As A relAtive newcomer torobertson Geo, i am fascinated by the range ofequipment and technical ideas that come out of ourDeganwy base in North Wales. Our tools are deployed across the globe inthe most diverse applications imaginable -from aquifers, underground mines, oil andgas prospects, high rise buildings, roadinfrastructure, rail networks, tunnels, bridges, dams, harbours, power stations, quarries, wind energy projects and even glaciers.

Key to all of Robertson Geo activities arepeople - from our very skilled staff inDeganwy that design, build and ship ourproducts all over the world, to our agents andtheir employees who promote our products, and of course our customers, the end users ofthis equipment. Several of these people havecontributed to the articles in this edition, andthey reflect the huge range of geographicaland cross-sector use of our technology.

A number of exciting products are coming tomarket during 2019, as we strive to pushtechnical boundaries in slimhole loggingtools, which by their nature are challengingdue to space limitations.

Gavin RowlandsGlobal Business Development Manager

SToneHenge iS A prehistoric monument.it consists of a ring of standing stones, with each standing stone around 13 feet(4.0 m) high, 7 feet (2.1 m) wide andweighing around 25 tons. The stones areset within earthworks in the middle of thedensest complex of neolithic and BronzeAge monuments in england, includingseveral hundred burial mounds.Archaeologists believe it was constructedfrom 3000 BC to 2000 BC.Stonehenge remains one of the world'smost important prehistoric sites and amajor tourism site in the UK -attracting many thousands of visitorsfrom across the world to what is aUNESCO site of special importance.

A proposed A303 tunnel wouldremove the majority (around 3km) ofthe existing road and its traffic fromthe site. It would reunite the north andsouth sides of the ancient landscapeand also allow for the reinstatement ofthe line of the Stonehenge Avenue, anancient processional route to thestones.

Robertson Geo have been heavilyinvolved in the initial investigationstage for the tunnel proposals with thesuccessful logging of 18 subsurfaceboreholes ranging from 146mm ODbores up to 355mm OD wells. Theseboreholes ranged from 35m through to70m deep.

One of the objectives of investigationwas to find the location of sections ofphosphoric chalk and this was achievedby using a High Resolution Opticalteleviewer (HI-OPTV) to identifychanges in bed colour, backed by theidentification of differing radiationlevels (See data example). TheRobertson Geo PS Logger was also

WIRELINE LOGGINGaround one of the wonders

of the worldutilised during this project to determinethe small strain moduli of the chalkwhich will aid in the design andconstruction of the tunnel.

To determine possible water ingress oregress within the boreholes a Heat-Pulse Flowmeter probe was used tohelp identify any potential water-tablemovement across the site.

Surface logging equipment included aRobertson Geo 500m winch with 3/16”four-core armored cable connecteddirectly to a laptop via theMicrologger2, Robertson Geos’ surfaceinterface system for handling loggingdata acquisition. Winch and surfaceequipment operated from one of theservice team’s fleet of purposemodified vehicles, in this case a LandRover Discovery, allowing access todifficult to reach areas and affordingquick and efficient movement betweenborehole locations.

RoBeRTSon geo CLienT Construction and drillings Specialists inc.(CdSi) of Manila is a specialist contractor for exploration drilling andformation testing, providing coal and mineral exploration andgeotechnical services throughout the philippines and South east Asia. The use of wireline logging instrumentation offers cost effectivedata acquisition for the exploration and evaluation of quality andquantity of the economic coal resource and indications of theviability of its extraction. The data provides in-situ results of ahigh-resolution scale and true vertical depths.

Compliance is the key to success and vital to the confident use ofthe data. Robertson Geo’s tool calibration and ISO 9001procedures provide absolute reassurance that the data acquiredcomplies with the various mandatory requirements for submissionand consideration for Public Reports, including the JORC, CIM,UNFC, CRIRSCO, Perc, SAMREC, SME and MRC standards. Unlessthese criteria are achieved, logging results will simply not meet thenecessary compliance standards.

Coal and Mineral exploration is often progressed in the mostchallenging of locations and environments. Robertson Geo hassupplied over 2,000 units to the international market and over 40years has logged many thousands of investigative boreholes andwells. Versatility and the portable use of its equipment in-situ have, and continue, to be important to the success of its technologiesand results.

RoBeRTSon geo CLienT Bayer Ltd of Ankara wascommissioned by the Turkish Mineral Research institute todefine the subsurface coal levels and extraction potentialat a number of sites throughout Turkey. After drilled and cased boreholes were completed, thesites were investigated by wireline logging to define thequantity, quality and the difficulty of economicallyextracting the coal resource.

Geophysical probes and surface equipment supplied byRobertson Geo were used to acquire and interpret thedata during the country-wide project at severallocations. Bayer Ltd deployed a range of probes for theexploration including Formation Density, Neutron, FluidTemperature/Conductivity, ELOG and Natural Gamma.

ABOVE: By far the most abundant occurrence of coal in Malaysia is found inSarawak State. Geological surveys have outlined various deposits ofeconomic importance in the Silantek, Mukah-Balingian and Bintulu regions.

CDSI carried out a project of coal exploration and evaluation for the SarawakEnergy Board on location at Mukah-Balingian over 293 boreholes logging atotal of 38,800m. Data gathered was utilised for the coal reserve evaluationand established the accurate thickness of the coal seams and location. Theproject fulfilled its objectives in compliance with JORC code standards.

FRoM RiSHiKeSH RAiLWAy station toKarnaprayag, indian Railways’ proposedroute for the Char dham Railway. This 125km route starts at New Rishikeshrailway station at 380m AMSL and ends atKarnaprayag 825m AMSL. The 125km project, will reduce the Rishikesh to Karnaprayag traveltime from 7 hours to 2 hours. It will have 16bridges and 105km or 85% of the projectinside tunnels. A 15.1km tunnel, reported to bethe country's longest, will be built betweenDevprayag and Lachmoli on the route.

Robertson Geo client Soiltech India PrivateLimited was involved in the first phase of theproject. The geology and locations in theHimalayas made for an exacting boreholedrilling and subsurface geotechnicalinvestigation to gain the understanding of rockstrength and the presence of fractures. TheRobertson Geo High Resolution Acousticteleviewer (HRAT) was extensively used tocorrectly map out the joints anddiscontinuities in the borehole. It was alsoused for carrying out hydro fracture tests afterthe boreholes had been surveyed. The datawas captured on location using the highlyportable Micrologger2 acquisition system witha 600m winch.

THe TAipei WATeR departmentplanned to drill a programme ofdisaster prevention groundwaterwells in Taipei and the ZhongxiaoJunior High School of north-WestTaipei was one of the chosen sitesfor a well. The borehole logging investigationwas undertaken by Robertson Geoclient Excellent Instrument andEngineering Co Ltd of Tuu Cherng,Taipei Country.

“The geology of the Taipei basin iscomposed of gravel, sand andmud. The layer constituted byrough sized particles of gravelcontaining most of the water, withless water content found in thelayers constituted by fine sizedparticles. To locate the aquifers, gravel or coarse sand layers werethe target areas for identification. These layers have high resistivityand low natural gamma values”.

This clearlyshowed up the various depositsequence and identified whichdepths we should install theborehole screen. It was veryimportant to construct the wellaccurately, if the screen waslowered in the wrong depositlayer, it could cause poor flowrates or contamination of thewater supply in the well”.

HigH Speed 2 (HS2) is one of the largest infrastructure projects currentlyunderway in the UK. it is a high-speed railway, scheduled to open inphases between 2026 and 2033 with high-speed trains travelling up to400 km/h (250 mph) on 330 miles (530 km) of track.Robertson Geo have been involved with HS2 since August 2016 makingthis one of the longest running projects for Service Logging to date withdata acquired from over 70 boreholes in varying locations along theproposed route.

Characterising the subsurface properties for formation, rock strengthand the presence of fractures and faults, the investigation hasinterpreted the data acquired from a comprehensive suite ofgeotechnical probes including the Full-Waveform Sonic, PS Logger,Formation Density and the High Resolution Acoustic televiewer (HRAT)and High Resolution Optical televiewer (HI-OPTV).

Due to environmental reasons the occasional visit to rural Aylesburybecame a challenging location for portable logging operation, it hastested the versatility of both Robertson Geo service engineers and fieldequipment.
