Focus: Development of models and techniques for real-world and multifaceted problems in data analysis. Techniques: AI-based Data Mining;Bio-Inspired Algorithms; Computational Modelling;Discrete and Agent-Based Simulation;Fuzzy Methodologies;Multi-Sensor Data Fusion;Qualitative Methods including Structured Interviews. Application: Biomedical sciences and themes relevant to the digital economy including security, energy management and adaptive systems.

Focus: Theory and practice of functional programming in languages such as Haskell and Agda incl. type theory and category theory. Techniques & Application: Exploration of functional notions of effects in the design and application of modelling and simulation languages. Reasoning about various forms of effects incl. state, exceptions, interrupts, concurrency, and even quantum effects. Investigation of novel languages based upon dependent types, to bring programming and verification closer together. Exploitation of mathematical concepts such as monads and arrows that arise in category theory to find new ways to structure and reason about programs.

Application: Problems arising in both natural complex systems (e.g. biology, chemistry, physics) and man-made ones (e.g. socio-technical organisations, infrastructure in healthcare, logistics, etc).

o The Centre for Plant Integrative Biology (CPIB) is a systems biology research centre focussing on mathematical and computational modelling of plants.
