LETTER OF INTRODUCTION

In the general health and wellness area the government is highly supportive of many sporting and health programs across the country. Specifically in Rotorua we have projects underway to grow our mountain biking offering which is world class and will host over 220,000 visitors to our trails this year and growing 20% per annum.

Finances

We understand there is USD 350,000 required to organise and host the 2016 Summit based on the 2014 Morocco costings. Rotorua is highly experienced at hosting world class conferences and events with lasting legacies. Essentially by staging the Summit in Rotorua at local/NZ costs would actually generate a surplus for GWS of USD 350,000 based on 350 to 400 attendees (delegates and spouses). We fully appreciate there will need to be some level of up front working capital to enable aspects such as familiarisation visits, engaging onshore PCO’s, booking presenters and services to occur. We are happy to discuss with you the level and underwriting of this portion.

Logistics

Rotorua hosts 3.2m visitor nights per annum including 143,000 delegate days over 1,400 business events. As a town we are totally geared up for and focused on hosting visitors whether to visit family, for conferences, international tourists, students or sporting events.

Rotorua has approximately 13,000 beds in total available and a selection of hotels, resorts, luxury lodges and motels has a combined approximately 1600 rooms. Some of these lodges are of such an exclusive and high quality standard that they have hosted royalty over the years.

Rotorua is home to several award-winning and significant cultural experiences including TePuia and the National Māori Arts and Crafts Institute.

Ground transportation is relatively easy with most accommodation within a 5 to 10 minute walk from conference venues or an easy 15 to 20 minute drive. Most venues have bus services and these can also be easily arranged if a particular destination or experience was organized.

Just shy of 100,000 square feet, our largest conference venue, the Energy Event Centre can easily accommodate conferences up to 2000 delegates. With a plenary capable of accommodating a banquet of 2600 delegates, it is a flexible and modern facility. Uniquely located adjoining to the Rotorua Museum, a historic Tudor-style bathhouse built in 1908, it is also located in the active geothermal field of lake Rotorua, nestled between two geothermal natural springs; truly à propos for the Global Wellness Summit.

Strong with a deep and meaningful culture, unique geothermal and volcanic assets, we hope you will consider Rotorua as a uniquely different destination for the Global Wellness Summit in 2016; we believe that Rotorua offers the best destination to unlock the immense potential of Asia Pacific. In perpetuating the legacy of the Pink and White Terraces, Rotorua enters the 21st century with a single objective, to reclaim its title as the spa of the southern Seas.

New Zealand is a stunningly beautiful, clean, peaceful, welcoming and exciting country to visit. For several years now the brand has been ‘100% Pure’ and is moving to ‘Open Hearts, Open Spaces, Open Minds”. This exemplifies the culture, the environment and the values of our proud peoples.

In the heart of New Zealand, you’ll find Rotorua, recognized as the birthplace of Tourism. Tracing its’ indigenous people’s migration to almost 1800 years; Māori people have continuously inhabited Rotorua for more than 650 years; where villages are living museums and Māori culture lives on, deeply rooted in the language and wellness practices.

Once hailed the Spa of the Southern Seas, manuhiri (visitors) have been visiting the region from more than 170 years; originally to bathe in the thermal curative waters of the Pink and White Terraces, hailed as the Eighth Wonder of the World, destroyed by the 1886 eruption of Mount Tarawera. The eruption resulting in our governments’ first endeavor into tourism in building the magnificent Tudor Bathhouse.

New Zealand is also a young country geologically. Rotorua sits in the heart of the Geothermal energy zone with numerous highly visible and world famous lunar-like surface features such as volcanoes, active geysers, mud pools and hot water springs. Blessed with 18 beautiful lakes that are used for a range of recreational activities including fly fishing, boating, and water sports and also several have hot water beaches and hot pools naturally occurring.

That volcanic activity also resulted in a unique soil type which happens to be the best in the world for forming all-year round mountain biking, walking and riding trails; the perfect wellbeing destination.

New Zealand is a multi-cultural society with European, Asian and Indian sub-continent migration over the last 150 years. As such there is a wide range of wellness practitioners and destinations throughout the country. There is a growing awareness and development of indigenous Māori healing and wellness practices (Rongoa) particularly using local herbal remedies such as the world famous manuka honey and oils (anti-bacterial, now used in surgical dressings for super-bugs).

Today Māori culture is strongly supported – including medicine. Some people have turned to these traditional treatments to heal serious illnesses.

The Māori people have known about and utilized the geothermal waters in Rotorua for a range of wellness and healing practices as well as heating, cooking and bathing. There are a range of geothermal and spring waters with differing properties for different treatments. Traditional massage treatments include mirimiri, romiromi and komuru. Several local wellness facilities are incorporating these remedies and rituals into their offerings particularly through local practitioners.

KIA ORA FROM NEW ZEALAND As ancient explorers and early settlers discovered, you’re never far from something incredible in New Zealand.

There’s no better place for adventure, rejuvenation and inspiration. And because New Zealand is compact and easy to get around, you can experience a whole lot in one trip.

The country’s towering mountains, dense forests, and golden beaches make it a haven for outdoor activities, while its multicultural population has created the perfect melting pot of unique cultural experiences.

For a population of only 4.5 million in the isolated South Pacific, New Zealand also offers its own flavour, invention and a proud record of social innovation. From being the first country to offer universal suffrage, to establishing a nuclear-free zone in the 1980s, to being the fifth most highly rated country in the 2015 Social Progress Index; New Zealand has always been willing to lead on issues of social justice and the environment.

Wherever you go in New Zealand you will find friendly people and fascinating culture. New Zealanders have wholeheartedly embraced the Māori concept of manaakitanga, the act of giving and making people feel welcome. Māori are the indigenous people of New Zealand and their customs and traditions can be seen in many facets of New Zealand life.

New Zealand is regularly rated as one of the world’s preferred destinations and we’d love to show you around. So stay a while and experience something dramatic, serene, amazing, enticing or delicious. You won’t have to go too far.

ROTORUA YOUR HOST Rotorua’s Māori heritage and unique geothermal landscape makes it one of the most memorable conference and event locations anywhere in the world.

The city and wider region has been one of New Zealand’s premier tourist spots for generations and continues to be a major drawcard for visitors seeking adventure and rejuvenation. With a wide selection of venues and thousands of rooms in everything from luxury lodges to accessible central city hotels, Rotorua is hard to beat for conference and business event organisers.

Rotorua boasts a panorama unlike any other. Wisps of steam betray geothermal hotspots, and around every corner you will stumble across one of the 18 breath-taking lakes and acre upon acre of majestic forest. Māori claimed this area as their cultural heartland, and when the geothermal resources were harnessed by them and later the European settlers, Rotorua was fast established New Zealand’s first tourism destination.

Fast forward to today and the city has developed into an iconic travel hub and premier event destination, with a diverse range of event venues and accommodation, and a cornucopia of attractions and activities – some unique to Rotorua – making it an event organiser’s ‘pick and mix’ paradise. Rotorua is still the best place to experience authentic Māori hospitality and culture, while several geothermal parks afford great opportunity to witness bubbling mud pools, erupting geysers and vibrantly coloured mineral pools. And let’s not forget that an award-winning spa industry has risen from these geothermal resources.

While the number of things to do is mind-boggling, the majority are within easy reach of the compact central business district, with most venues being no more than a comfortable 20 minutes’ drive.

Visitors entering the Energy Events Centre are quickly captivated by the Wai Ora Spa Grand Hall, with its striking contrast of contemporary architecture and traditional elements of Māori design. The bold colours, huge carved doors, and the illuminated, stylised contemporary ‘pou’ (pole), shares stories of Rotorua’s Māori ancestors.

The centre provides extensive complimentary car parking, and is close to its sister facility, the Rotorua Convention Centre.

TE PUIANestled in the Whakarewarewa Geothermal Valley, Te Puia takes its Māori name from the gushing waters, steaming vents, and natural beauty of the valley. You will be enthralled by the delicate silica terraces, bubbling mud pools, unique geothermal vegetation and the world-renowned Pohutu Geyser, reaching heights of up to 30 metres. Te Puia aims to preserve the heritage of the Māori people and their culture and is home to the New Zealand Māori Arts and Crafts Institute.

AGROVENTURESAgroventures offers truly unique New Zealand adventures for men and women of all ages, from adrenalin junkies and speed demons to those who enjoy a more low key experience. HELL’S GATE MUD SPAFor more than 700 years, Rotorua Māori (Ngati Rangiteaorere tribe) have lived on this land and have treasured this special site as a place of healing and revitalisation. The first Euopeans visited Hells Gate, Tikitere more than 150 years ago.

See the geothermal activity of the Inferno, the Kakahi Falls, the largest hot waterfall in the Southern Hemisphere. Here, warriors would bathe in the sulphurous waters to heal their wounds after battle and remove the “tapu” (sacredness) of war.

Hell’s gate encompasses a Sulphur Spa, a mud spa and traditional Māori massage therapy; for a unique cultural wellbeing experience.

ROTORUA CANOPY TOURSAt Rotorua Canopy Tours we embrace the cooler, wetter months when the forest really begins to pop. Dewy days cast a unique light through the flowering canopy as moss and mushrooms appear; while cheeky juvenile birds fly up to say hello. Come see it for yourself with a New Zealand eco tour through our awesome back yard.

POLYNESIAN SPAPolynesian Spa is New Zealand’s leading international spa, providing visitors with a unique thermal spa experience on the shores of Lake Rotorua.
