4-Year Old Glenmore Park resident John Plume is defi nitely not your typical kindergartner. John is fl uent in two languages, holds three passports and has appeared on national television and in many photoshoots for Fantastic Furniture.
Australian born John Plume has been raised bilingual his whole life. With his mother only speaking to him in Thai and his father only in English, John has learnt to translate and relay messages quickly and perfectly. John regularly speaks to family in Thailand over the phone and they are shocked at his ability to speak so well. According to his dad Jan, family in Thailand have said that “John speaks Thai more like an adult than a child.”
John attended school in Thailand for several months when he was only three years old. Already then, his teacher was very impressed with his quality of speech. Along with his speech, John is able to recite the entire Thai alphabet which is over 40 letters long. This is very uncommon for someone his age.
John holds three passports, Thai, British and Australian. John’s father was born and raised in England to Latvian parents and was also raised bilingual.

Can you believe we are almost half way through the year? I know it's cliché, but, where did the time go?
As the year races by, we find ourselves in Term 2 of school; Easter has been and gone, with Mothers Day just around the corner. In the blink of an eye it will be the end of financial year and we'll be donning our winter woollies!
We have a jam-packed edition for you this month, with plenty of local stories and information to keep you well informed and ‘up-on’ the latest happenings in and around your community.
Camille reminds us about the RSPCA Million Paws Walk held in May, a wonderful event helping raise funds for animals in need. A great excuse to spend some time outdoors with mans best friend. See page 16 for all the details.
Of course, May is the month of making the most of time with MUM and those dearest and nearest to you with special memories of those gone too soon.
Make yourself a priority once in a while. It's not selfish. It's necessary and you deserve it!
Enjoy your Community News.

Shayley Shaves Her Head
Former Caroline Chisholm Student Shayley Hakenberg has shaved her head for the 2016 World’s Greatest Shave. Shayley has suff ered with serious illness her whole life and decided to shave her head to raise money and support an incredible cause.
Shayley was diagnosed with Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis (LCH) when she was only 16 months old. She underwent surgery and chemotherapy which unfortunately left her with permanent damage to her brain. Recently, Shayley was diagnosed with another rare disease called TTP. TTP is where platelets are destroyed in the blood. Again Shayley was treated in the Cancer Unit at Westmead ICU.
After her recent diagnosis and treatment, Shayley says she felt she should “Grab the opportunity to do what [she] always thought of doing.” Last month, Shayley shaved her head for the World’s Greatest Shave. She had set a target goal of $4800 but has already exceeded her goal by raising over $5000.
Shayley says she had initially hoped to raise anything, no matter how little. Fortunately, she says “Her personal journey has had a lot of support from everyone along the way.”
For anyone that would like to support Shayley, you can do so through the World’s Greatest Shave’s website. Simply click donate, search ‘Shayley’ and follow the instructions. Shayley Hakenberg shaves her head for The World’s Greatest Shave. Image supplied.

We know it is important to get good information in life, even on basic things like which milk to drink or if you should even drink milk at all!
We spend hours deciding which car to buy or which school to send our kids to, but I wonder,
how much time do we spend thinking about Jesus; who he was and what he came to do.
Straight away, some will say, “Doesn’t matter” or “Who cares”, but here’s the thing, Jesus said that what you think about him, will determine where we spend eternity. Now that is a BIG thought!
But is Jesus right? Is he wrong? How do you know? Jesus also says that by putting into practice what he says, that
you will actually be living the best life. Again, is he right? There are so many big questions, big issues that Jesus brings
to the table. Jesus is the man you can’t ignore. A favourite Bible verse of mine is from the book of John;
“These things are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.”
At Glenmore Park Anglican Church, we love to introduce people to the real Jesus. The real Jesus, who lived, died, who rose again and who calls you and me to follow him, so that we may this real life.
Each Sunday at our 4 services (8.30am; 10:15am; 5pm & 7pm) and in our groups throughout the week, we spend time getting to know this real Jesus who has transformed the lives of hundreds of people in Glenmore Park and the surrounding suburbs. We’d love you to join us!
You are also invited to some other special things coming up at Glenmore Park Anglican Church, your local Church...
• “Real Life Parenting” course – 6 weeks beginning Wednesday 11th May at 9.30am (with creche). (See the advertisement on this page)
• Celebrate Mother’s Day, Sunday May 8th at our 4 Sunday Services.

Soul Matters: Finding a Foothold When Everything Moves
It strikes me that our sense of peace and security is somewhat dependent upon fi nding something
that doesn’t move under our feet. I mean something we can stand on when everything else seems to be unsure, changing and shifting around us.
The reality is that relationships change, our age changes, our health can change, our income can change, our reputation can change, and so can the way we feel about ourselves or the things around us. If enough of the important things in our lives move under our feet we can fi nd our souls struggling.
To remain standing, we need to fi nd something sure and stable to put our feet on.
I think the biggest problem for us can be a lack of clarity about what is unsure and will change, over against what is solid, unchanging, certain, and therefore safe to stand on.
When we fool ourselves into believing our circumstances don’t change, we can set our souls up for a lack of peace. Now usually we argue in our minds that circumstances shouldn’t change, or believe that they just can’t change because we deeply don’t want them to change. But this will throw our souls into turmoil because things around us always move and change. Circumstances are like the surging sea. There is little that is certain about how people will treat us, how this or that will turn out, how we will cope when something happens, or even how long we (or someone we love) will live.
The Bible promises that God’s love, his intention and action to protect our wellbeing come what may, is solid: we can stand on it, bet on it, lean on it, depend on it, and plan on it. When everything else is swirling and we lose our footing, we can fi nd our footing again in God. In this sense the Bible often describes God or Jesus as a Rock.
To have your say go to my Soul Matters blog at www.paulmarshall.org.
Peace in the swirl, Paul

When can someone give the long suff ering residents of Glenmore Park an idea when we will see a start to the extensions proposed for Glenmore Park Shops.
The council won’t provide any help, they don’t even reply to correspondence. There were 20,273 residents living in Glenmore Park at the last census in 2011, one can only guess that fi gure has increased quite substantially since then.
We have a large population serviced by one single shop (Woolworths) & residents are forced to travel into Penrith CBD to have any choice in what & where to shop.
The shopping centre extension was approved in 2014, what’s taking so long to get going.Merv, Glenmore Park

PARENTS CORNER
This month we continue the series on Parent Traps that we started last month.
‘Escalation traps’ are one of the most common type of parent traps, and involve ‘child escalation’ and ‘parent escalation’. Child Escalation
When children want something and don’t get it, they can learn that by escalating in their behaviour or emotions (hitting, crying, whining, nagging) they can get what they want. For example, a child wants a lolly in the supermarket. Although you say ‘no’ the child gets louder and more demanding, and you give in to avoid the fuss and judgement from other people in the store.
What is my child learning from this?Parent Escalation
When parents want something from their children they can escalate (nagging, shouting) to get the child to complete the task. For example, you want the child to switch off the computer and come to dinner. You ask several times and each time gets louder. You get to the point where you are screaming at your child, counting, or making threats and demands. This is where the parent says “my child never listens to me”.
What is my child learning from this?Combination of Parent and Child Escalation
Yes, you can have a combination of child and parent escalation. The parent escalates in response to the child’s escalation, and fairly soon tempers are frayed, feelings are hurt, and nothing productive or helpful has been achieved. Remedy?
Give clear, calm instructions. Stay calm, and follow through, so that your child knows that when you say ‘no’ you mean ‘no’ and when you want something done it gets done within a reasonable time frame without a fuss. And as always, continue to build a strong relationship with your child based on love, nurture and trust, because the strength of the relationship determines how much your child will listen and respond to you.Struggling?
The Triple P (Positive Parenting Program) parenting course is available free in the community (http://www.resourcingparents.nsw.gov.au/). Triple P Online is available for the cost of $80.

HEALTH MATTERS
Could Your Diabetes be Causing Your Back Pain?
An estimated 917,000 (5.4%) Australian adults have diabetes of some type today. Self-reported diabetes more than doubled from 1.5% in 1989–90 to 4.2% in 2011-121. Importantly having diabetes greatly increases your risk for many back problems including:
1. Lumbar and cervical disc hernation2,3 (the old slipped disc)2. Lumbar disc infections and infl ammation4 which is
associated with3. Increased degenerative (Modic) changes to your vertebra4. If you require a back operation the likelihood of:
a. Success is much lower in diabetics,b. Further disc herniation is greatly increased5 and,
5. People with degenerative (type 1 Modic) changes show much poorer improvement levels6
So how does this happen? Most diabetics today have Type 2 diabetes, basically a dietary defi ciency disease. Vitamins, minerals and other vital substances help the body build strong discs and vertebrae. With poor nutrition discs and bones (which are continually rebuilt) slowly become weaker. Eventually you lift something and a weakened disc herniates. A herniated disc develops blood vessels (as it repairs). These new vessels bring bacteria to settle in the disc. Now you have an infection which leads to further back issues. This is much more likely in diabetics because excess glucose in the blood (hyperglycaemia) negatively eff ects overall immunity & hyperglycaemia makes infections more likely by:
1. Reducing white blood cells to infection fi ghting capacity so helping microbes to thrive in the body
2. Making skin (one of the key barriers in innate immunity) less competent
3. Negatively aff ecting the body’s ability to respond to antimicrobial therapy7
So now, as a diabetic you’ve set things up such that your chances of getting and keeping a back problem are quite high. Many of our patients with back problems also have diabetes. Now you can see why. The diagram below details changes we see in many of our diabetic patients with back pain. For these people clinical nutrition helps control (type 1) and regress (type 2) diabetes, while muscle elongation therapy treats their back issues. If you have unresolved back pain or diabetes, why not come talk to us at BHW - see our ad for contact details.

The P.C.S.A. Representative team players were selected back in December 2015 from Clubs participating in the local Saturday softball competition. Over the ensuing months the boys came together as a team to train and compete in a series of Softball Gala Day’s across the Sydney metropolitan area. During these
events they demonstrated their dedication to their chosen sport and further developed their skills.
During the two days of the State competition the boys played fair and hard, displaying their sportsmanship, skills and talent, but alas fell short of making the fi nal.
A huge congratulations goes to all of the boys for their eff orts and an even bigger thanks to their dedicated coaches and trainers.

Tahlia Tupaea – Emerging Opal18-year old Basketball sensation Tahlia Tupaea (Glenmore
Park) was invited to the Australian Women’s Basketball team (Opals) Training Camp in Gosford in April.
Tahlia was however not chosen in the original 27-woman squad for Rio and is therefore ineligible for selection.

John has appeared on the Channel 9 Today Show with Deborah Knight. He was part of a short segment which was conducted with a handful of other children. Along with his television appearance, he also takes part in photoshoots and has done three for Fantastic Furniture appearing in advertisements and catalogues.
Despite all the amazing accomplishments that John has achieved in his short four years, he is still just a kid. He loves to play with his younger brother Mark, jumping on the trampoline, playing on the computer and visiting with friends. He also enjoys fun activities such as roller skating at Skatel. He is due to start with StudioQ which runs at the Joan Sutherland Centre.
To add to the long list of amazing things John is able to do, he also enjoys playing the electronic organ. He is into almost anything and everything he can get his hands on.
John is an exceptional character who continues to surprise his family with his intelligence, creative spirit and willingness to do anything. Only starting school this year, one can only imagine all the incredible things that John is yet to achieve.

Stuart Ayres MP, Member for Penrith last month announced that the NSW Government is getting on with the job of improving transport facilities at Penrith Station with site establishment and early works now underway.
“The upgrades will be a boost for the Penrith community, with the improvements designed to provide a better customer experience and increase capacity for future growth in the region,” Stuart Ayres said.
“The community will see more activity around the Station as we start setting up the site compounds and early works on station platforms.
“Once complete, customers using Penrith Station will benefi t from new lifts and stairs to the platforms, an upgraded station concourse, improved bus, taxi, and kiss and ride areas, and upgrades to lighting and CCTV.”
The improvements are being delivered as a part of the NSW Government’s Transport Access Program, an initiative to deliver modern, safe and accessible transport infrastructure.
Western Sydney customers have been major benefi ciaries of the Program with a $150 million investment to upgrade six key Western Sydney stations, including Pendle Hill, Blacktown, Wentworth Falls and Flemington.
More than 50 car spaces will soon be reopened for Penrith customers near the corner of Jane Street and Castlereagh Roads, following work to resurface the existing gravelled area and install new lighting, fencing and drainage.
Planning is also underway to build a 300-space, multi-storey car park on the same block of land where the existing commuter car park on Lord Sheffi eld Circuit is located.
Since the Transport Access Program began in April 2012, more than 450 projects are underway or have been completed.

Garfi eldMark & Julie Kendrigan would like to thank Orchard Hills Vet especially Jonathan for the love and care they gave to our beloved cat of 15 & 1/2 years. Garfi eld was a amazing cat that always had an opinion & always had to have the last word. Even though we have four other cats our house is very quiet without him.

The RSPCA Million Paws Walk is in its 22nd year and is a great way to raise money for animals in need.
The Million Paws Walk is an incredible day out for all animal lovers. But it's more than just a regular walk! Tens of thousands of people and their four-
legged companions all across Australia take part in this fantastic event every year, joining together to fi ght animal cruelty.
The Million Paws Walk will take place on Sunday 15th May 2016, and will be held in 20 diff erent locations across New South Wales, meaning you're sure to fi nd a location near you! The closest location to Penrith are Katoomba and Sydney Olympic Park. Go to the RSPCA website at http://www.millionpawswalk.com.au/New_South_Wales to get further information on the location, contact details, parking, pricing, timing and venue details.
The walk is RSPCA NSW's biggest annual event, and money raised through activities on the day, donations, merchandise sales, and online fundraising, is critical in supporting RSPCA NSW's work. Your generous eff orts assist with the care of more than 35,000 animals who enter the shelters each and every year.
Every year, the RSPCA NSW cares for and protects our state’s neglected, abused, injured and strayed animals. Last year, a staggering 46,558 animals came to the RSPCA NSW for help.
The RSPCA is NOT an agency of the Australian Government and therefore relies on the generosity of the community to continue it’s vital daily work. Along with shelters, volunteer branches and Inspectors, they also fund an education team that visits schools, universities and community groups to educate the importance of treating all living things with kindness. Thank you for making the RSPCA NSW your charity of choice.
All animal lovers are encouraged to dust off their walking shoes and come down on the day to enjoy the festivities, even those without pooches of their own. The day will off er plenty of fun activities, competitions, food, and of course, the walk!
