Meet Anna Parish,

Health SUPERHERO!Our Superhero of the the Month for April is Anna Parish. She is 11 years old and from Louisville, Kentucky. Anna has donated hours of her time and raised thousands of dollars to support organ donation. The reason Anna is passionate about organ donation is simple: she received a new liver thanks to a donor.

Anna, you’re just a kid! Why did you need a new liver? When I was only 5 weeks old I caught a virus which made my liver sick. I had a surgery to extend the life of my liver but the doctors knew it would not last forever. The only cure for me was to get a new liver.

What does it feel like when your liver isn’t working?I would have to miss school a lot for doctor’s appointments. I had trouble keeping up in school. I would itch all the time from my liver not working right, and eventually I got short of breath when I would try to keep up with my friends. When I was 8 years old the doctors put me on a list where I would have to wait for a new liver.

That doesn’t sound very fun. So, did you get a new liver right away? No. The only way I could get a new liver is if someone had registered to be an organ donor before they died. There is a shortage of regis-tered donors, so I had to wait 3 years to get a liver transplant.

Wow! So what did you do in those three years? My family and I decided to get busy by helping to raise awareness for organ donation and- help kids like myself. Before the transplant I was on a swim team, played tennis and participated in drama classes. My rst involvement with fundraisers came when I helped my swim team raise $6,500 for Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Pediatric Liver Depart-ment. Our team swam laps to raise money. The following year I decided to help raise money by forming a team and walking for The American Liver Foundation. Team Anna raised $9,800! I became the Liver Champion and walked in Louisville and Cincinnati.

That’s a lot of money! What did your friends think about it?In 5th grade a lot of my friends started to ask questions about my condition. They asked why I would miss school and why I was sick a lot. I met a few people who worked with Kentucky Organ Donor Aliates. KODA worked me to bring a science program to my school that taught my friends how their bodies work and how to stay healthy. It also talked about a subject that most kids do not know about and that is organ donation.

MY TALENT MY HEART MY SUPERPOWER!

ADVOCATINGRAISING MONEY & AWARENESS FOR ORGAN DONATION

Neat! So when did you get your organ? In May of 2012, the call nally came that the perfect organ for me was available. I had my successful trans-plant at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital.

That’s awesome! Now that you’re getting healthy again, what have you been doing?I realize now more than ever that I have to keep spread-ing my story and raise awareness. I am on the road to health and want to do my part to help other people who need transplants.

In July, my swim team and I put on another ”Swim for Hope” event and this time raised over $11,000. The money went to The Satterwhite Fund, which helps transplant patients and their families who cannot aord all of the expenses. In September I was proud to speak and serve as the starter for the ”Donate Life” walk in Louisville.

You just don’t stop, do you?I want to continue to pay it forward by helping other people who are waiting for their second chance. I want to give them hope. I want to show the world that by

becoming a registered organ donor that they could possibly save multiple lives someday.

But you’re just a kid!I am only 11 but with the help of my family and friends we can make a dierence! Even kids have the resources and talents that we can channel for good!!!

What would you tell other kids who want to get involved to help organ donation or make a dier-ence somewhere else?Tell your parents or teachers what ideas you have. They can help you with your eorts by getting you linked with a charity or organization that you believe in.

Anything else?I just want people to know that I am passionate about organ donation because I was lucky enough to get a new organ and have the hope of a promising future. I have been through a lot in eleven years, but I also realize how fortunate I am for so many reasons. Kids go to school to receive an education but sometimes adults can learn from kids too. We can share our ideas and energy to promote good.

Doctors Without Borders provides independent, impartial assistance in more than 60 countries to people whose survival is threatened by violence, neglect, or catastrophe, primar-ily due to armed conflict, epidemics, malnutrition, exclusion from health care, or natural disasters.

The YMCA focuses our work in three key areas, because nurturing the potential of kids, helping people live healthier, and supporting our neighbors are fundamental to strengthening communities.

Since their founding in 1923, Kosair Charities has changed the lives of hundreds of thousands of children by providing the highest quality health care for those who had nowhere else to turn. Through support from generous donors, children receive medi-cal attention they desperately need and deserve.

Kentucky Organ Donor Affiliates (KODA) is dedicated to saving lives through organ and tissue donation and transplantation. KODA was formed to establish a statewide educational and procurement network. Their mission is to provide organ and tissues to those in need and to maintain a profound respect for those who gave.

The Trust For Life’s Judge Charles Satterwhite Recipient Assistance Fund covers the expenses that the family does not have the resources to meet. Since 2001, the fund has been able to assist 418 recipients from 88 different counties around Kentucky with grants totaling nearly $300,000. Recipients have ranged in age from 3 months to 70 years old.

The American Liver Foundation supports research about liver disease, works to increase the number of organ donations, and educates people about liver disease.

More than 115,000 people in the United States are currently on the waiting list for a lifesaving organ transplant.

One deceased donor can save up to 8 lives through organ donation and can save and enhance more than 100 lives through the lifesaving and healing gift of tissue donation.

The first successful liver transplant and the first successful heart transplant were both in 1967!

90% of Americans support organ transplants, but only 30% know how to become donors!

Transplant Facts

The liver is the largest organ in your body. It does more than 500 different things for your body. It transforms foods into energy, it cleans your blood, and helps you absorb fat! It helps your blood clot, so you don’t bleed, and helps you absorb medicines so you feel better faster!
