achievement for their first performance on such an impressive stage. Our Senior troupe performed last night at 7.30pm again against a large contingent of very well known and impressive troupes from a variety of state and private schools. Their performance was simply incredible and brought thunderous applause from the audience. Finally, the end of the night culminated in Glenaven being awarded First Place! A truly magnifcant day where Glenhaven was well and truly showcased for its expertise. A huge thank you to Mrs De Belle and Miss Pejar for our Junior troupe and to Mrs Wilson and Mrs Denning for our Senior troupe. A extra huge thanks and congratulations for our dance teacher extraordinaire Miss Laura. NETBALL NEWS A big congratulations to Angelina Ballas who has been selected to represent New South Wales in the State Netball team. She will be travelling to Darwin next month and I am sure we are sending her the best wishes for success. Angelina will be selling the mandatory State Netball raffle tickets on Open Day. Please support Angelina by visiting her and purchasing a ticket. INTERVIEW ROUTINES There may be times, when as a parent, you may wish to discuss concerns with the class teacher. After this, it may be necessary for parents to then contact the Stage Assistant Principal who will be able to organise a meeting to discuss these concerns. These Stage supervisors are aware of routines and happenings within the grade and can address the concerns or issues quickly or organise for a follow up meeting. At all times it is important that these meetings are scheduled so relevant information can be on hand. Have a great week and celebrate the short amount of rain we are presently enjoying. OPEN DAY BOOK FAIR A call out to all parents about the upcoming Book Fair on Open Day! At the Book Fair, you child will be able to purchase books to bring home and keep, and also purchase books to donate them to the school library. Your child will then have a donation sticker with their name on it placed inside the book and will be the first person in the school to borrow the book! There will be a range of books suitable for all years that will be on sale. The Book Fair will run differently to previous years. We have two Book Fairs in the year – our Open Day Book Fair will be hosted by The Children’s Bookshop in Beecroft and allows you to purchase books to KEEP and also gives you the opportunity to donate books to the Library. Our Grandparent’s Day Book Fair was very successful in this format. The reason for the change from previous years is we are encouraging all students to buy a book that they love and want to keep and become a regular reader. Payment on the day can be credit card, EFTPOS, cash and cheque. If you are paying by cheque, your cheque will need to be made out to The Children’s Bookshop At the Book Fair, we will have a range of books that we are hoping to have parents donate to our Reading Room. These books are sets of novels and chapter books for all students across the school to use in their Literacy Groups. We look forward to seeing you at the Book Fair. The Book Fair will begin at 8.30am and will remain open until 11.00am. Library staff will be available to assist you on the day, so please come and purchase or donate a book! Jane Egginton - Teacher Librarian

Kate Zucconi - ABC Reading Eggs Coordinator MUSICA VIVA

Music is all around us and continues to be an integral part of our life and learning. At Glenhaven PS we appreciate how much music matters and are working towards enhancing opportunities to connect music to student learning. During Term 2, all students participated in the Musica Viva In Schools Program where we were able to connect to the people and culture of the Torres Strait through music, dance and children’s games. Through our lessons we were able to gain an insight into growing up on Mua Island and develop an understanding of ways to pass on knowledge, stories and traditions through play, dance and song. The performance by Wyniss in Week 9 was a wonderful addition to our NAIDOC week celebrations. The staff and students were mesmerised by the performers and the interactive elements of the performance. The students particularly enjoyed recreating stories out of strings and were very keen to demonstrate this to the performers. A heartfelt thank you goes to all the teachers who ensured that the students were prepared for the concert and had a deep knowledge and understanding of the music.

My friend – Diversity Poem by Carter Gardner 1st Place

I may look different to you but you are my friend through and through, Friends with a different background yet we love spending time in the playground.

You teach me about your traditions and I tell you about our family expeditions. I am glad we are not all the same and that we don’t ever hurt or blame.

We help and care for each other although we are different you are like a brother. I sometimes think about what life will bring, the future is bright so let’s sing.

We sing about rejoice, young and free. We are proud of who we are, let’s celebrate them, you and me.

I wonder what we will be, when we are older, wiser and free. What makes us different might be the key, the key that is diversity.
