Is your agency generalist or specialist? Does your agency concentrate on high level

compensation package? Is your agency over reliant on banking &

finance? Engineering recruitment may be an option

for you. Average salary for engineer in Australia is

USD70,000

Worldwide shortage of engineers across all disciplines

Huge demand for engineers in the emerging markets of China, India, Brazil, Central Asia, Middle East.

Competition for experienced mining engineers in South Africa, Canada, Australia, Central Asia

10

Page 11: Global Mobility -Engineering & recruitment opportunities

55,500 extra engineers needed for 400 major projects predicted in mining industry in next few years.

Current base of 55,100 engineers involved in exploration and production activities.

Significant age and retention issues.

Average age of 51, more than half of those engineers to retire by 2015.

Meanwhile, the rate of new entrants is 2-5%.

11

Skills shortage in the international mining industry now at critical levels.

A third of South Africa’s engineers left the country over the past 40 years.

Canada and Australia each need an additional 70,000 - 80,000 workers over the next decade to meet mining industry's projected needs.

12

Page 13: Global Mobility -Engineering & recruitment opportunities

In Canada 40% of the mining and metals workforce will retire by 2014.

Staff turnover in the mining and metals industry is high.

In Australia turnover 20 - 45%, depending on location.

Increasing staff turnover can lead to falling productivity and safety standards.

13

In the past, developed countries could attract engineers from overseas.

Now Russia, India, Brazil, China are experiencing shortage of skilled staff.

Competition: booming construction industry across Asia is drawing skills away from the mining industry.

Mining industry faces a perception problem and is associated with physical danger and isolated locations.

“Our attitude is that we have to think in terms of being a global business. It comes down to where you have the skills base and the capacity in your global offices to get the work done. Our emphasis is on following the skills, not on low cost.”◦ SKM Chief Executive, Paul Douglas

Fly in/Fly out from outside Australia

Low cost countries (with good technical and English language skills) such as Philippines, India, Malaysia can provide a BPO to the Australian mining industry

Substantial opportunities for ASEAN based engineering companies to supply labour and expertise into the Australian market

16

Page 17: Global Mobility -Engineering & recruitment opportunities

Because of Australian labour shortage substantial portions of new projects outsourced to fabrication yards offshore and shipped to Australia for assembly

Modular approach becoming industry norm

Floating of LNG construction now being considered, despite inherent risks, because of labour shortages (JP Morgan energy analyst)

"There is a world-wide shortage of top people and executives can now pick and choose jobs. While job satisfaction and the quality of the company played a major role in attracting talent, ultimately the remuneration package and how it was structured remained the deciding factor.

However mobility has now created a world without boundaries where top executives can select who they want to work for and where.” (anonymous mining director)
