General Information

A Thermistor is an electronic component that exhibits a large change in resistance with a change in its bodytemperature. The word “ Thermistor ’’ is actually a contraction of the words “ Thermal Resistor.’’

The Thermistors that we describe are ceramic semiconductors and have either a large positive temperature coefficientof resistance (PTC devices) or large negative temperature coefficient of resistance (NTC devices).

Changes in the body temperature of Thermistors can be brought about (a) Externally by a change in the temperatureof its surrounding (ambient temperature) and corresponding change in the resistance value is made use fortemperature sensing applications (b) Internally by heat developed by the passage of current through the devices(self heating) and the corresponding change in resistance value is made use for current limiting, inrush current control, and heater applications.

NTC THERMISTORSNTC ( Negative Temperature Coefficient ) Thermistors are thermally sensitive resistors which exhibit a decrease inresistance value with increase in its body temperature.

NTC Thermistor Terminology1. Zero - Power resistance value - The Zero-power resistance is the DC resistance value of a Thermistor

measured at a specified temperature with a power dissipation by the Thermistor low enough that will result in notmore than 0.1% change in resistance value.

2. B-Value constant - B-Value is a material constant of a Thermistor in K which reflects the slope of theTemperature / Resistance curve. Higher the B value, higher the thermal sensitivity of the Thermistor. B-Valueis different for each type of Thermistor material and temperature range. Most Thermistor manufacturers reportB-Values between 2500K - 5000K.

3. Thermal Dissipation Constant - Heat flow characteristics in NTC Thermistor elements and componentassemblies are governed by Thermistor shape factors, material properties, thermal coupling conditions andtemperature differential of the element to its surroundings. The thermal dissipation constant of a Thermistor,D.C(mW / 0C) equals the energy or power required to raise the temperature of the Thermistor element by 10C.

4. Thermal Time Constant - The Thermal time constant is the time taken by the Thermistor to change 63.2% ofthe total difference between its initial temperature and that of its surroundings when dissipating no power. The timeconstant is very much dependent on the size and finish of a Thermistor.

PTC THERMISTORSPTC (Positive Temperature Coefficient) Thermistors have resistance-temperature characteristic that exhibit a very smallnegative temperature coefficient until the device reaches a critical temperature that is referred to as “Curie’’ temperatureor Transition temperature. Above the curie temperature, the devices exhibit sharp rise in resistance.

PTC Thermistor Terminology1. Zero - Power resistance value - The Zero-power resistance is the measured resistance value of the PTC

at 250C, with no appreciable self-heat producing current flowing through the Thermistor.2. Transition Temperature (Ttr) - The Transition temperature or switching temperature is the temperature at

which the resistance of the PTC Thermistor begins to rise sharply and it is the temperature at which the resistance ofthe PTC becomes twice the minimum resistance value.

3. Switching or Tripping current at 25 0C - It is the minimum amount of current required by the PTC toguarantee switching at 250C.

4. Non-switching or non-tripping current at 25 0C - It is the maximum amount of current the PTC must beable to pass without switching at 250C.

5. Switching / Tripping Time - It is the time required for switching the devices, while passing the switching currentat 250C.

APPLICATIONS : Temperature controller for automobile air conditioner.

FEATURES :• The Electronic Thermostat controls the temperature of the

evaporator in car air conditioning systems

APPLICATIONS :These are more reliable and accurate replacements formechanical thermostats which are used for preventing de-icing ofthe evaporator in a car A/c. The set temperature can be controlledto an accuracy of ± 0.50 C rendering it as a more accurate andreliable unit.

FEATURES :1. Accuracy : ± 0.50 C2. Operating temperature : - 400 C to + 850 C3. Working voltage : 9V to 16Vdc4. Nominal working voltage : 12Vdc5. Humidity : 95%

The Electronic Thermostat comprises of a thermal sensor (NTCtype thermistor probe) and an electronic control switch. Thethermistor probe senses the evaporator’s out air temperature.Depending on the temperature sensed, the electronic switch turnsON/OFF the air-conditioner compressor through the relay. Thisprevents the evaporator core from freezing.

TYPICAL SPECIFICATION OF ELECTRONICCONTROL SWITCH :Operating Voltage range : 9V - 16VdcNominal Voltage : 12V dcLoad : 200mA @ 12VdcCompressor off : 3.50 C ± 0.50 CCompressor on : 5.00 C ± 0.50 CDifferential : 1.50 C ± 0.30 C

Fixed Electronic Thermostats andVariable Electronic Thermostats

VARIABLE ELECTRONICTHERMOSTAT• The variable Electronic Thermostat is used to protect the

evaporator core from freezing in airconditioners• Thermal sensor - NTC thermistor probe senses the

evaporator temperature• Electronic circuit turns the air conditioner compressor ON /

OFF at any temperature which can be set by the user byvarying the potentiometer. This will determine thetemperature inside the car cabin

• Operating temperature : - 300 C to 850 C• Highly reliable, accurate and wide operating voltages when

compared to Mechanical Thermostats• Fast response
