The recent turmoil in the credit markets has highlighted significant errors and shortfalls in collateral management operations. These errors have translated into material actual losses creating a risk management exposure but also a savings opportunity. Both, the buy side and the sell side, are revisiting their risk infrastructures, many of which were designed to avoid losses, not necessarily improve operations. At the top of the list of improvements is the ability to better assess risk drivers, to calculate the amount of portfolio at risk, and to improve overall collateral management.
Speakers from leading financial organizations will share their knowledge and experience on successful collateral management processes. Join them in Amsterdam! You will meet experienced professionals and discuss views on collateral management in the time of decreased economic activity.

A number of high-profile defaults, volatility in the financial markets and heightened concerns over counterparty credit risk have placed great strain on many banks’ collateral programs and have highlighted the need for a new approach. Even before the collapse of the sub-prime market, the rise in instrument complexity and trading volumes had alerted the market of the need to update the techniques and systems used to manage the collateral process.
While collateralization can be viewed as a trading enabler and a way to protect against counterparty credit risk, it introduces its own set of operational and legal risks. During quiet times these risks may be low; however in times of great upheaval they can become significant. These risks need to be addressed for collateralization to be effective.
In addition to a wider recognition of credit and operational risk, firms are also shifting from the standard, backward-looking reactive approach to a decisively proactive, predictive approach in order to prevent disputes, and foresee and respond quickly to potential risk and exposures. The question arises: do the techniques which worked well several years ago still work today?
This forum follows up on 3 previous successful collateral management conferences. It will provide presentations and case studies from leading European financial institutions, interactive panel discussions and two days of networking opportunities!
Capture the appropriate credit exposures with counterparties
define and accurately apply the terms of collateral agreements
Monitor and track collateral calls and movements
Optimize collateral asset usage
Utilize outsourcing opportunities in collateral management

The use of collateral management as an essential tool to mitigate credit risk has been growing in importance over the last three years. Financial institutions seek ways to benefit from this opportunity for business growth and therefore enhance their profitability. Across all traded products, there has been a movement in the market, driven by new regulations and market opportunities, towards more centralized and integrated collateral management processes. It is increasingly important to understand the collateral process governed by the master agreements as obtaining credit is becoming gradually more difficult in today’s market.
Senior level executives from leading organizations will share their knowledge and experience on principles and techniques of successful collateral management.
