Nicene CreedI believe in one God,the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth,of all things visible and invisible.I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God,born of the Father before all ages.God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God,begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father;through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvationhe came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man.For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate,he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third dayin accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heavenand is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in gloryto judge the living and the deadand his kingdom will have no end.I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son,who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church.I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sinsand I look forward to the resurrection of the deadand the life of the world to come. Amen.

Parish Life Weekly Schedule Perhaps you have heard of the Marketing Rule of 7? It’s a maxim developed, I am told, by the movie industry in the 1930s, that a prospect
needs to “hear” an advertiser’s message at least seven times before they’ll take action to buy that product or service. Hmm … I don’t think there really is anything magic to “seven” versus “six” or “thirteen” repetitions, but it surely is how advertisers work on us … drumming a slogan or a need deep into our psyche by saying it over and over until we surrender to it. Usually my own spin on that is “Fr. Mark’s Rule of 3 (or at most 4).” I will feature a program, coming attraction, or need in this “Blah, Blah, Blah” space, and then move it to an abbreviated form somewhere else in the bulletin for a couple times, and then, if I am desperate, mention it in preaching or an announcement at Mass. A couple bulletin columns ago I wrote of my fatigue at the continuing news of disasters around the world (refugees, earthquake, hurricanes, fires, and need I say, virus)? It’s all a bit overwhelming. The best way I know of fighting back is to do something, even something very small, to address one of them … to shake my fist at the forces of chaos. Well, here is my second mention of it ... Haiti is often in the crosshairs of calamity. Our Catholic community has been working in Haiti for a very long time through Catholic Relief Services. They know the land, the people, the needs. If you have been part of our Lenten Operation Rice Bowl effort, you have actually been a contributor to CRS. Maybe you could step up and assist them with a special gift now for Haiti? If you are computer-savvy, check out their website at www.crs.org or, if it is simpler, send a gift through the mail to: CRS; 228 W. Lexington St.; Baltimore, MD 21201-3443. (Be sure to mark “Haiti Relief” on the check’s memo line.) And then there are the Afghan refugees, not so far away at Fort McCoy. I hear from someone close to the situation that right now Catholic Charities is overwhelmed in sorting, cataloguing and distributing our initial goodwill. But the challenge of resettlement is going to be a news story that keeps needling us for months and months. So, if you had intended to make a gift, perhaps right now you should put that thought on hold. Wait a few weeks, and then check again to see what needs have arisen, and then respond. They keep updating the kind of items they welcome at their website: cclse.org/afghanistan-refugee-assistance. Again, I am quite sure that they would welcome monetary gifts for the general cause, too, through their USPS address at: 3710 East Ave. S.; La Crosse, WI 54601. There. I won’t bother you again about it, I promise, no matter what the Rule of 7 says. Now for something completely different. There is a line from a church cartoon I remember: “If a clergyman is a good preacher, he deserves a vacation … and if he’s not a good a preacher, then it’s his people who need him to go on a vacation.” Whichever way it is, I will be taking some time off. I mean, what’s an associate pastor for if you never abandon him for a while? Very early Monday morning I’m driving out of Wausau, intending to get through Chicago before it wakes up, on my way east and south to visit my brother and his family in Kentucky and former students in Philadelphia and D.C. I’m coming back in ten days, so don’t get any ideas. Msgr. Mark Pierce

Readings for the 27th Sunday in Ordinary TimeOctober 3
Genesis 2:18-24; Hebrews 2:9-11; Mark 10:2-16In today’s Gospel, Jesus is teaching lessons that challenge both the law and his culture. When the Pharisees ask, “Is it lawful for a husband to divorce his wife?”, they are test-ing Jesus. They already know what the law says, and Jesus makes their motive obvious by asking them to an-swer their own question. They cite Moses as their inspira-tion for allowing husbands to divorce their wives, and Je-sus trumps their reading of the Torah by quoting an even earlier part of the scriptures (Genesis) to argue that in marriage God intends a man and woman to become one flesh. No man should simply dismiss his wife. Then, he goes on to declare that a woman, too, needs to respect the marriage bond. The Jewish law never imagined the possibility of a woman being able to dismiss her husband, so in saying this Jesus is as much as saying, “The woman is a person of responsibility and dignity, too.”Where in these readings can you see the sources of the Church’s understanding of marriage? Who gets “dismissed” in our society?
Current COVID procedures at Sunday Massesat the Eastside ParishesLast updated September 22, 2021
Here’s a rundown of our current procedures at worship:· With the (near) completion of
the railings along the ramp on the McClellan Street entrance at Resurrection Church, all the doors to both churches are now open for the first time in eighteen months!
· For the unvaccinated, the continued wearing of face coverings and social distancing remain strongly recom-mended; with the Delta variant gaining steam, even those who have been vaccinated are encouraged to mask at Mass and at other parish events.
· Most of each church will be available for seating with two exceptions: first, the pews at the very front and the very back of each section will continue to have an empty “buffer” row (behind or ahead of it) for those who would welcome more space between them and others. And for the time being the 5:30 pm Mass at Resurrection will continue to require 6’ distancing and the wearing of masks by all.
· Taking the offering “passively” at the entrances of the church will continue for now.
· Sanitizing of “high-touch” areas (pew tops, door han-dles, etc.) will continue per CDC recommendations.
Stay tuned. Things change.
Please remember all of our homebound and hospitalized parishioners from Resurrection and St. Michael Parishes in your prayers this week.

Are You Homebound Due to Health Concerns? You Can Have Holy Communion Brought to You...September 3 was the first Friday of the month, and in a custom that goes back centuries, it is a regular occasion for Holy Communion to be taken to those who are home-bound due to age or illness. Being at home because you want to avoid exposing yourself to COVID is another good reason to welcome the sacrament. If you would like to have Communion brought to your home, call the parish office—715-842-4283—to put in your request.
Friday Morning Men’s Group Has Launched … There is Still Time to Join! Before COVID, our 6:30-7:45 am, twice-a-month group for discussion, prayer, and a light breakfast was doing well. But after an 18-month hiatus, the group gathered last Friday for the first of its twice-a-month meetings in Francis Hall at Resurrection. The launch pad for our dis-cussion is Sohrab Ahmari’s book, The Unbroken Thread: Discovering the Wisdom of Tradition in an Age of Chaos. Our next meeting is Friday, October 15. There is still time to join.
Catholicism 101 Has Also Begun … And, Yes, You Can Still Take PartOn Tuesday nights at 7:00 pm, the general adult study of faith, Catholicism 101, has begun again. We’ll tackle topics great and small with plenty of time for questions. These sessions would be especially helpful for those who somehow missed Confirmation, who were raised in other Church traditions and want to understand the Catholic way, or who suspect good things might come from blow-ing the cobwebs off what they learned as kids. We will make this fun.
To sign up for either of these groups, contact Fr. Mark at 715-842-4283 x 5000 or
The Church of the Resurrection is looking for a volunteer(s) to tidy up and replenish the Angel Bags (Mass activity bags for children) in church after each weekend’s Masses. This may be done immediately after the

EUCHARISTIC ACCLAMATION Holy, Holy, Holy Lord God of hosts. Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he, blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Hosanna in the highest. Hosanna in the highest. Hosanna in the highest.
MYSTERY OF FAITH
When we eat this Bread and drink this Cup, we proclaim your Death, O Lord, until you come again.
THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Deliver us, Lord, we pray, from every evil... and the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever.
INVITATION TO COMMUNION
Behold the Lamb of God, behold him who takes away the sins of the world. Blessed are those called to the supper of the Lamb. Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof, but only say the word and my soul shall be healed.
