Principal’s Desk Week 5 Term 3 IAN WALLACE PRESENTATION Last week the school held an information session presented by Ian Wallace on Raising Resilient Children. It received an overwhelming attendance of over 80 parents and community members. Ian presented the night with a humorous and genuine approach and happily addressed many issues such as letting children persevere with disappointments and issues, social media and addictive games. Sincere thanks to Mr David Reid who organised for this session. A reminder that a Survey Monkey was sent out last week and we would appreciate any feedback so we can ensure that future sessions are just as beneficial to our community. BOOK WEEK This week the school will be celebrating Book Week on Thursday 23 rd August. Please see all information later in this newsletter in regards to the Book Parade and the days’ happenings. DUE DATES FOR PAYMENTS Just a quick reminder that payments for all excursions need to be paid by the due date. As has been mentioned previously, all payments go through a Department Cost Centre with payment taking approximately 30 days to be received by the relevant companies. Therefore, we need to have numbers and payments decided prior to the date of the actual excursion. At all times the school wishes for every student to be able to take advantage of these opportunities however, it is not possible to just add another child after this date. All due dates can be found on the relevant permission notes and your term account which are sent out at the end of each term via email prior to the new term commencing. CANTEEN MANNERS You will notice in this week’s PBL focus that the school is discussing “Canteen Manners”. Lately there has been an increase in students forgetting those magical words of “please” and “thank you”. We are very blessed to have so many volunteer parents run our canteen and surrender their personal time to ensure that our canteen operates 5 days a week. It is important that our students treat these people, and all people, with the manners and respect that we are accustomed to at Glenhaven Public School. PJ DAY I must say I think last Thursday, PJ Day, was one of the best days of the year so far. I found it so much more comfortable wearing PJs than my usual attire. Many thanks for the wonderful donations of chocolate, savoury foods and gold coin donations. These are presently being made into a series of hampers for our upcoming Trivia Night. A reminder that this “event of the year” is fast approaching and should not be missed. STEM SURVEY Last term the school was heavily involved in a STEM Action plan “How does your garden grow”. This week we will be sending out a survey to our community for feedback that will drive our future direction with this initiative. It would be greatly appreciated if you could take the time to complete this survey. Finally, I will be taking some leave during this week and next week due to my daughter and her family, my beautiful grandchildren, visiting from London. Lots of cuddles, hugs and spoiling is planned! Have a great week. TELL THEM FROM ME SURVEY – STUDENTS

I am delighted that this term, our school, like many other public schools in the state, will participate in a Department of Education initiative: the Tell Them From Me student feedback survey. The survey measures factors that are known to affect academic achievement and other student outcomes. The focus of the NSW-wide survey is on student wellbeing, engagement and effective teaching practices.

You may remember that our students also participated in a Tell Them From Me student survey in Term 1 this year. Asking students to complete the survey twice in one year allows us to identify trends in student responses as well as track engagement and motivation across the school year.

The survey is a great opportunity for our students to provide us with valuable and quick feedback on what they think about school life, how engaged they are with school and the different ways that teachers interact with them. More than 6,300 schools in Australia and around the world have used Tell Them From Me to survey 5.4 million students. Capturing the voices of our students will help improve how we do things at our school.

More information about the survey is available at: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au

I want to assure you that the survey is confidential. The survey is conducted online and will typically take less than 30 minutes to complete. It will be administered during school hours in Week 10 this Term.

A consent form will be sent home with students later this term. TELL THEM FROM ME SURVEY – PARENTS Later this Term, our school will be participating in the Partners in Learning parent survey, another part of the Tell Them From Me suite of surveys (student, teacher and parent surveys) on student engagement. The survey asks parents and carers questions about different factors that are known to impact on student wellbeing and engagement.

Completing this survey will help our school understand parents’ and carers’ perspectives on their child’s experience at school. These include: communication between parents/carers and staff, activities and practices at home and parent/carer views on the school's support of learning and behaviour. This valuable feedback will help our school make practical improvements.

The survey is conducted entirely online on smartphones, ipads, tablets, laptops or computers. The survey will typically take 15 minutes or less to complete and is completely confidential. The parent survey will be open between Weeks 6-10 of this term. Although participating in the survey is entirely voluntary, your responses are very much appreciated.

We will provide further information about how to access the survey in the coming weeks. In the meantime, more information about the survey is available at: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au/

NATIONAL TREE DAY

Planet Ark recently celebrated 22 years of National Tree Day and Schools Tree Day - Australia's largest community tree-planting and nature care event. Our school's Tree Day was proudly supported and funded by Bunning Dural. Tree Day is an opportunity to do something positive for your local environment and community and to reconnect with nature.

National Tree Day started in 1996 and since then more than 4 million people have planted over 24 million trees and plants and it's still growing. National Tree Day and Schools Tree Day combine to make Australia's largest community tree planting and nature care event.

National Tree Day aims to inspire, educate and recruit Australians to actively care for our unique land and create future generations of committed environmental custodians.

EDUCATION WEEK OPEN DAY 2018 THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! Glenhaven students and staff are very appreciative for the wonderful support of our library through the generosity of our dedicated Parents. The library was a busy place on Open Day and many students visited to select books to donate to the library collection and to buy a book for themselves. The Children’s Bookshop at Beecroft hosted our Fair this year and the sales totalled $5343! We had $1964 worth of books donated to our School Library and we have made a commission on the Fair so that our Library can purchase more resources through The Children’s Bookshop. Thank you once again for your generosity! It was lovely to see so many excited young faces buying books to read. Students who have donated books for the Library will be the first students to borrow these brand new books. These books will need processing – cataloguing them in the Library, placing on labels and barcodes and having them covered. This will take a couple of weeks before they are ready, but we will be working quickly for you to have them as soon as possible. Thank you also to the wonderful parent helpers that volunteered their time to help at the Book Fair this year – Kim Old and Rebecca Abbott. Without these ladies, our Book Fair would not be able to run so smoothly and efficiently - these ladies worked throughout the morning to process all the donations and to write on the donation stickers. A massive thank you also to the parents who helped with the covering of books that were donated to our Library and special thanks to Kerry Purse for her support in making our Book Fair such a success. Mrs Jane Egginton | Teacher Librarian PREMIER’S READING CHALLENGE 2018 (PRC) We are progressing well in our school mission to complete the PRC at Glenhaven – 407 students have already logged online and 296 students have finished their reading record! PSSA REPORTS FOOTBALL Open Girls - Round 13

Score!!! Last Friday, the Girls team were the first to open the scoring. We hit the lead!!! It was a great game and very competitive - we all had so much fun. We played against Samuel Gilbert and were very unlucky to go down 2-1 (our closest game of the season). On the bright side, the player of the match was Emma for her amazing strike to put home the first goal. Written by Sienna.

Junior Boys - Round 13

The first goal went in and the game came alive! The junior boys had a great game playing end to end football. Unfortunately, we went down 3-2 in another very close match. Campbell and Valentino scored cracking goals with great lead up play. We passed the ball really well as a team but a few lapses in concentration saw us concede some easy goals. Player of the match was Valentino for his tireless efforts both in possession and in defence.

Senior Boys - Round 13

Today we lost our last game of soccer 5-1. Despite the score line we had lots of fun and enjoyed passing the ball around together. The half-time score was 4-0 so our second half was a draw 1-1 with AJ scoring an amazing goals. It was a good game played in the right spirit with both teams having a laugh and joke. Player of the Match has to be AJ for his infamous goal of the season! Written by Blake.

SEASON IN REVIEW

Junior Boys

The team had been selected and we were put to the hard task of working together and sorting out some new combinations. The team came together well and learnt some valuable lessons this year including working hard off the ball was just as important to working hard with the ball. We talked a lot about creating space and opening up the field with some smart passes and using the full width of the field was something we worked hard on. As a group, we tried really hard all season and were unlucky to go down in a few close matches which cost us dearly in the end. We also some had some really successful games were we all put in for each other and came up with the results. We are all looking forward to an even better season next year with some promising combinations developing this year.

Senior Boys

This season the senior boys have had a lot of fun despite some of our results. We have improved a lot and now worked much better as a team during the second half of the season. We didn't score many goals this season or win any games but we all tried new positions and enjoyed each others company - we will all have some memorable moments from this year! We are proud to have put in a big effort during every game and turned up for each other each and every week. We have learnt some lessons about passing and the defensive line moving up together to close the space the other team can play in. Mr Reid will be dreaming about telling the back line to move up and close the field - he said it at every single half time this season! Hopefully we have some better results next year.

Open Girls

Can't Stop! Must keep going we continually say to ourselves in big deep breaths. This season the girls team did extremely well considering a lot of us have never played football before. Every single game we worked hard for each other and tried our very best. Over the course of the season we have learnt some great techniques and skills. It was really fun and exciting and definitely something new for many of us. Despite some of our results we have really had loads of fun and combined well as a team. If we have learnt one thing this year, it is to go in hard and to never give up chasing for the ball. We are looking forward to building our team next year and more positive results.
