Various unpredictable & disruptive events got me thinking...

“If not now, then when?”

Page 19: Globosocial - The Journey. 2009-2011.

So I got stuck in...

Page 20: Globosocial - The Journey. 2009-2011.

Between the ages of 20 and 27 I got involved on the ground

Realised 2 Main Strengths

Systemic Change & Consulting

Page 23: Globosocial - The Journey. 2009-2011.

But...

Needed better skills &

A broader range of industry experience

Page 24: Globosocial - The Journey. 2009-2011.

So I switched to management consulting

Page 26: Globosocial - The Journey. 2009-2011.

In parallel started a social enterprise...

Blog: www.socialeffect.org

Didn’t prove feasible but evolved into advisory work with Non Profits & SEs

Page 30: Globosocial - The Journey. 2009-2011.

Developed and applied a range of skills

Page 31: Globosocial - The Journey. 2009-2011.
Page 32: Globosocial - The Journey. 2009-2011.

... age 32

Page 33: Globosocial - The Journey. 2009-2011.

Reached 5+ years of formal consulting and then faced a decision cross-road

regarding the social sector

Page 34: Globosocial - The Journey. 2009-2011.

Why??

Page 35: Globosocial - The Journey. 2009-2011.

1.

Page 36: Globosocial - The Journey. 2009-2011.

In an environment that incentivises only positive representation, how much second

hand information can you really trust??

Page 37: Globosocial - The Journey. 2009-2011.

2.

Page 38: Globosocial - The Journey. 2009-2011.

$500bn donated to social causes annually

Why aren’t we eradicating problems??

Page 39: Globosocial - The Journey. 2009-2011.

Realised there was so much I still needed to know

Page 40: Globosocial - The Journey. 2009-2011.

What I’m doing now

Page 41: Globosocial - The Journey. 2009-2011.
Page 42: Globosocial - The Journey. 2009-2011.

A global journey looking for answers and challenging assumptions...

Page 43: Globosocial - The Journey. 2009-2011.

...through sharing pro-bono expertisein return for insider access to social realities

Page 44: Globosocial - The Journey. 2009-2011.

Chosen Route

Page 46: Globosocial - The Journey. 2009-2011.

Started in

2009

Page 47: Globosocial - The Journey. 2009-2011.

Covered South America, India & SE Asia 2009 & 2010

Headed to Africa early 2011

Page 48: Globosocial - The Journey. 2009-2011.

How did I do it?

Page 49: Globosocial - The Journey. 2009-2011.

Methodology =

Trusted Recommendation + Word of mouth

Page 50: Globosocial - The Journey. 2009-2011.

Funding = Self-funded

To enable independence and reduce barriers to engagement

Page 51: Globosocial - The Journey. 2009-2011.

Has it Worked?

Page 52: Globosocial - The Journey. 2009-2011.

More than 100 projects in 2 years across 20 countries

Page 53: Globosocial - The Journey. 2009-2011.
Page 54: Globosocial - The Journey. 2009-2011.
Page 55: Globosocial - The Journey. 2009-2011.
Page 56: Globosocial - The Journey. 2009-2011.

Many amazing places

Page 57: Globosocial - The Journey. 2009-2011.
Page 58: Globosocial - The Journey. 2009-2011.

Major fun with beautiful people

Page 59: Globosocial - The Journey. 2009-2011.
Page 60: Globosocial - The Journey. 2009-2011.

And plenty of participative real-life learning

Page 61: Globosocial - The Journey. 2009-2011.

Learnings

Page 62: Globosocial - The Journey. 2009-2011.

My journeys have led me to work with a wide variety of human challenges, through organisations of all sizes…

Page 63: Globosocial - The Journey. 2009-2011.
Page 64: Globosocial - The Journey. 2009-2011.

Here's a little of what I've learnt...

Page 65: Globosocial - The Journey. 2009-2011.

• Social issues are similar everywhere• Challenges faced by social entities are similar too• Meaningful rather than process models make

for successful replication• Only long-term programs truly transform lives• Co-Creation and User Centric Design are critical• Cooperatives are powerful development tools• Safeguarding through policy is often a

necessary step

Page 66: Globosocial - The Journey. 2009-2011.

Finally and most importantly...

Effective tried and tested solutions to most social problems already exist

Page 67: Globosocial - The Journey. 2009-2011.

The current drive to find new and unique models is thus unnecessary and wasteful...

Page 68: Globosocial - The Journey. 2009-2011.

The answer lies simply in getting the basics right and persevering into the long term.

Page 69: Globosocial - The Journey. 2009-2011.

Finally, a few thoughts on the recent boom in Social Enterprise

Page 70: Globosocial - The Journey. 2009-2011.

1.

Page 71: Globosocial - The Journey. 2009-2011.

True social enterprisescreate and prove financially viable

models of change...

Page 72: Globosocial - The Journey. 2009-2011.

...they are NOT simply about making money in socially beneficial ways.

Page 73: Globosocial - The Journey. 2009-2011.

The SE’s model of viable change must therefore be seen as separately scalable

from the organisation itself.

Page 74: Globosocial - The Journey. 2009-2011.

...an example from the Philippines

Page 75: Globosocial - The Journey. 2009-2011.

2.

Page 76: Globosocial - The Journey. 2009-2011.

SE’s need to be realistic about what they are trying to achieve, and the

demographics they can impact

Page 77: Globosocial - The Journey. 2009-2011.

For e.g.

Imagine the “Base of the Pyramid”

Page 78: Globosocial - The Journey. 2009-2011.

Ref: World Resources Institute

Page 79: Globosocial - The Journey. 2009-2011.

This is semantics. It is NOT accurate

Page 80: Globosocial - The Journey. 2009-2011.

Ref: End of Poverty. J Sachs.

Page 81: Globosocial - The Journey. 2009-2011.
Page 82: Globosocial - The Journey. 2009-2011.

S.E. Business models are rarely able to provide for the needs of the extreme poor.

Page 83: Globosocial - The Journey. 2009-2011.
Page 84: Globosocial - The Journey. 2009-2011.

Their viability lies in low to middle income environments

Page 85: Globosocial - The Journey. 2009-2011.

3.

Page 86: Globosocial - The Journey. 2009-2011.

Be very wary of presentation...

...both your own and that of others

Page 87: Globosocial - The Journey. 2009-2011.

“Our low cost products and services in India provide access to educational apps and games for children,

reduce exploitation through access to real time pricing, improve production through access to

weather information, improve medical care through access to health management updates…”

Page 88: Globosocial - The Journey. 2009-2011.
Page 89: Globosocial - The Journey. 2009-2011.
Page 90: Globosocial - The Journey. 2009-2011.

Don’t believe the hype
